Albert Ball VC APRIL 2016 Issue 01

Albert Ball VC (1896 - 1917), signed small piece (8cm x 3cm) cut from the bottom of a letter. A World War I ace pilot with 44 Victories including shooting down the Red Baron, who called him the best English pilot. Supplied with a group of 56 Squadron from 1917, which includes him, two pictures in a bi-plane, a copy of the 2006 Stamp PHQ postcard on which he featured and the front page of a 1917 French magazine with him on the front.

Cecil Lewis MC (1898 - 1997). A World War I Ace pilot and later writer whose book the film Aces High was based on. Later went on to be an Oscar winner and founder of the BBC. Small signed piece, slight foxing, supplied with small photograph.

William Rhodes Moorhouse VC

William Rhodes Moorhouse VC (1887 - 1915), the first airman to be awarded the medal. Signed piece stuck on card below a photograph of him, some foxing but we have never had his signature before.

RYW015C £50Spencer Grey, World War I pilot with the Navy, signed (19cm x 14cm), poor condition of the signature and the photograph has a small hole in it. A newspaper clipping says he was the pilot who gave Sir Winston and Lady Churchill their first ever flights.

horseback attached. Flew with the Royal Navy during World

War I and was an RAF commander

during World War II. Later established

V Force and became the first Chief of the

Defence Staff.

Paul Von Hindenburg

Paul Von Hindenburg (1847 - 1934), was the German Chief of Defence Staff during World War I, afterwards he became the second President of Germany. We offer here a signed official Memo from 9th August 1896 to the 37th Infantry Brigade reporting that the papers of a staff officer had not arrived. At this point he was commander of the 91st Oldenburg Infantry Regiment. Supplied with a black and white picture of him.

Goring was an Ace pilot during World War I and founded the Gestapo in 1933. During World War II he was Hitler’s Number 2 and led the Luftwaffe.

RYG045E £75General Franz Ritter Von Epp (1868 - 1947), signed black and white photograph, some folds but a clear signature. Was Knighted during World War I, then entered politics and joined the Nazi Party becoming Governor of Bavaria.

A Luftwaffe Military Aviator he flew 2530 missions, destroying 519 Tanks, 70 Landing Craft and 1 Battlecruiser to name just a few. The only person to be awarded the Golden Oak leaves, Cross Swords with diamonds to the Knights Cross.

Francis Gabreski

Francis Gabreski (1919 - 2002), signed 31st July 1944 Mast head from the Chicago Daily Tribune. Not sure why this particular edition was chosen, he was due to return to America just before then, but on one final mission was shot down and on this day he would have been a Prisoner of War. He was an Ace in both World War II and Korea.

Commanding Officer Raymond Collishaw

1918 Combats in the Air Army Form. The report talks about attacks and the shooting down of two Aircraft near Dieppe by a pilot of 208 Squadron. This has been signed by the Commanding Officer Raymond Collishaw (1893 - 1976), the highest scoring World War I Ace of the RNAS and the second highest scoring Canadian.

1918 Combats in the Air Army Form, reporting on a plane shot down by a pilot of 48 Squadron, East of Albert. This has been signed by the Commanding Officer Sir Keith Park (1892 - 1975), who is best known for being in command during the Battle of Britain in World War II.

Major Christopher Draper

1918 Combats in the Air Army Form, reporting on an enemy plane shot down while on a Special Reconnaissance mission. This has been signed by the Commanding Officer of 208 Squadron Major Christopher Draper (1892 - 1979). Known as The Mad Major, he is best known for flying under Bridges, but was an Ace pilot. In 1953 to protest about the government’s treatment of veterans he flew down the Thames flying under 15 of the 18 Bridges.

Wing Commander F Yeo-Thomas (1902 - 1964), signed title page from the Book The White Rabbit. This book is based on his work during World War II with the SOE, supplied with a picture taken just before he was parachuted into France in 1943.
