Learn the basics of making jewelry using the lost wax casting process. Students will learn to carve and shape hard wax to create unique jewelry objects. Students’ carefully modeled designs will then be executed at a workshop that specializes in casted jewelry.

Use 21st-century technology to create designs informed by the past. This class will take inspiration from Art Deco and Art Nouveau jewelry designs to produce laser cut objects. Students are encouraged to attend the gallery tour to gain insight to the design process and fashion trends throughout French history, before receiving a crash course on how to use design software and a laser cutter in the DoSpace lab at 72nd and Dodge St. Each student will leave with a pre-designed laser cut object.

Weeks of September 19-December 12, continuing January 23-April 10, 2017This 24-week visual arts program introduces students to Joslyn’s collections and exhibitions with sequential art instruction in six media – drawing, painting, pottery, printmaking, sculpture, and fiber arts. Students explore each medium, while building art skills and concepts at age-appropriate levels. Joslyn Art School’s museum setting provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to encounter original works of art, to experiment in related art media, and learn from a professional staff committed to providing individual challenges and guidance. The painterly possibilities are endless in this camp where we will express ourselves with brushstrokes, learn to mix colors, and experiment with unlikely techniques like dripping and pouring paint in new and playful ways.

In this camp we’ll create art we can wear! A special exhibition of glittering gemstones and fanciful fashion arts will inspire us to create art deco t-shirt designs, pendants with pattern, and other ways to make ourselves into works of art.

The classic Little Golden Book, The Color Kittens, will lead the way to get your young artist excited about color! Kitties Brush and Hush will teach us to mix colors, create imaginary worlds, and put together patterns as we make paintings and prints.

In this camp we will investigate the many ways artists whose work is in the galleries use different brushstrokes to express themselves. We’ll explore painting styles and experiment with color mixing and various painting tools in the studio to create our own finished artworks.

Printmaking is a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves kind of art-making that allows you to produce artistic images again and again. We will look to works in the galleries for patterns, lines, and art styles that will inspire designs we’ll create to print on clothing, posters, and more.

Great art is made from a few basic elements and principles. Join us to crack the code to identify the different parts of art! We’ll visit the galleries to learn the tricks of the trade that artists use to make their art awesome, and create paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures of your own in the studio.

Illustrations for the heroic tale The Iliad and the Odyssey will start us on a journey throughout the Museum to find narratives from the mythical past. In the studio we’ll recreate some of these ancient characters and create some myths of our own in sculptures, comic illustrations, and more.

Sculptors create three-dimensional artworks using all sorts of materials and techniques. Campers will view examples of sculptures in the galleries made from clay, wood, glass, wire, and metal to understand how artists create carefully balanced standing structures. In the studio we will combine, build, and carve to make sculptures of our own.

Go behind-the-scenes in this camp that will introduce you to some of our favorite artworks and some of the people who work to make Joslyn special. We’ll visit the galleries to see the greatest hits of the collection and make paintings, sculptures, and prints in the studio. Special guests will stop by to tell us about their jobs in the Museum and we’ll take a peek into areas off limits to visitors.

Turn yourself into a walking work of art in this camp that will draw inspiration from a special exhibition of jewelry from the heights of French fashion. Examples of Art Deco sketches and golden insects worn as pins will get our imaginations flowing to create pendants, bracelets, and t-shirt designs fit for the runway.

It’s been said that great artists steal ideas. More accurately, they fill their “idea banks” with thoughts and observations of the world around them. In this camp we’ll create sketchbooks to hold our ideas, practice some idea exercises, and visit the galleries to look at different art styles and “steal” some ideas from the masters to use when making our own paintings, drawings, and prints.

Roam the galleries to find paintings that purr and sculptures that bite. We’ll look to see how artists use texture, pattern, and shape to make lifelike animal artworks. After our adventures through the Museum we will make sculptures, paintings, and prints of animals.

Student Art Display The Riley Education Gallery, located near the Museum’s classrooms, features artwork by children and adults in Joslyn’s classes. Four times each year a selection of new work is displayed. Stop by to see what our students are doing!
Art Class Scholarships Thanks to a special fund established by Mrs. Louise Wickstrum, the family of David S. and Bella Block, and the Joslyn Art Museum Association, financial assistance may be available for class enrollment. If a child’s or adult’s participation is dependent upon financial aid, please call (402) 661-3846. All requests will be held in confidence.
Photography Joslyn will occasionally photograph students in classes for use in promotional materials, including the Museum’s website. If you do not want you or your child to be photographed, please notify Joslyn’s Criss Center for Education in writing.

Learn hand-building and wheel-thrown ceramic techniques. This two-week camp will allow you to take your time as you learn each step of making wheel-thrown pots and hand-built objects with guidance and encouragement from your instructor.

Learn to create your very own screen-printed t-shirt and poster designs, create one-of-a-kind monoprints, and produce piles of images using the printing press.

Sticker design, zine publication, and skate decks are ways to take art out of the gallery and into the real world. This camp will apply art-making techniques and principles to outlets that reach people beyond the traditional art audience.

Strengthen your drawing skills! Through model studies and observational exercises this camp will teach you to accurately render proportion, perspective, mass, and value, using media including pencil, charcoal, and pen and ink.
