EDMAR D. Bandoja graduated as magna cum laude in the five-year BS in Accountancy degree program of the College of Management. With a GWA of 1.332, he has attained the highest mark in his college, and the second highest in UPV.

He said that he wants to work as soon as possible in

the midst of this pandemic because he is the expected breadwinner of his family.

“They need me now more than ever. The current situation further compelled me to find work as soon as possible since this pandemic continuously affects one of my parent’s source of income. My college

degree will provide me opportunities better than what my parents currently have. After all their sacrifices and efforts to help me, it is now my turn to pay them back including those who helped me achieve my dreams.

When asked how he felt to be CM’s top student, he has this to say:

Flores is UPV’s Class 2020 Valedictorian

“GRADUATING as valedictorian this year seems to be anticlimactic due to the pandemic, nevertheless it is still a blessing for me to receive this distinction. MARY Gold R. David is the lone graduate of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences with honors, cum laude.

When asked what her thoughts are on graduating in the midst of pandemic she has this to say:

“Looking at how difficult it is to conduct an online graduation, the technical aspects and what nots, I am at peace. But

mentally and emotionally, it is distressing. Not only for me but certainly for the rest of the Iskolar ng Bayans who already envisioned themselves proudly wearing their sablays in June of this year when UP would have its graduation ceremonies. Nevertheless, everyone’s safety is the topmost priority given the global health crisis we are facing right now.

This pandemic teaches

us to value health and family more than ever. Most importantly, witnessing this crisis and other crisis we can think of and despite the cancellation of the graduation exercises this year, I believe that these cannot affect the pride and sense of achievement that the graduating Iskolar ng Bayans have. UP will always deeply inspire and constantly remind us that we are for the

people. And that we shall serve this nation better.” (Lyncen M. Fernandez)

MAYONA Paula T. Alcala leads the graduates of UP Visayas Tacloban College. The BS Accountancy major shared her thoughts on life after graduation and seeking employment in the midst of the pandemic.

“My immediate thoughts at the moment

is preparing for the board exam. But thinking about the next step, that is finding work, has been stressful given the predicament that our country and the whole world is facing. With pressing social issues that are rampant in the midst of this global pandemic, I often ask myself if reviewing for the CPA bar is what I should I be doing now.

This pandemic has certainly changed me and the entire world. It made us stop and think about

matters most – it revived the bayanihan spirit and strengthened familial relationships.

If this pandemic continues until the time I join the workforce, maybe I would still be as scared and uncertain as I am today. But I think it is okay to feel that way. Accepting these sentiments, instead of brushing them off and pretending that everything is going to be alright, is facing reality. It will help us grow and mature. Because even with these emotions,

there is still hope in my heart.

During my college days, UP has always reminded me to serve the people; to not just be honorable or excellent, but also to be compassionate towards our fellowmen. I know that such conviction also exist in the heart of many Filipinos.

I am now quite excited to meet those people in the “real world” and be with them in the service of building a better tomorrow.(Lyncen M. Fernandez)

Simply graduating from the program was already a big achievement for me. On top of that, I felt very grateful because these would not have been possible without those people who supported me throughout my studies. I

owe it all to them.”How did his family

celebrate his achievement? “My family congratulated me. And since I have already started my review preparations for the upcoming CPA Licensure Exam, that was more than

enough for me.”Looking back at the

five rough and tough years of studying to earn his degree, he pointed that commitment to his goals in life, believing in himself, and the inspiration and motivation of relatives

and friends made him persevere.

“UP trained me to become independent, open-minded, and one who is able to fully grasp the value of time,” he says of his UP education. (Lyncen M. Fernandez)

Darlene Kaye Araneta graduated as magna cum laude for having earned a GWA of 1.437.

Like most graduates that were caught in the midst of

the still raging pandemic, she shared her thoughts on this.

“Graduating in the midst of this pandemic feels inordinately surreal - it’s like going through some sort of a ‘defamiliarization.’ There is joy with the knowledge that you now have your degree, but there is also grief for the collective vulnerabilities, the cancelled plans, the

uncertainties. With the usual reality and timelines disintegrated, it can feel really difficult to establish some sense of security.

I hope that we can all get through this pandemic, and that we continue to demand more and hold everyone accountable - with some more than others.” (Lyncen M. Fernandez)

MENSAHE

MESSAGE

Ricardo P. BabaranChancellor

University of the Philippines VisayasOFFICE OF THE CHANCELLORMiagao, Iloilo

My warmest congratulations to the graduates of 2020!

Your graduation came at a difficult time when the world is experiencing a pandemic that is unparalleled and has affected everyone. COVID 19 denied you the normal experience of a festive celebration on campus with your family and the entire community, but we are cheering on as you receive your diploma. It has denied you from wearing the most coveted Sablay, the applause of your teachers, and the trimmings of a commencement ceremony, including the sunflower.

We will ensure, however, that when this pandemic is over – you will have the option of marching on stage. The austere episode of 2020 should not dissuade you. Let the UP spirit inside you and the banner of honor, excellence, and service be your drive as you get on with your life as a graduate of UP Visayas. More than anything, strive to serve the Filipino people. Do your share in helping the country survive this tumultuous pandemic environment.

We know that your professors and mentors in UP Visayas have honed your competence. The experience you gained was not fully dependent on your classroom experiences but from various activities outside its walls that UP has allowed you to explore and encouraged you to express your freedom. These events have made you more adept in knowing societies’ needs and have molded your competence. UPV is certain that as new alumni of this university, you have what it takes to flourish in any field you chose. I and the rest of the UPV community wish you well.

Padayon!
