To celebrate National Volunteer Week 2016 and to thank our hundreds of volunteers for their continued dedication,
participating organisations would like to offer you, our volunteers, a week of free tours and events. Check out the
offers below and enjoy. All volunteers from the following organisations are invited to participate in this year’s offers

Description: The Australian National Maritime Museum is pleased to offer 30 free passes to Volunteers. Each pass
will allow the recipient to be issued with one Big Ticket which gives access to not only the main museum building but
to all of the vessels of the museum that are open to the public.
One pass per volunteer, limited to 30 people. Passes remain valid for use for 6 months

Sydney; Rose Seidler House; Rouse Hill House & Farm; Susannah Place Museum; Vaucluse House. Pass allows general

Description: Cockatoo Island is Sydney Harbour’s largest island and has a colourful history as both a convict gaol
and thriving shipyard. This dynamic highlights tour provides an overview of the Island’s history, revealing stories and
anecdotes about convict life and its fascinating character.
After the tour, feel free to stay on Cockatoo Island to enjoy the free art event – Biennale of Sydney.
To get to Cockatoo Island catch the ferry from Circular Quay, wharf 4 or 5, or inner harbour wharves and arrive in
time for a 10:30am start. Meet at the Cockatoo Island Visitor Centre. Ferry timetable at

Description: The Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust is responsible for managing the Sydney Cricket
Ground and Allianz Stadium. The Trust would like to acknowledge the contribution of volunteers by offering
volunteers two places on the SCG Experience Tour. The SCG Experience Tour is a 90-minute, behind-the-scenes
historical journey through the Sydney Cricket Ground, Allianz Stadium and the SCG Museum. Witness sports history
come to life!

Growing Friends' nurseries. Plants are propagated by the Growing Friends’ volunteers, from the living collections at
the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan and the Blue Mountains Botanic
Garden Mount Tomah.

Centennial Parklands
Event: Centennial Parklands – Growing Group Plant Sale

Description: Discount of 20% or more at the Growing Group Nursery Centennial Parklands. Find a great range of
native and exotic plants propagated by the Growing Group volunteers. There will be over 20 species of plants on sale
on the day, mostly from species found in the Ornamental Centennial Park gardens.

Description: This event will take place on both days so choose which day suits you best. Our unknown corner in
Rozelle is where much of the restoration of our heritage fleet is carried out - by our volunteers. You will have a
guided tour with a knowledgeable volunteer leader and delve into nooks and crannies that only shipyards have! And
you will board some of our operational vessels for an inspection. The tour will be preceded by a snag lunch. We ask
that you contribute to this with a gold coin. Please don’t wear white! And you must have closed-in footwear. Parking
is difficult. We recommend you come by Light Rail. Alight at Rozelle Bay.

Description: Featuring ensembles, accessories and archival material from the Museum’s collection and Dinnigan’s
personal archive, this exhibition presents her signature lace and embellished designs in a series of striking themed
sets. Join a Powerhouse Museum volunteer as they share stories and highlight pieces from this exhibition.

Description: For Aboriginal cultures, visual arts are central to identity, place and belonging. Within the Museum’s
program the MCA strongly supports and promotes the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) artists
through exhibitions, education and events.
The Museum’s collections of works by ATSI artists are a valued resource and core function of the Museum’s
activities. The MCA holds a great many important works by ATSI artists, including significant works from Arnhem
Land and this in-depth exclusive tour will feature works around the Museum (including artworks in the 20th Biennale:

National Parks and Wildlife Service Event: Japanese mini submarine tour: Fort Denison
Date: Thursday, 12 May 2016
Time: Meet 10:00am, Tour: 10:30am – 1:30pm
Meeting point: Meet at Cadman’s Cottage forecourt at 10:00am, Harbourside, 110 George St, The Rocks, near the
overseas passenger terminal

Description: In 1942, 3 midget submarines entered Sydney Harbour to attack naval vessels docked there. What
happened next? Find out on this great harbour tour into Sydney's history in Sydney Harbour National Park. An NPWS
guide will take you back to this fateful night during World War II, when the conflict came right into Sydney Harbour.
You'll take a trip on a historic ferry. We'll trace the movement of the submarines. You'll learn about the civilians and
naval personnel involved in this extraordinary story. You are welcome to bring along your own morning tea to enjoy
on Fort Denison. We'll also visit Garden Island. You'll see the conning tower of one of the midget submarines there.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

Time: 10am (approx. 60 mins one way, 120 mins return)
Venue & Access: Kalkari Discovery Centre, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Ku-ring-gai Chase Road, Mount Colah. If
driving from Sydney, from the Pacific Highway turn right into Bobbin Head Road and drive into the
park, approximately 7km.

Description: Join one of our volunteer guides for a bushwalk through the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park,
starting at the Kalkari discovery centre you will take the Birrawanna track. You can stop for a waterfront picnic or
grab a tasty lunch at Bobbin Inn Café before the return trip. Skirting the emu enclosure, the medium difficulty track
passes through woodlands of scribbly gum and red bloodwood to join a historic track of open forests before reaching
Bobbin Head. On the way back up, stop for a breather and check out the lovely views over Cockle Creek and Cowan
Water.
As this is an active outdoor walk you will need to be steady on your feet, be prepared to walk uphill on the return
and bring weather appropriate clothing. We also recommend you bring a water bottle, sunscreen, hat and
appropriate footwear. If you plan on walking one way, please be sure to arrange a car pool to get back to your
vehicle at Kalkari.
