Thursday Morning Bible StudyWhat Matters Most

This Fall we will use Karen Ehman’s Book, What Matters Most. Ehman is a Proverbs 31 ministries speaker and author of twelve books. This is a study of Philippians and will be led by Kelley Taylor, Jo Ellen Stewart, Mary Rice, Gaye Cook and Donna Oswalt. Childcare is provided, but you must register. Pastor’s Perspective

Some weeks I have to spend a little extra time figuring out what I want to write about in this column. Not this week. We have just weathered a hurricane of historic proportions. And we aren’t done yet. As I write these words, the Cape Fear River won’t crest for another 24-36 hours. At a projected level not seen since the 1940s. Thousands have been displaced from their homes. Many are still without power. The road to recovery is only just beginning. It promises to be long and difficult for many.

Not knowing how this storm would unfold, I wrestled with the decision to call off services on Sunday. I knew some might appreciate the opportunity to gather with other believers in the middle of the storm. Still, at decision time on Saturday, there were too many unknowns and too many risk factors in play to try to pull even one service together. I didn’t want anyone to feel obligated to be here if we were meeting. Our time would be better spent helping our neighbors in need or just hunkering down in a safe place with our loved ones to ride out the storm. It warmed my heart to see pictures of our church members on mission in our community helping their neighbors and hearing stories of others opening up their homes to folks without power or needing to evacuate their own homes. The church in action is always a beautiful sight.

With our son deployed, Amber and the boys came to stay with us. We had church in our home as a family Sunday morning. It can be challenging to keep the attention of a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old for very long, but they were focused on the Bible story book we were using. Especially when we got to the story of Jesus stilling the storm on the sea. We talked about the fact that we don’t ever need to be afraid when storms come if we know Jesus and trust Him to take care of us. I love the faith of little children. Jesus did, too. We adults could follow their example sometimes in our own faith walk.

We ended the day, as we always do, with a time of prayer before we put them to bed. Carson (age 4) prayed that the hurricane wouldn’t hurt his daddy in Afghanistan. I told him not to worry. This was a big storm, but not that big. Our needs this week are many. And they are great. But our God is greater. And He promises to supply every one of our needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
