From ticket taking to bartending to catering to tours,

there isn’t a job in the RCA that Judy Mellon hasn’t done. This year, the RCA recognizes

Mellon for her ve years of dedicated service.

Local volunteer celebrates fi ve years with the RCA

For Judy Mellon, the Rotary Cen-tre for the Arts was the fi rst volunteer opportunity she deliberately sought out – and since she started with the arts venue in 2010, she’s made her presence known. RCA staff say the volunteer is always welcoming, and takes pride in showcasing the best of the arts centre.

“I’m originally from Calgary,” Mellon says. “I retired here in 2009. I wanted to get involved in something, but didn’t know what. I love creativity and art, and so when I saw the RCA I thought I’d re-ally enjoy doing something there – and so it just kind of started.”

After retiring from the banking industry, she moved to Kelowna and almost immediately started looking for an opportunity to give back. And now, fi ve years after starting her volunteer position with the RCA, she still loves volunteering.

“(The RCA) makes volunteers feel great. I was surprised at the apprecia-tion they give their volunteers. They’re so thankful that we come.”

Mellon has served as a ticket taker, caterer, usher, and bartender for the RCA. Two years ago, she started guid-ing tours of the facility – and now, she’s also a frequent volunteer at the RCA’s salsa nights.

“There are a lot of exchange stu-dents coming through at the salsa nights,” she says. “I’ve met all sorts of people from all over the world. There’s a great energy at the salsa nights, plus it’s fun to watch.”

For Mellon, the RCA is just part of a great downtown full of opportunities to enjoy the arts.

“There’s so much culture and talent here in Downtown Kelowna. There’s free entertainment that happens all the time. There are lots of art galleries to enjoy, and it’s in a beautiful area.”

program involves helping mentally ill individuals to find support. The program’s two-tiered approach combines a hard, factual base with a supportive, emotion-oriented focus.

“We use a lot of the information coming out of the DSM-IV (the American Psychiatric Association’s diagnostic manual). We also talk a lot about our feelings. We learn about how medication works on the brain. We talk about problem solving, communication styles, and spirituality. And it’s all done in an easy-to-understand way.”

At the McNair Unit, Koops gives

informational sessions on various hobbies. People who struggle with recovery often forget to have fun, Koops says, and hobby sessions are a great way to help patients enjoy life.

For Koops, seeing people take the right steps toward recovery is the most rewarding part of his work.

“I love being up in the hospital. I have bipolar disorder, and I’ve had my stay up in the psychiatric ward. I know what it’s like to feel lost and not know what to do with oneself. I love meeting the people there and introducing them to the BCSS and CMHA. I get to see people take the same steps I took.”

Eimert Koops has been volunteering as the Director of the British Columbia Schizophrenia Society for 4 years, and in that time, he’s advocated for people with mental illnesses by running presentations, hosting workshops, and facilitating support groups.

Eimert Koops first got involved with the BC Schizophrenia Society in 2011, after taking the organization’s BRIDGES course. At the end of the course, the BCSS asked if he’d like to become a BRIDGES teacher – and as a member of the CMHA Alumnus Development Center, he knew a lot of people who could benefit from the program.

“The CMHA was my first volunteer experience,” he says. “I was a peer support facilitator and a mentor for their 1-to-1 program. Around that same time I started volunteering at the hospital in the McNair Unit.”

Being a jack-of-all-trades can come in handy for any community organiza-tion, and the value of Kurt Becker in that role for the CRIS Adaptive Ade-ventures organization is no different.

Becker has been a tireless volun-teer and advocate for CRIS since it was started in 2001, an organization committed to providing outdoor pursuit opportunities for people with disabilities.

Becker has embarked on 5,300 hours of adaptive adventure trips, which include kayaking, hiking and biking. That amounts to more than half a year of volunteering at 24 hours per day. And that number only rep-resents his trip hours since 2007.

It doesn’t include all the extra help Becker provides to keep the CRIS programs running in his 14 years of volunteer involvement with CRIS dating back to 2001.

If Becker wasn’t around, those CRIS programs would be severely impacted, for he fi xes all the special-ized adaptive equipment for those outdoor trips. And he mows the lawn, fi xes the roof, trims the trees and looks after the CRIS fl eet of specialized vehicles that make all the

outdoor trips possible. While Becker isn’t particularly look-

ing for public recognition, he went along with this profi le with the hope it would help spread the message about CRIS.

And that message is this:

CRIS recognizes that impairments can not only be physical, but emotional and

mental as well. Its day programs operate through-

out the Okanagan, providing special-ized trips to places such as the Gulf Islands, Bowron Lakes, Yoho National Park and more.

If you are interested in being a volunteer, the only prerequisite is to be up for an adventure!”

Kelowna Community

Food Bank

CENTRAL OKANAGAN COMMUNITY FOOD BANK

“One of the things I keep learning is that the secret of being happy is doing things for other people.” (Dick Gregory)Did you know the Kelowna food bank distributes over $150,000 in food to more than 2,500 individuals (approximately 33% are children) every month? It takes a mountain of food to meet this need, and an army of volunteers to operate the Central Okanagan Community Food Bank.

Through volunteering, the Central Okanagan Food Bank connects with a broad cross-section of our community other than those it serves with food and nutrition programs. It provides people an opportunity to interact and develop relationships. For some, it is simply a way of giving back, to bring a good deed from charitable place in their heart, with a smile as payment. For others, it is a vehicle that engages them in their community, creating a sense of belonging and self-worth, and taking pride working at meaningful jobs in a place where they are treated with respect and dignity.

Fifteen years ago, Rosslyn Ellett decided to start volunteering for the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation.

As a trained nurse, and her husband being a doctor, Ellett knew the value of what the foundation provides to the quality of health care at KGH—pro-viding funds to purchase new medical equipment, providing bursaries and helping out with the foundation’s hos-pital services such as the snack bar and coffee shop.

Ellett has probably put in more than 7,000 hours as a foundation volunteer at KGH.

She started in what was known then as the General’s Snackery for two years, then moved to manage The Perking Lot, the coffee kiosk at KGH.

That little coffee shop started out raising $200 a day. Ellett has since worked with the foundation business team to where the venue now gener-ates $1 million in sales this past year.

She volunteers as a cash reconciler for all the business venues the founda-tion owns and operates with volunteer staff. Ellett is also a member of the Kelowna Hospital Auxiliary, and serves as the liaison for the KGH Capital Equipment Program.

In this position, she helps the aux-iliary membership to understand the equipment needs of KGH and guide them through the fundraising group’s purchase donations for the hospital.

Ellett also helps out as scheduler/trainer for new volunteers at The Perk-ing Lot, and works with the engraving team, another new business venture initiated by the foundation.

“When I moved to Kelowna (from

Winnipeg), I wanted to find a way to get to know my new community, and volunteering for the hospital seemed a natural way for me to do that,” Ellett said.

Known to put in a 40-hour week volunteering, Ellett said she finds it a very satisfying way to spend her time. “It’s a wonderful cause and I’m happy to do it.”

She says the hospital is a happy place for her to be, working amidst an oasis from the stress and grief that medical staff, patients and visitors might otherwise be encoun-tering elsewhere in the facility.

“People are always happy to see

us there, doing what we are doing, some-thing just as simple as offer-ing the

opportunity to have a cup of coffee. A day rarely goes by that someone doesn’t say thanks for being there,” she said.

She said visitors to KGH are often amazed of the services provided by foundation volunteers.

“It is pretty incredible but we’re all trying to be helpful to help make the hospital a better place for every-one,” she said.

Local volunteer Sarah Crittenden is a lead docent at the art gallery and has been involved in gallery special events like Culture Days and Creative Aging Day for several years.

Sarah Crittenden has been volun-teering in the health industry for years, but one meeting with an artsy friend had her hooked on art.

“I had a friend who was working at the art gallery,” Crittenden says. “I found out they had volunteer posi-tions. I’m a nurse, and I’ve carried on with it while volunteering. I liked the art gallery, and I knew I wanted to get involved, but the challenge was fitting it around my schedule.”

Crittenden has been involved in a variety of activities at the art gallery, including the annual Culture Days celebration, when the gallery invites children in to create their own art. Crittenden has also assisted with events like Engaging with Art – a free tour and discussion hosted on the first Thursday of every month - and Cre-ative Aging Day, an event that cele-brates and examines the role that art and creativity can play in promoting health and wellness into old age.

When she’s not volunteering at the art gallery, Crittenden enjoys working on her vegetable garden and staying fit.

“I like to run, swim, and do yoga. I have a knitting group, a book club, and a garden club, and we meet quite often.”

Crittenden says that her favourite part of volunteering at the art gallery is the children, who tend to be more insightful than most would believe.

“I’m not a teacher, I’m a nurse – so I didn’t expect the children to be so humourous. Their humour was surpris-

ing and very insightful.”She says that for those who are

interested in volunteering, the art gallery offers something for every-one.

“If you’re shy, you can be an assis-tant docent – or you can volunteer in the evening, which is great because you get to meet the artists and see panel discussions.”
