Lure of the rings
By Perry Lefko
With the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia on the horizon, this year’s Masters Grand Slam event takes on added importance beyond just the money.
The $200,000 cashspiel, which runs Oct. 29 to Nov. 3 at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, features a total of 30 men’s and women’s teams from 13 different nations, some of whom have already been selected by their country’s fed-eration to represent them in the OIympics.
Among the international stand-outs are reigning men’s world champion Niklas Edin of Sweden; 2010 Olympic silver medalist Thomas Ulsrud; 2013 women’s world champ Eve Muirhead of Scotland; and 2010 Olympic bronze medalist Bingyu Wang of China.
Canada will also be extremely well-represented, as all of the
rinks who have pre-qualifi ed for the Canadian Olympic trials Dec. 1-8 in Winnipeg – six men’s and six women’s teams – will be at the Masters.
That group includes 2010 Olympic gold medalist Kevin Martin along with Glenn Howard, Jeff Stoughton, Kevin Koe, Mike McEwen and John Epping on the men’s side, and defending Scotties Tournament of Hearts champ Rachel Homan, Jennifer Jones, Heather Nedohin, Stefanie Lawton, Sherry Middaugh and Chelsea Carey on the women’s side.
“We have absolutely every-body there that’s going to have a chance to go to the Olympics or has already qualifi ed,” noted Pierre Charette, president of the World Competitive Curlers Asso-ciation. “That’s pretty cool.”
Howard said the format of this year’s Masters is great because of the opportunity to play other countries and their representa-
tives for the Olympics.“We pretty much know most
of them or all of them, but just the fact you get to play them is really neat,” Howard said. “That format is really cool. It’s going to
be huge for us to play all those teams and at the same time pre-paring for the trials in December.”
One team that will be notice-ably absent from the Masters is skipped by reigning Canadian
men’s champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie. He is playing in the fi nal qualifying event for the Olympic trials, taking place in Kitchener the day after the Masters.
Abbotsford’s Grand Slam event takes on added signifi cance with Olympics approaching
Scotland’s Eve Muirhead, the reigning women’s world champ, will be part of a stellar fi eld hunting for the title at the Masters Grand Slam event in Abbotsford. Anil Mungal / Grand Slam of Curling

Sportsnet has helped raise profi le of Grand Slam of CurlingBy Perry Lefko
Sportsnet slides into a second season own-ing and operating the Grand Slam of Curling, a series of four premier cashspiel events that feature the most-lucrative purses and bonus money on the World Curling Tour.
The fi rst event in that series is the Masters, which runs Oct. 29 to Nov. 3 at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre and features a prize purse of $200,000.
SERIES FORMATFollowing the Masters, the remaining men’s
Grand Slam events continue with the Canadi-an Open (Nov. 13-17 in Medicine Hat, Alta.), the National (March 12-16 in Fort McMurray,
Alta.), and the Players’ Championship (April 15-20 in Summerside, PEI).
For the second consecutive year, Sportsnet is offering a $1 million bonus for any men’s team that sweeps all four Slams. If there is no sweep, the team with the most points collects a $50,000 bonus, the runner-up $30,000 and third-place team $20,000.
If a women’s team sweeps the Masters and Players’ Championship they will collect $100,000. If there is no sweep, the top team will collect a $12,500 bonus, the runnerup $7,500 and the third-place fi nisher $5,000.
TV COVERAGEThrough the involvement of Sportsnet and
a sublicensing agreement with the CBC, the
Grand Slam events receive blanket television coverage and support on multiple platforms. Sportsnet realized the value of curling as a sport embraced by Canadians of all ages.
When the Slams faced an uncertain future, Rogers entered into a partnership with the World Competitive Curlers Association in August 2012 to own and operate the tour-naments and provide a greater commitment, both in terms of money and overall multi-plat-form production.
“In Abbotsford, all the top teams will be shown at least once during a week,” said Pierre Charette, president of the World Com-petitive Curlers Association. “They might play three or four TV games if they through to the
playoffs. A lot of these teams have deals with their sponsors that every time they’re on TV they get a bonus.”
WOMEN ON BOARDThough the Slams began in 2001, it was
only last year when Sportsnet came aboard that women were given a chance to play in the Masters.
Ontario’s Sherry Middaugh said it was important for the women to be included in the Masters because it allowed them to gain exposure.
“When you have a Slam event you’re getting the best of the best,” she noted. “It’s not just another bonspiel. You’re playing the top teams in the world.”
Heather Nedohin (left) and Kevin Martin (right) will be among the elite Canadian skips at the Masters.

It’s a great time to be a curling fan in Abbotsford
If you happen to be, or would like to be, a curling aficionado then you are in the right place at the right time.
Of course everyone knows that Canada has the best curlers (and hockey players) on the planet – right? Au con-traire mon frere! (Yes, I am completely bilingual).
Let us not forget that the current world titles are held by Sweden’s Niklas Edin and Scotland’s Eve Muirhead. Actually it is a surprising and somewhat mortifying fact that the Canadian women haven’t won the Worlds since Jennifer Jones in 2008.
It would appear, therefore, that unlike the “World Series” or the NFL “World Championship”, if you actually play against other coun-tries you might not win. The same theory holds true if you are holding a curling bonspiel with a world-class
field.Fortunately the
Masters Grand Slam of Curling will be follow-ing this formula at the Abbotsford Enter-tainment and Sports Centre from Oct. 29 to Nov. 3. The elite field will feature 30 rinks vying for $200,000 in prize money.
In addition to last year’s world champi-ons, teams from China,
Denmark, the U.S., Korea, Germany, Switzerland and Norway will be in attendance.
Canada will counter with names like Martin, Stoughton and How-ard on the men’s side with Homan, Jones, Nedohin, et al for the women.
Hopefully this event, if well attend-ed, will lead to future world-class events.

With the Masters Grand Slam of Curling just around the corner, the excitement is palpable at the Abbotsford Curling Club.
“It’s incredibly cool,” said Ken MacDon-ald, general manager of the local club. “We’ve got a lot of people who are volun-teering, and a lot of people saying they’re going over to watch.
“They know that it’s the best event in the world, other than the Olympics, in this coming year, because the men and women are both here and all the teams are invited
that are also going to be showing up at the Olympics.”
The Abby club is taking an active role with the Grand Slam event – they’re helping to promote it throughout the Lower Main-land curling community, and MacDonald and Debbie Sand are spearheading the organization of volunteers. A small army of 100 volunteers is needed to make the bon-spiel truly hum, and MacDonald said they still have room for more helpers.
The club is also running a membership drive in conjunction with the Masters, and will have a booth set up at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.
MacDonald is hopeful that having a high-profi le Grand Slam event will help boost interest in curling locally, and he’s passionate about seeing the sport cross cultural boundaries.
“It’s not a traditional sport for Indo-Cana-dians, it’s not a traditional sport for Afri-cans,” he noted. “But we’re getting both of those groups coming out here (to the club) and having a lot of fun.
“Our easiest thing for people to take advantage of is Wednesday nights, when we have space for novices and people who want to learn to curl in a league environment.”
Other opportunities afforded to the local
club by the Masters event include a coach-ing symposium on Saturday, Nov. 2 from noon to 6 p.m. which will connect coach-es from around the Lower Mainland with instruction from elite coaches. Cost is $80, and includes a free ticket to the afternoon Masters draw.
Additionally, the top two boys and girls teams from the Abby club’s recent junior cashspiel will get to play an exhibition at theAESC on Nov. 2 after the ladies’ semifi nal.
To volunteer to help at the Grand Slam or for more information about the Abbotsford Curling Club, call 604-859-9244 or email [email protected].
