Hello Auction Fans. I’m Allison.

as a cookeville native, i’ve always been aware of WcTe and the educational opportunities it gives our area. i grew up on Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers, and i remember watching the great Julia child from a very young age. The Great TV Auction was on in my family’s living room every summer. i entered the Downton Abbey craze late in the game (season three), but i quickly caught up and have become infatuated with the stylish series! following my graduation from TTu in 2009, i went abroad as an english teacher. afterward, i returned to my beloved cookeville. Through the years, i have developed a passion for local events and organizations. i was drawn to work at WcTe because of its deep connection to the community. WcTe plays an important part in so much of the good “stuff” that goes on here. The Great TV Auction is WcTe’s largest fundraiser. it is also really the culmination of some of local television’s greatest intentions: community support and involvement, promotion of area businesses, and the endorsement of quality programming. as the new auction coordinator, i have quickly learned that extensive planning goes into this event long before the cameras start rolling at the end of may. it’s no simple task to coordinate the Great TV Auction, but i am excited to make new connections and ultimately help WcTe make auction 2013 the most successful ever!

This year WcTe will be adding an on-line bidding opportunity with select merchandise. Where did you grow up? Where did you go to school? i grew up in bay st. louis, ms, a small town on the mississippi Gulf coast about 50 miles east of new orleans and went to st. Joseph’s academy (an all girls’ school) in my hometown and mississippi state college for Women (the “W” now ms state university of Women) in columbus, ms.

What brought you to the Upper Cumberland?We (husband Ken and i) moved here in 2003 to accept a job transfer with sunTrust banks inc. to open a state-of-the-art call center.

What do you like best about living here?i like the overall quality of life. That includes many things but especially the way people

come together to make a difference in this community, caring about others, volunteering at WcTe, habitat, bso, Genesis house, chamber of commerce, and other non-profit organizations. Then there’s the natural beauty around us. all of this makes me proud to live here.

How did you become involved with WCTE?Ken and i became members right after moving here because of our love of public television. We’ve supported public television since we were married in 1974. i became involved (with WcTe) when bob luna and angelo volpe tag-teamed me to join the board. but saying yes to Pbs and WcTe was easy. The national programming won us over long ago, and to come here to discover that we had

our own Pbs station was like receiving an extra bonus in our paychecks. no one else does what WcTe does in the region.

What did you learn as a Board member about the station that surprised you? how hard the management and staff works for the station. each and every one of them is so passionate about what they do. We are fortunate to have such talented, dedicated, hard-working people who care about the upper cumberland and the education of our citizens.

From your unique position as the VP of Economic Development for the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce AND the Chair of the Upper Cumberland Broadcast Council, do you see an economic advantage to having our own PBS TV Station?i do. The local programming shines a spotlight on the upper cumberland throughout the state and nationally with programs that are aired in other markets. shows like Live Green Tennessee, Jammin’ at Hippie Jack’s, the Smithville Jamboree, Bluegrass Underground, the Great TV Auction and more – they all have a positive impact on tourism and the local economy. in the purest sense, our Pbs Tv station is about education and outreach to people of all age groups. education is the cornerstone of a strong economy. becky magura recognizes the importance of educational partnerships and offering programs that support that mission. additionally, the work we do at the chamber of commerce in Workforce development and education has been featured on WcTe. The station is committed to informing the viewing audience about these types of educational initiatives.

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the station today?Gaining support of the local community at the level needed so we can continue to provide the national and local programming. WcTe provides commercial-free, high quality programming and we do not have anywhere near the level of funding of commercial stations. We need everyone’s financial support to ensure the long-term sustainability of this local treasure (and national treasure). membership at any level from the viewing audience will go a long way to support the station.

Explore WCTE... Explore the World was the theme of this year’s annual dinner, where investors in our

region’s only television station were given the opportunity to peek inside the fascinating world of PBS and WCTE. Television Hosts and WCTE Staff were on hand to showcase the station’s contributions in Tourism, Education, Community Engagement and Economic Development through the exploration of Discover the Upper Cumberland, Community Cinema, American Graduate: The Tennessee Story, Live Green Tennessee and Stations of Imagination. Highlights included the presentation of the first annual WCTE Makers Award to Tennessee’s First Lady, Crissy Haslam, for her work in literacy and parental engagement. The award is reflective of the contributions women have made throughout history, as seen in the recent PBS series, Makers: Women

Who Make America. Retiring Upper Cumberland Broadcast Council members Joe Albrecht, Dr. Scott Little, Dr. Kathleen Airhart, John Cain and Mickie Akenson were recognized and saluted for their contributions to public media by UCBC Chair, Lillian Hartgrove. Our guest speaker, Pat Harrison, President and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, wooed the audience with her knowledge of our region, her sense of humor, her sincere message of the mission of public media and the relevance of small, rural stations like WCTE to that mission. A dream came true for me that evening. When I assumed the role of WCTE’s CEO, I set a goal to have every national Public Broadcasting leader visit our region to share with others how public television is enriching lives, and to help show the integral part our very own WCTE plays in that endeavor on a national level. CONSTITUTION USA with Peter Sagal takes viewers on a fast-paced, surprising journey across the nation to examine the 4,418 words — and 27 amendments — that made America. The series coincides with the 225th anniversary of the ratification of the Constitution.

and blue harley-davidson to find out what the constitution means in the 21st century, how it unites us as a nation and how it has nearly torn us apart. sagal talks with ordinary americans who are struggling with issues of affirmative action, same-sex marriage, voting rights, the role of government and equal protection. at a time when polls indicate that only 38 percent of americans can name all three branches of u.s. government (2011 survey by The annenberg Public Policy center), CONSTITUTION USA sets out to illuminate, with style and humor, this remarkably misunderstood document.

may 7 - episode 1: A More Perfect Union Peter explores the constitution’s most striking and innovative feature - its resilient brand of federalism. The framers created a strong national government while at the same time preserving much of the power and independence of the states. This delicate balance of power, seemingly hard-wired for disagreement and conflict, has served america well for more than two centuries. but it has also led to tensions throughout american history and still sparks controversy today over medical marijuana, gun control, and obamacare.

may 14 - episode 2: It’s A Free Countryask americans what the constitution’s most important feature is, and most will say it’s the guarantees of liberty enshrined in the bill of rights. in this episode, Peter explores the history of the bill of rights, and also takes on several stories ripped from the headlines, involving freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and right to privacy.

may 21 - episode 3: We the PeopleThe high ideals of the declaration of independence that “all men are created equal,”

endowed with “inalienable rights,” didn’t make it into the constitution in 1787. it took three-quarters of a century, and a bloody civil war, before the fourteenth amendment of 1868 made equality a constitutional right, and gave the federal government the power to enforce it. The far-reaching changes created by that amendment established new notions of citizenship, equal protection, due process, and personal liberty and today those notions are being used to fight for same sex marriage, voting rights, affirmative action, and immigration reform.

may 28 - episode 4: Built to Last?in this last episode, Peter travels to iceland where a few years after the country’s economic collapse, leaders decided to create a new constitution, turning to the u.s. constitution for inspiration. This prompts Peter to consider why our own founding document has been able to last for more than 225 years. he looks at the systems that have kept the constitution healthy--amendments, judicial interpretation, checks and balances —and also at the political forces that threaten to undermine the framers’ vision.

“if you really stop and think about it, the constitution is all around us all the time,” says sagal. “and though many of us don’t really understand the document, that has never stopped us from arguing about what it means.” Viewers can follow CONSTITUTION USA online at www.pbs.org/constitutionUSA, on Facebook and on Tumbler.
