Student Pharmacist Leadership Retreat

On May 2-3 thirty-three College of Pharmacy student leaders took part in the 5th Annual Student Leadership

Retreat. Dr. Stephanie Phelps introduced student pharmacists to Tom Rath’s Strengths Finder 2.0. Phelps

discussed the book, highlighting the idea that it is important for people to determine their strengths and then

utilize those talents. Student pharmacists learned about theirs and others’ strengths and discovered how

individuals can work together on projects utilizing their talents. The focus is on utilizing strengths, rather than

focusing on areas of weakness.

On the last day of the retreat, student pharmacists came together in groups to learn about leadership roles by

playing games. Students met with Dean Chisholm-Burns for an hour long lunch. Presentations were given by Dr.

Franks about “Managing Imbalance,” Dr. Phelps about “Dysfunctions of a Team” and Dr. Suda about “Conflict and

Its Resolution.” After discussing case examples of accountability and conflict resolution, students attended a

banquet to learn more about business dinner etiquette.

International Rotations 2011-2012

Thirty- two UT COP student pharmacists had the opportunity to

take part in an international rotation this year, traveling to

countries across the globe. Student pharmacists learned about

pharmacy practice, culture and people of Liverpool, Manchester,

London, England; Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen and Mahasarkham,

Thailand; Australia, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Spain,

Sweden, Thailand and Turkey. The international rotation program has been in place for over 20 years.

International Rotations 2011-2012 – continued

“The most unique experience we had while in Thailand was

at the Saraphi Community Holistic Hospital. This is a rehab

hospital for patients who are recovering from some type of

traumatic event or disease (e.g. stroke, neuropathy, limb

paralysis, etc.). The patients and doctors at this hospital

believe in the power of non-chemical, natural medicine.”

Shanise Jamison (left) and Leila Moore (right).

“The International Rotation program is an excellent opportunity

for students to expand their perspective, and experience

firsthand how people are much the same no matter your plane

lands. In Ireland we were exposed to a slower, more relaxed pace

of life, but the same great passion for patient care. We are so

thankful to the University of Tennessee for this life changing

experience.” Kelly Monteen

“We had the opportunity to travel to

amazing places. It was a once in a lifetime

chance for some of us.” Kelly Monteen.

practice in Thailand. The hospitals

resources are not abundant, but

pharmacists manage to perform

above standard duties." Arielle Ross

duty of the community pharmacist.

"The International Pharmacy Rotation was one of

the greatest experiences of my life. I was able to

learn details of Hungarian pharmacy practice as

well as experience the European culture. Our hosts

while in Hungary were outstanding and made us

feel very comfortable. This was a once in a lifetime

opportunity afforded to me by our university and I

would advise anyone who has this opportunity to

take full advantage of it.” Jarod Parrish

“Traveling New Zealand via campervan was an

unforgettable experience. Words and pictures do

not adequately describe the beauty of the country.

We visited pharmacies all over New Zealand, both

the North and the South Island. It was great to

experience firsthand the services pharmacists

provide in another country. The "Kiwis" welcomed us

with open arms. It is safe to say it was my favorite

rotation.” Tyler Madere (left) and Jake Smith (right).

Government Rotations 2011-2012

As part of the diverse pharmacy pratice experiences offered by UT COP, 45 students had the opportunity to

participate in one of several different government rotations. The program began in 2005 and has since expanded

to include more sites. Student pharmacists travel across the United States to provide patient care as part of the

Indian Health Service (IHS) program in Arizona and Wyoming , the United States Air Force in Alaska and the

United States Army in Kentucky. While on rotation, students learn about government-based pharmacy practice

and the culture of the patients they serve.

“My rotation in Wyoming with IHS was an incredible

experience! We administered immunizations, provided

patient counseling and participated during patient rounds.”

Laura Baldridge (right) and Ada Cheng (left) standing in

front of the Grand Tetons in Wyoming.

“The IHS rotation in Wyoming was definitely an eye-opener to the

many career possibilities in health care for pharmacists. This

opportunity to learn more about public health played an important

role in my career path decision.” Jennifer Blocker (right) and Kristen

Dehaven (left) and at the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

“Alaska was an amazing experience, very beautiful

and life changing! Brittany Long (right) and Elizabeth

Olewinski (left) posing on top of the glacier they

climbed in Alaska.

“My experience in Wyoming was awesome. You get to work with an

exceptional group of people at each IHS clinic. The rotation was a

perfect mixture of community and ambulatory care.” Sarah Humber

Government Rotations 2011-2012 – continued

“We really enjoyed the IHS rotation!

The reservation in Wyoming at Fort

Washakie is right up against the

Rocky Mountains. The Shoshone and

Arapaho tribes have lived there

together over 100 years. We were

really thankful to be given the

opportunity to serve such a unique

community of people.” Photo by Tim

Berg and Erik Berg.

“This rotation offered a unique opportunity to learn more about the

Tohono O’odham culture. Through meeting a number of wonderful

individuals, we gained a new perspective and appreciation for their

way of life and struggles. It was truly a memorable experience.”

Leslie Smith (left) and Rachel Bauer (right) at the Grand Canyon

National Park in Arizona.

“This rotation was a once in a lifetime experience. We worked

during the week at the Elmendorf Air Force Base outpatient

pharmacy. On the weekends, we went kayaking, deep sea fishing

and walked on glaciers.” Becky Miller Morris (left) and Ian Morris
