About the program:

We named our Program: CASA LATINX. CASA stands for: Centro de Apoyo Social y Académico ( Social and Academic Support Center ). We want to create a safe space inside the College where we can offer integrated services to Latino students to help them achieve academic success. We also want to create partnerships with High Schools in order to help younger students.

The LLI Graduating Class of 2019 Is dedicated to Ken Klima

LETI and its partners would like to express our gratitude to Ken Klima, for memorializing the LLI journey for the last seven years by producing a yearly video and his assistance in many other LETI programs.

We will always cherish the memories

LLI Mentor: Rosario Reyes

College Participants: José Gonzalez, Kenneth Orozco

About the program:

The Spark Tutoring group had four members who on March 1st, 2019 contacted Mariner High School for tutoring. On March 12, one member dropped the program and the group was reduced to three. On March 26th the Mariner‘s coordinator, Miss Wallis, cancelled the project due to her busy schedule.

On March 27, the group was referred to North Middle School. They agreed for the LLI students to start tutoring, but regrettably, José could not tutor at the Everett school, because he was from a different district, and only 17yrs old. On Mar 28 one more member quit the program and North Middle School cancelled the partnership with LLI because they needed at least 3 tutors.

In a search of an opportunity to tutor, José and Kenneth had to go their own way. José Gonzalez approached Wendy Messarina from the Marysville administrative office, who referred him to Cedarcrest Middle School in Marysville. Kenneth Orozco, with the help of Rene Acevedo (prior LLI student) and Family Support Specialist, agreed to have Kenneth come to Hawthorne Elementary School in North Everett.

José provided tutoring and mentoring to over 80 students; in different classes such as math, PE, and ISS (in school suspension) to help with homework and to try to help resolve issues that took the student to suspension.

Kenneth provided support for a community event for parents, in which students were part of a talent show. His work was to help with the stage design & set up, supervising students while waiting for their turn to present in order to not disrupt ongoing performers. Other assignments were to delivered food bags to classrooms for financially troubled students and families.

About the program:

Group #1: The program included classroom visits that were conducted 4-days per week in April and early May. Mentors interacted with high school students sharing their stories and resources of college access and responded to questions and concerns. Also there was a SVC campus tour which allowed high school students to experience the variety of educational programs, co-curricular activities and campus housing.

Group #2: Gain awareness of the needs and issues facing the youth in Mount Baker Middle school by meeting with school staff. Planned two student engagement days held during the lunch period. Prepared activities that would promote social-emotional wellness.

Visited Mount Baker Middle school and met with school staff to gain awareness of the needs and issues Latino students face. Had a one-on-one conversation to encourage student participation in activities focused on positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishments. Handed out SVC brochures and community youth resource information and writing journals, healthy snacks and stress management toys. Reported finding to school staff.
