In response to this, the general public needs to learn how to understand and support the disabled better. This activity will attempt to provide a brief glimpse of the world through the eyes of people with disabilities. You will learn how the problems of day-to-day living are handled and develop a positive and caring attitude toward people with disabilities. What has the organization done in the area of research, alerting the public to the need for research, doing fund-raising for research, etc.?

2. WITH YOUR TROOP, WATCH A DVD OR LISTEN TO A RECORDED SERIES ON THE SUBJECT OF PHYSICAL DISABILITIES.

After the troop has viewed the DVD or listened to the program, the troop leader should lead a discussion on the presentation.

3. INTERVIEW A TEACHER IN YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT’S SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT.

Find out how they became interested in working in this area. What are their joys and frustrations? What special type of training did they receive? What is the school doing to be more inclusive or to mainstream students with disabilities. Give a written or oral report on your interview.

4. LEARN ABOUT GUIDE DOGS OR OTHER SERVICE DOGS.

5. INTERVIEW A PARENT OF A CHILD OR TEEN WITH A DISABILITY.

6. WATCH A TELEVISION SHOW THAT PORTRAYS A PERSON WITH A DISABILITY.

Answer the following:

What television show did you watch?

What is the disability portrayed?

In what ways has the character been able to adapt or overcome their disability?

How do the other characters on the show relate to this person?

How would you feel if you or someone you loved had a similar disability?

7. LEARN ABOUT A FAMOUS PERSON WHO HAD OR HAS DISABILITIES.

Make a report or presentation to your troop.

Examples of famous people with disabilities:

• President Franklin D. Roosevelt had polio and infantile paralysis.

• Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone even though he was deaf.

• Helen Keller was blind, deaf, and had no expressive language skills until she was nine years old. As an adult, she traveled, wrote and spoke extensively in her role as spokeswoman for the American Federation for the Blind.

• Christopher Reeves, an actor and director, was paralyzed from the neck down after a horse riding accident.

• Joni Eareckson Tada, a motivational Christian Speaker and artist, was paralyzed in a diving accident.

• John Hockenberry, a television newsman, is a paraplegic.

What are the symptoms of the disability? How many people in the USA/world have this condition? What research is being done nationally about this disabling condition?

Select two and answer (written or oral) the following questions:

1. LEARN A FEW SONGS OR SHORT SENTENCES IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE.

Demonstrate your skill to other Girl Guards and teach them what you have learned.

2. VISIT AND/OR VOLUNTEER IN ACTIVITIES DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: E.G., CLASSES, SCHOOLS, CAMPS, CHURCHES.

3. FIND OUT IF YOUR SCHOOL HAS A BEST BUDDIES CHAPTER.

Become a peer buddy to a person with an intellectual and developmental disability. Log on to http://bestbuddies.org for more information.

4. INCLUDE PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN YOUR TYPICAL ACTIVITIES.

Invite someone to church, Girl Guards, or a club meeting.
