A Look at Special Tanks

Use the regulations references to fill in the blanks on the following pages.

AEROBIC TANK

Section 73.32

• The aerobic tank is used as a primary tank in an onlot system. It circulates through the effluent to help break down the solids.

• An advantage to the aerobic tank is that it may your square feet of absorption

area by a third in some cases.

• Usually the cost of aerobic tanks is greater than constructing the full-size absorption area, so these tanks are not common. They could be used when there is not enough space for an ab-sorption area.

• Minimum treatment capacity is gallons per day for a single-family dwelling.

• Use manufacturer’s guidelines to size the tank.

RETAINING TANKS – HOLDING TANK, PRIVY, CHEMICAL TOILET, AND RECYCLING TOILET

Section 73.61

• Retaining tanks are designed to hold effluent and solids and are used without an absorption area. One example of a retaining tank is a hold-ing tank. Holding tanks must be , and the effluent and solids are treated at another site.

• Retaining tanks are individual sewage systems and require a permit.

HOLDING TANKS

Section 73.62

• Holding tanks are expensive to maintain. They are usually only used for a temporary purpose.

• The required volume of a holding tank must equal gallons or the volume equal to the quantity of waste generated in three days, whichever is greater.

If the daily flow was 400 gallons for a structure, what size holding tank would be needed?

• The tank must be equipped with a warning de-vice to indicate when the tank is filled to within 75 percent of its capacity.

• Check the municipality’s ordinances on holding tanks to make sure there are no restrictions.

PRIVY

Section 73.63

• This system is used when there is no . under .

• The privy must be located to minimize any dan-ger of contaminating the . A -foot isolation distance from water sup-plies and any structure or building must be maintained.

• The privy should be down grade from a water supply.

CHEMICAL TOILETS

Section 73.64

• Chemical toilets are from the permitting process if the facilities are providing for temporary or temporary

or activities or temporary seasonal facilities other than those intended for human inhabitation at the discre-tion of the local agency. An example of seasonal use would be a hunting camp.

• If multiple toilets are proposed for temporary use and the local agency requires a permit, all toilets may be included under one permit.

• Chemical toilets can be considered a if not properly maintained. The local agency can enforce maintenance.

NOTES

RECYCLING TOILET, INCINERATING TOILET, OR COMPOSTING TOILET

Section 73.65

• These toilets are water-conservation devices.

• The solid matter is decomposed or incinerated through incinerating toilets and composting toi-lets.

• The wash water or excess liquid from a com-posting or incinerating unit must still be treated through a permitted onlot sewage system.

• Be sure to read Section 73.65 in the regulations carefully when permitting these types of sys-tems. They are not common systems.

Liquid Capacity

Solve for the liquid capacity in gallons.

Round Tank

What is the liquid capacity of the round tank?
