Like many Kootenay natives who have left the area for school or work, Jessica Cormack and Ran-some Hall relish any opportunity they can find to spend time in their old stomping ground.

So when the couple got engaged and started planning their wedding, there was no question they’d tie the knot near their hometown of Castlegar.

“It was an obvious choice because most of our family and friends — probably 80 per cent of the people who came to our wedding — live in the Kootenays,” said Cormack. “It’s also such a beautiful place. I wouldn’t want to get married anywhere else.”

She and Hall went to the same high school but graduated different years. Though Cormack had known Hall since her teens, they didn’t really spend much time together until years later.

“There were little twists of fate that brought us back together, when we were older and ready to be in a relationship,” Cormack said.

One of the things that the couple eventually bonded over was their love of the outdoors. When they were dating, they went on many hiking and camping trips in the Kootenays and Victoria, where they lived together while Cormack completed her nursing degree.

In 2013, during a visit with family in Castlegar, she and Hall went for a day hike up Mount Gimli. At the summit, he surprised her with an engagement ring.

By this time they were living in 100 Mile House, but with the help of family and friends back home, they were able to plan their wedding remotely.

“Everyone really stepped up to help us with different parts of the wedding. It was really incredible what a group effort it was,” Cormack said, noting that their wedding guests helped with everything from making decorations to preparing their food and wedding cake and running the sound booth.

Their big day started with an outdoor ceremony at a park in Silverton, on the shore of Slocan Lake with the Valhalla mountains forming a distant backdrop. Cormack’s father built their altar out of alder boughs to fit with the natural setting.

They had an acoustic trio, led by cellist Jeff Faragher, playing live as they walked down the aisle to

begin what would become a very emotional event. They each read original vows they had prepared themselves, and by the time the rings were exchanged, they were both in tears.

“It was really personal,” Cormack said. “[We] talked about all the things that we believe are import-ant about marriage: friendship, being considerate to your partner, respect, enjoying life, laughing, and working very hard to maintain your love and asking for help and support when you need it.”

The ring that Hall gave Cormack, a modest, but elegant band with an outset diamond, was made from two of his family’s heirlooms — the band itself was passed down from his grandmother, while the diamond had been a gift his late father had bought his mother during a trip to Afghanistan.

“The diamond was significant because it was the last gift his father gave to his mother before he died,” Cormack explained.

Even the bride’s bouquet carried with it a deep family history. Set upon the bouquet’s binding was a small, framed photograph of Cormack’s grandmother, who had passed away shortly before the wed-ding. As she had wanted so badly to attend, Cormack and Hall made it a point to include a small piece of her in their wedding, and to keep her memory close.

Following the ceremony, there was a dinner and reception at a nearby hall. The room was decorat-ed in a woodsy theme, with table centrepieces made from birch logs and candles burning in metal lanterns. The table runners were sewn from burlap and lace.

“I wanted it to look rustic, but still elegant,” Cormack said. “It had been my dream to get married in the forest, but since that wasn’t practical we brought a little bit of the forest to us.”

After dark, the room was lit by strings of overhead lights that gave the feeling of dancing under the stars. The live rock band from Nelson, Andrew Parkhouse and the Magpies, performed late into the night.

“People of every age were dancing together. It was so much fun,” Cormack said. “The whole day was amazing. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

In the Weddingverse, the only constant is change. For such a traditional venture, the trends can be mind numbing to keep up with. Fashion, décor, and all seasonal elements play into what you will see in weddings in any particular year. With inspiration like Pinterest at every bride’s fingertips, the options can seem overwhelming and as a first time customer, sometimes it can be difficult to focus on what most appeals to you. Trends flow through the wedding industry just like any other market and it can be helpful to understand what the upcoming trends will be if you are hoping to stay at the front of the tide and not miss the boat. Just be sure not to jump on board simply because it’s “what’s done.” Just like fashion, finding your own style is your goal to be sure that your wedding reflects the feel of who you two are as people.

One thing to keep in mind is what is trending in California is not necessarily the same thing as what will be trending in the Koots. The “rustic wedding” trend still has a firm grasp on the Kootenays because it fits so well here. This doesn’t mean you can’t still incorporate some of the things that will be in fash-ion elsewhere.

2015 will see a lot of hanging greenery. Floral chandeliers hit the stage last year but this year it will

be all about green, green and more green. Hanging a garland of ivy and eucalyptus above the length of the table means that you need just bits of it on the table with a few candles or lanterns to tie the whole look together. Either hang a ‘green’ chandelier over each table or hang a full garland over the head table and pull the look down with a centerpiece made from the same flora for the rest.

The “soft modern” look continues in 2015. Anemones and succulents will still be seen in bouquets and décor and “unstructured” arrangements will continue to grow in popularity. Gold isn’t going to slow down so mixing greenery with brass and ‘warm’ metallics will be a great foundation for whatever style you adhere to. Rough and organic fabrics such as linen rather than burlap will help you to soften the

typical rustic look into a softer version. Another look that has had staying power with weddings and fits well into our local setting is the

English Garden Party. If you have wide expanses of lawn, filling urns with large blooms such as hydran-gea and cabbage roses with as much ivy as you can lay hands on will give you a completely different feel than the rustic barn wedding. Again, the unstructured arrangements here are the new aspect of this look. Rather than being overly formal, they are now low and hanging “just so” over the edges of the bowl or low footed planter you might use as a table centerpiece. While the rustic look tries to portray the feeling of gathered wildflowers, the garden look is a fully styled lack of formality.

Something that will stay en vogue into the foreseeable future is using blooms that are in season and ideally grown locally, not only because of the ecological impact of chemicals, but also because it is what looks most natural.

As opposed to weddings during the time of our parents and grandparents, where structure and tradi-

tion were key, today’s couple strives to give a relaxed feeling to their guests. In such a visually striking place as the Kootenays, it is best to work with the seasons and strive for something in your décor that has a natural feel. This doesn’t mean you can’t be formal. In fact the best version of formality un-derstands the flow of space and emphasizes strengths in structure. So work with what you have and use your florals and details to create a look that is not contrived but rather, the most fabulous version possible.

It took a small ski resort in a Kootenay mountain town for Edmonton-native Laureta Boychuck and Idaho-born Ben Greenland to cross paths. “We both worked at Whitewater and every day, I would skip through the rental shop where Ben was a tech. I was always hooting and hollering excited to go skiing that we didn’t formally meet until a friend introduced us in downtown Nelson on December 31, 2010,” explains Laureta.

Over the next year, Ben and Laureta courted each other, falling in love over a long-distance - Laureta moved to Fernie in 2011 to complete MAST - Mountaineering and Adventure Skills Training and Ben continued to work in Nelson at Whitewater.

“When we did see each other we would always be outside recreating,” explains Laureta. “We love skiing, hiking, paddling and doing pretty much anything that allows us to be outside.”

Finally in the fall of 2011, Laureta secured a job as WH2O’s school-group coordinator where Ben continued to work as the head technician. The two commuted together to the ski hill everyday and fell more and more in love, “We were living the ski bum’s dream, but had a partner,” says Laureta.

On February 19, 2013, in true Kootenay style, the two skied with friends to celebrate their engage-ment. “The day holds special significance because a few years ago, Ben’s mom passed away on this day and it is also the day he chooses to celebrate her spirit. Because Ben chose to propose on this day, it is a special day of celebration for us.”

Laureta explains the wedding planning was fun, relaxed and stress-free. “That is the way weddings should be. We didn’t want to spend a whack of money but we wanted it to be special.”

On March 8, 2014, the two whisked their guests up to WH20 to fulfill Laureta’s childhood dream of skiing on her wedding day, “When I was younger, I told my friend I was going to climb to the top of a mountain and form a heart in the snow with my husband on the way down.”

The two opted to trade up the heart for “Blast”, the couples favourite WH2O’s ski run. The plan was to have the bridal party ski “Blast” and jump off the last cat track to meet all the guests at the bottom of the Summit chair. Considering Best Man John Rainey is from Mississippi and not an experienced skier, the idea was risky, but with a practice run, the bridal party was ready to shred.

“It was amazing,” Laureta explains, “The exact moment the wind blew the taped veil off my helmet, the snow started – I remember smiling thinking Ben’s Mom has arrived.”

It was a sentiment that both Ben and Laureta later articulated to each other. Ben’s mom had brought the snow and as a special gift, delivered what Laureta and Ben had wished – face shots.

Thanks to Ullr and Ben’s Mom, the bride and groom had fresh tracks down “Blast” along with Best Man, John Rainey and Maid-of-honour, Chandrima Lavoie. Among boughs of cedar scattered at the base of Summit Chair and toques covered in snow, the guests toasted the couple with hot chocolate.

“I can’t even explain how I felt – it was a perfect,” says Laureta.Following the beautiful ceremony with Ymir Peak as their backdrop, the two ushered their guests

to Whitewater’s lodge. Although Laureta had grandiose plans for her wedding look, she opted for the Kootenay casual look, “I just wanted to party with my family – I didn’t want to waste this precious time on make-up.”

After a quick change from ski gear to a simple, yet elegant white wedding dress, she quickly braided her hair and joined the party.

As guests enjoyed the cozy timber-framed lodge, a full-on snow storm was wreaking havoc outside. “I hadn’t realized that an avalanche had actually closed the Whitewater road earlier in the evening. As I was enjoying the party, Whitewater‘s staff was dealing with the logistics of clearing the road so some of our guests could actually get up to the lodge for our after-dinner party.

Whitewater catered the event and their reputation as a foodie’s ski hill did not disappoint, “With our group, they had to cater to a lot of dietary restrictions and they did a great job – the food was amazing.”

The night continued into the early morning with Laureta and her father demonstrating how a two-step is really done and ending with the entire group of 50 guests engaged in a snowball fight.

“It was great that my prairie family and Ben’s family could experience why Ben and I now call the Kootenays home.”

The thunderous dark clouds were rolling in at an alarming pace, causing Casey and Shawna’s atten-tion to shift from one another to the large cottonwood trees that bordered their outdoor altar.

The trees shifted and cracked overhead, grabbing the attention of wedding guests who also won-dered when the downpour would let loose. But as the vows were exchanged, the sky grew quiet and was lit up with a pink sunset. The calm after the storm was like two worlds had just literally collided.

The weather was only one of the surprises at the Southwick’s summer wedding in August of last year. The Calgary couple decided to take advantage of the groom’s parents’ 85-acre organic you-pick blueberry farm nestled in the mountains above Christina Lake.

Casey’s mom Linda has spent a couple of decades masterfully creating a landscape that encom-passes the property. That said, the venue still needed some polishing and she jokes the wedding merely “gave good reason to put a fire under her husband Bob’s butt.”

Beyond the perfect backdrop to their wedding day, the couple were happy to get away from the “I needed that yesterday” mentality and have a destination wedding in Casey’s hometown. The wedding wasn’t about having the designer dress, stretch limo or champagne and caviar; it was about two fami-lies coming together.

It quickly became clear that the community of 30-some-odd people was not just going to watch from the sidelines as the family poured their hearts into preparing for the big day. In true Kootenay form, friends and neighbours offered their backs and their hands and helped the family successfully realize the vintage garden party vision.

“Everyone was willing and ready to help out,” recalls Casey from his home in Calgary. “I don’t have a lot of extended family in the area; they’re mostly from the States, but growing up in Fife everyone was like family.”

The pastor’s wife played the harp as the couple made their way down the aisle, and she later kicked the entertainment up a notch when she joined her daughters and other performers in a can-can num-ber. Shawna baked the cupcakes, her family made the rest of the desserts and Casey’s mom gathered most of the bouquet flowers from her garden.

Although there were some professionals hired for the event, such as Nelson wedding photographer Bobbi Barbarich of Three Owls Studio and barbeque master Neil Krog of Twisted Forks Catering, many of the adorable details came together with help from family and friends.

“It was a crazy amount of work in the few weeks leading up to the wedding, and everything seemed so chaotic, but once the day came it was absolutely surreal,” added Casey.

The couple elected to do a letter exchange before the traditional ceremony began. With a door be-tween them, Casey shared a poem he wrote for Shawna promising a life full of adventure and Shawna gave her groom a keepsake box filled with various symbolic gifts, including a few pairs of socks — just

in case he got cold feet. The harp signaled the children to begin the ceremony by starting down the aisle, and all was going

well until they spotted a Pomeranian tied up off to the side, prompting them to completely disregard the plan in favour of veering off course to greet the dog. The comedy continued as the maid of honour carried out a sign that said ‘Here Comes the Bride — last chance to run!’

The groom, however, needed no warning; he’s yet to find one flaw over the years — even jabs to the ribs have eventually grown on him.

Neither was actually looking for love when they joined the dating website Plenty of Fish over five years ago. Both had just exited long-term relationships and wanted to meet more friends.

“I did not post one flattering picture because I wasn’t looking to date anyone and I didn’t want to give that impression,” says Shawna. But her sense of humour attracted Casey to her profile and after contacting her, the two met for a walk, which lasted three hours and was followed by dinner.

“We got along really well,” said Shawna. “We started off as friends and we were able to have really open conversations and talk about our values, and it was only a matter of months before he won me over.”

She views the eight-year relationship she had prior to meeting Casey as merely time she spent figur-ing out what was missing.

“You sometimes think that you’ll never have everything, but after I met him I realized that no —

I don’t have to compromise how I deserve to be treated.”

Communication was what formed their bond, and shared values then brought them together as husband and wife.

The Kootenay charm has left a lasting impression on the two, who hope to make Christina Lake or one of its surrounding communities home in the near future. Casey, a 33-year-old mechanic, is already considering a brew master course in hopes of supporting the couple’s dream to open a micro-brewery. Shawna, a 31-year-old graphic artist, said the business endeavor would be a solution to finding year-round steady work.

After convincing most of their wedding guests to make that initial trip to Fife, the two are confident that should they relocate, they’ll never have a hard time filling their spare rooms with visitors.

“I did get some pushback initially when I told everyone where we were getting married,” said Shaw-na. “I tried to explain that they had to see it to understand. When my family did get there, one of my uncles came up to me and said ‘I understand now,’ and my family forged some great friendships with the neighbours and are already looking forward to coming back.”
