Forced cooled electric motorCombimachasdevelopedvariousvarietiesofforcedcooledelectricmotorstosuitimmersibleorsubmersibleapplications.Oftenelectricmotorshavetoperformtheirnominalpowerratingwhenrunningbothdryorwet.Astheseelectricmotorsarecontinuouslycooledbymeansofaforcedliquidflow,eitherwater,oiloranyotheravailablecoolingliquid,theycanprovidemaximumpowerbothinsubmergedanddryconditions.Otherfeaturesofthisdesignaretheverylowairbornenoiselevelsproducedbythesetypesofelectricmotorsandthelackofheatdissipationtoitsenvironmentthat,insomeinstances,canbeofvitalimportance.Alsobecauseoftheirmoreefficientcoolingcomparedwithair-cooledelectricmotorsahighoutputinsmallframesizesispossible.Thesetypesofelectricmotors,normallyprovidedwithIECstandardflangesandshaftextensions,canbefullymanufacturedinaccordancewiththecustomer’srequirements.Furthermoretheforcedcooledelectricmotorsprovidethefollowingfeatures:

Permanent magnet motorsTheuseofpermanentmagnetstocreateaconstantfluxintheairgap,resultsinsynchronousperformancewiththerobustdesignofanasynchronousinductionmotor.Thepermanentmagnetsaremadefromneodymiumironboron(NdFeB)orsamariumcobalt(SmCo).Bothmaterialsprovidethepowerfulmagneticmaterialatroomtemperature,withhighfluxdensityathighmagnetization.BasedonthesedesignfeaturesCombimacareabletoofferACpermanentmagnetmotors.
Applicationsthatrequirehightorqueatlowspeedsoftenusesynchronousmotorswithreducers,asstandardinductionmotorsgenerateplentyoftorque,butunfortunatelynotatlowspeeds.Thereforetheyarenotparticularlysuitedforlow-speedoperationbecausetheirefficiencydropswithreducedspeed.However,gearboxestakeupspace,reduceefficiencyandneedbothmaintenanceandconstantlubrication.Eliminatingthegearboxsavesspaceandinstallationcosts,energyandmaintenance,andprovidesmoreflexibilityinproductionlineandfacilitydesign.

Synchronousmotordesignsusingpermanentmagnetsmakeitpossibletohavelowspeedandhightorqueinonepackage,eliminatinggearboxesandothermechanicalcomponents.Alsoforhighspeedapplicationspermanentmagnetmotorsprovideimprovedproperties.Becauseofitsnature,PMmachinescanbeusedbothasmotorandasgenerator.Asgeneratortheseareoftenusedin(super)yachts,whereitscompactnessandverylowheatemissionarewellvalued.Furthermore,thegeneratordoesnothavetorunatfixedspeedsof1500rpmor1800rpm;thespeedisbestchosentosuitthedieselengineorgasturbine.

DC-motorsusedonboardsubmarines,whichshouldbeabletorunfromthebatteriesintheeventofapowerfailureonboardthesubmarines,isatotallydifferentapplicationdemandingadifferentspectrumofrequirementsandlimitingoperatingconditions.AgainCombimacisabletodesign,engineerandmanufacturesuitablemotorsforthesepurposes.

Brake motors
Combimacisabletoofferawiderangeofelectricbrakemotorsforseveralapplicationsandinawidevarietyofdesignsandmodels.Brakemotorscanbothbeprovidedwithstoppingaswellasholdingbrakes.Stoppingbrakesarebeingusedforbrakingtherotarymovements,whilstholdingbrakesarebeingusedwhenafullylockedmotorisrequiredwhentheelectricmotorisnotbeingoperated.

Combimacdesignsandmanufacturesoilcooledelectricmotorswiththreedifferenttypesofcoolingmethods.Oneversionprovidessurfaceoilcoolingandtheotherversionshaveinternaloilcooling.
Surface cooledSurfaceoilcooledelectricmotorsareprovidewithaseparatecoolingjacket.Thecoolingoiliscoolingtheoutsideofthemotorstator,whereasthemotorinternalpartsaredryrunning.Toguaranteeasufficientamountofcooling,thecoolingmantlesaremanufacturedfrombronzealloyoraluminium.
Internally cooledUnlikesurfacecooledelectricmotors,thecoolingoilisrunningthroughthemotor,providinganoptimumcooling.Thecoolingoilatthesametimeisusedtolubricatethemotorbearings,oftenleadingtoasimplifiedelectricmotordesign.
Canned motorsAnotheroptionforaninternallycooledelectricmotoristohaveinternallyoilcooledmotors,providingtheuseofacan,thesocalledcannedmotors.Thismethodisusedtopreventthestatorwindinggettingincontactwithapossiblyaggressivecoolingmediumtoavoidanyriskofdeteriorationofthewindings.

Combimacdesignsandmanufactureswatercooledelectricmotorswithtwodifferenttypesofcoolingmethods.Oneversionprovidessurfacewatercoolingandtheotherversionprovidesinternalwatercooling.
Surface cooledSurfacewatercooledelectricmotorsareprovidewithaseparatecoolingjacketontheoutsideofthemotor.Thecoolingwateriscoolingtheoutsideofthemotorstator,whereasthemotorinternalpartsremaindryrunning.Thecoolingmantlesdependingonthetypeofwater,forexamplefreshorseawater,canbemanufacturedfromavarietyofmaterials.Otherfeaturesofthisdesignaretheverylowairbornenoiselevelsproducedbythesetypesofelectricmotorsandthelackofheatdissipationtoitsenvironmentthat,insomeinstances,canbeofvitalimportance.Alsobecauseoftheirmoreefficientcoolingcomparedwithair-cooledelectricmotorsahighoutputinsmallframesizesispossible.
Canned motorsThesameprincipleusedinoilcooledmotorscanbeusedinwatercooledmotors.Usingacanpreventsthestatorwindinggettingincontactwithapossiblyaggressivecoolingmediumtoavoidanyriskofdeteriorationofthewindings.

FortheapplicationofelectricmotorsinhazardousenvironmentsCombimacisabletodesignandmanufactureelectricmotorsinaccordancewiththeATEX2014/34/EUdirective.ExplosionprotectionforelectricmotorstoIEC60079areclassifiedinaccordancewiththefollowingcategoriesprotectiontypes.
Flameproof enclosure “d” ElectricmotorapparatusdestinedforZones1and2(IEC60079-14),ElectricalEquipmentforHazardousAreas(exceptformines).TheconstructionalrequirementsareinaccordancewithIEC60079-1.Theprotectionconceptisdefinedsothatallpotentialignitionsourcesarehousedinsideaflameproofenclosure.Unavoidablesealingsurfacesarethereforedesignedasflameproofjoints,sothat,incaseofignitionofanexplosiveatmosphereinsidetheenclosure,theexplosiveatmosphereisnottransferredtothepotentiallyexplosiveatmospheresurroundingtheenclosure.Theapplicationisforalltypeofmotors,suchassquirrelcage,commutator,permanentmagnetandallmodesofoperations(S1toS9).Suitablealsoforseverestartingconditionsandvariablespeeddrives.
Increased safety “eb”ElectricmotorapparatusdestinedforZones1and2.TheconstructionalrequirementsareinaccordancewithIEC60079-7.Theprotectionconceptdefines,stepsmustbetakentoensurethatthecreationofsparks,electricarcsandinadmissibleheatingprocessesispreventedduringproperoperationoftheapparatus.
Theapplicationisonlyforsquirrelcagemotorswithadaptedmotorprotectionswitches.
Increased safety “ec” ElectricmotorapparatusdestinedforZone2.TheconstructionalrequirementsareinaccordancewithIEC60079-7.Theprotectionconceptisdefinedas,undernormaloperationconditions,nosparks,electricarcsorinadmissibletemperaturesmayoccur.Theapplicationisforalltypesofelectricmotorswithmotorprotectionswitchesandoverpressuremonitoring.PreventionofsparkscreatedundernormaloperatingconditionsshouldbeimplementedandManufacturers’informationaboutthesemeasuresisprovided.BoththeflameproofandincreasedsafetyrequireanEUtypetestingcertificatefromanaccreditedNotifiedBody.Thisisnotrequiredforthenon-sparkingversions.Combimacisabletoofferall3types,includingthenecessarytypetestingcertificates.

Thislowweightadvantagecanbeexploitedevenmorebydesigningitclosecoupledtotheequipmentwhichhastobedriven,asdoneonmanyoccasionsforseveralpumpmanufacturers.
