All across the state of Arizona, students prepare year-round for what is the “ACT” of high school exams—the AIMS test. AIMS, or the Arizona Instrument to Meas-ure Standards, is a test administered to assess a student’s skills against state standards. Standards are what educa-tors refer to when teaching a subject. In other words, a 10th grade teacher will not teach 8th grade material because there is a certain standard, or criteria, that students must meet. Why so much emphasis on the AIMS though? Well, it’s not just students that the AIMS looks at, believe it or not. A student body’s performance can say a lot about teachers—are they teaching what they need to be teaching? Is the school providing enough help or resources? Basically, it’s like a snapshot of the school, and it can affect something called AYP.

What is AYP? Think of your school as a mini-corporation. Everyone who works in the school must perform because they will be “evaluated.” The end result is a school report card called Annual Yearly Performance. Depending on the results of the AIMS, the school will be given a grade, A-F. Aside from a school meeting AYP, the preparation students take into the leading months before the AIMS pro-vides valuable skills that will transfer into the years beyond high school. When preparing for tests, experts recommend you study everyday in a structured setting for at least one hour. Furthermore, you should read at least 30 minutes a day. Reading academi-cally challenging material is a sure fire way to boost brain power and vocabu-lary. Reading magazines and gossip columns do not count towards “reading.”

Another suggestion experts advise to is start your own vocabulary journal. Whenever you come across a word you do not know, write it down in your vocabulary journal, define it, and try and use it in everyday language. One more pointer that has proven effective is 30 minutes of exercise a day. This increases brain power, en-ergy, and reduces anxiety. So, although the AIMS is a stressful exam, prepare yourself in the months leading up to the exam. Don’t procras-tinate. Seniors, your diploma counts on this exam. The AIMS is being replaced next year, however, the basic princi-ples remain the same. So begin early, don’t be afraid of a test—it’s a piece of paper. Envelope yourself in school and everything your teachers have to offer. Go to the li-brary. Read a book. Take a study buddy. Make flashcards. Do what it takes to help yourself and your school achieve the best!

Almost every language uses idioms. Idioms are expressions that are not meant to be taken literally. For example, “it’s raining cats and dogs” does not mean that cats and dogs are falling from the clouds. It means that it is raining quite heavily. But have you ever won-dered where these sayings actually come from? Why do we say “I am feeling under the weather” when we are sick if it has nothing to do with the tempera-ture outside? A casual conversation between two people here at the Nizhoni Acceler-ated Academy prompted our curios-ity to find out more. First of all, idioms are culturally relevant. The common Spanish expression “I’m eating the coco-nut”, meaning, to be deep in thought, would not make sense to

Let’s start with a few common idio-matic expressions and delve into a brief history of each one. We often say “Break a leg!” for good luck. Although the origin of the phrase is

obscure, we do know it is derived from the theater culture in which well wishers would often times say the opposite of what was intended, in order to avoid “jinxing” the per-former.

When someone says “He was dressed to a tea” it means that he or she is dressed very elegantly. The history of this idiom dates to Victo-rian times when prestigious people would gather to drink tea and dis-cuss various “cultured” topics like politics, art, and music. Have you ever heard anyone say “Well, now you know their true col-ors”? It means a person’s real per-

Surprise at the appearance of the silent helicopter turned to shock, when the students saw that the bilagaana had completely disap-peared. Mr. Henderson, however, was non-plussed. “I hate falling into random vortexes,” he said, then amended “Vortices? Vortixes? Anyway, wher-ever he comes out, I bet his knees will be chizhi.” He walked over to the dozen men who had spilled out of the helicopter, who were formed now in two perfect rows. The way they held their weapons showed how familiar they were with them, but their boots were in perfect condition: jet black and polished so well Hen-derson could see Shiquawhna throw the hacky at Anthoney through the reflection. The agents immediately gathered around, looking uncomfortable, with their hands resting near their taz-ers. For a long time, nobody moved or said anything. Then Shawnrie’s phone buzzed, and the spell was broken. The bus pulled in, parking behind the helicopter, and students emerged, walking toward the en-trance with their heads down, their ipods plugged in, and their phones in their hands. Until they got to the entrance and found the door locked. “Make way for the Count,” one of the soldiers commanded. Abruptly, the men parted ranks, dividing to create an avenue down the middle from the helicopter. A man stepped out. A tall, slender, aristocratic, man, with black hair slicked back over an ashen pale face. He had bright red lips and wore a black and red cloak over an 18th century tuxedo. He walked right up to the students at the entrance of the school, then turned to look at Mr. Henderson, the security, and the students, and smiled.

upon tricking the other ship into thinking they were allies, they would raise their true “color” or flag, in this case a pirate flag. Lastly, to “hold one’s feet to the fire” is to hold someone accountable. This idiom, al-though rather grim, has it’s roots in the Crusader times, when Crusaders would hold someone’s feet to a fire in order to extract a confession. What idiomatic expressions do you use? You have seen countless ads or products that claim to melt fat and boost health levels. Well, scientists have discovered by far the best way to ensure that you don’t become unhealthy or too

The truth is if you want anything in life you should be prepared to work for it. Not everybody has great genetics to get a super-model physique or a body

Sedentary people have more blood clots, thereby reducing blood flow, which leads to high blood pres-sure, coronary disease, anxiety, and depression. It may also in-crease the risk for some cancers. Everybody can benefit with some walking. Jogging is even better. Point being, don’t just sit around. Humans have walked the earth for thousands of years and that is what they were intended to do. Gemini: (May 21 - Jun 20): Not the best days for romance and love. You are in a mindset that is more on a quiet level. Private matters and specific prob-lems are deep in your thoughts now. Take your time to try figuring them out. Look to the past and look deep within you for the an-swers you so desperately desire to find. Be careful in wasting time on issues that no longer hold precedence however. You don’t want to spin your wheels on a turned-over cart.

Taurus: (Apr 20 - May 20): Grab it and run with it, initiate discussions, look at yourself and what you do for others around you, get back in touch with peo-ple. Now is not the time to stay at bay. Work on your relationship goals and be adamant about what you really want. Be careful though, don’t go over the top with it. You don’t want to seem ob-sessed. The best and most beau-tiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.

Cancer: (Jun 21 - Jul 22):

You are doing excellent in profes-sional spheres as well as in the social limelight. It’s just hard to say whether or not you’ll enjoy the extra spicy dynamic in your relationship adventures. It’s either incredibly arousing or insanely annoying. Regardless, it may not be easy to keep your expectations within the realm of reality. Listen to others around you with as much enthusi-asm and passion and you’ll only intensify what is already predomi-nant for you.

Pisces: (Feb 19 - Mar 20): Your social ability is beaming now. Take it to the fullest limits. You’ll surprise even yourself in how wonder-fully brilliant and confident you can be. Sexuality and fantasy is more dra-matic, dreamier and even crazy this week. First love is only a little foolish-ness and a lot of curiosity. The mo-ment you have in your heart this ex-traordinary thing called love and feel the depth, the delight, the ecstasy of it, you will discover that for you the world is transformed.

Aries: (Mar 21 - Apr 19): While your mind is more on your practi-cal side this week and not so much in the love and romance department, your money situation will weigh heavily in your thoughts, how you can make a better income, what new ideas may come about if you passionately pursue them, how you will best go about reach-ing your goals you desire. While pursuing those monetary ideas, it is ok to go after those desires that are more on the romantic side of things as long as they aren’t too outlandish or eccentric.

Aquarius: (Jan 20 - Feb 18): Enjoy a highly sensitive and emo-tional mind this week. You’ll feel a heightened sense of absorption in the things you do and think. A lover, a good friend and even home and family, they will all be your focus more so than normal. If it is not necessary then try to prolong key decisions and put it off to another day when your mind is more practi-cal.

NAA NEWS

Leo: (July 23-Aug 22): Take this opportunity to develop your career. Improve your profession and this will, in turn, enhance your love life. Don’t concentrate too much on the romantic corners of your life right now. You’re likely to be sought out for ad-vice whether it is an important matter or merely an opinion. You’re likely to steer away from idle conversation and that may appear to others as being too blunt in what you say and even do. Try to gear away from negativity. Even though you’ll feel that it is necessary, it may be the only downfall for you.

Virgo: (Aug 23-Spe 22) : You tend to become bored with the routine everyday tasks and ideals you are accustomed to. You feel ready to stretch out for something bigger, higher and on a much more intellectual level. Your desires are not being quenched and you are willing to go above and beyond to find out how to do so. Perhaps you’ll need to reach out to that certain some-one from far, far away to come back into your life.

Libra: (Sept 23-Oct 22): You tend to be so much more in tune with others needs and desires this week. You pick up on signals that are normally very subtle and interpret them to be just what it should be interpreted as. Use this quality to your advantage. Plan some financial invest-ments, gear yourself toward some specific goals, look toward a love affair you’ve been pondering. The sensitivity that was previously felt will seem to be very approachable for you now.

Scorpio: (Oct 23-Nov 21) : You are meticulous about your decision making this week look-ing at the good, bad and ugly sides before making that final decision whether it involves your career, your home life or dating. You feel the need to leave noth-ing out, including how it will affect others around you. This along with your need to take opposing view points into consideration will definitely affect the conclusions you desire.

Sagittarius: (Nov 22-Dec 21): While tidying up things in your life, it is also a good time to make that appointment for a health check up, buy those extra vitamins and try finding ways to improve the little things in your life. It will all make a big impact on the overall picture for you, making things more attractive for you and about you for the ones around you. Then, perhaps that romance in the works will fall better into place for you when it comes time to pursue it further.

Capricorn: (Dec 22-Jan 19): Be the center of attention. He/she will finally notice you if they haven’t already. It is your turn to be the sexual predator with your creativity and your sense of humor. The ro-mantic in you is predominant. Feel the chemistry between you and your lover. Let it fester and then grab a hold of it. Be creative, play games, get crazy and fall in love once again. Surround yourself with like minded people and you will reap the bene-fits.

A: the surface area of the earth is 196.9 million miles or 510 million km square. If the earth was flat and in a square like Minecraft it would be 14 million miles or 22.5 million km in both di-rections. The Minecraft world is just about 1000 meters for PC which means the world would be 510,000 times larger than the map in Minecraft for PC.
