It’s impossible to have a programme of tours commemorating‘Capability’ Brown without including Stowe, for it was here thathe learnt his trade before moving on to transform the Englishcountryside and many aristocratic estates. Strong personalconnections to his life and patronage by Lord Cobham cementedhis place in Stowe’s history, which was also his first and only placeof employment. He sculpted the large Grecian Valley with views outto his parkland, with monumentally large temples sitting atop thehigh points whilst naturalising the shapes of the lakes and createda trick of the eye by using hidden and sunken Ha-ha walls to keepthe livestock out of the main garden whilst creating views thatappeared as one ongoing scene. There’s so much to see at Stowebut still time to stop off, en route, at the pretty, canalside village ofStoke Bruerne!
