CraftingChristmas
…to this special edition of Christmas
Crafting. Inside you’ll find some fantastic
festive projects to help decorate your homefor the holiday season. From a charming
reindeer head for your wall to simple tree
decorations, you’ll find something to get your
teeth into.
I’m particularly fond of our cover stars – the
gingerbread men soaps on p24. They’ll add a
welcome novelty touch to the bathroom but will also make a lovely gift.
Alongside our traditional craft projects we’ve
also included ideas for hunter gatherers.
Use collected driftwood to make a simple
Christmas tree wall decoration, p26, or look
out for moss-covered branches to create a
rustic hanging star, p28.
Enjoy!

DRIFTWOODCHRISTMAS TREE
Use beach finds to create this simple seasonal decoration, designed by Shore Cottage Studio

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHS SHORE COTTAGE STUDIO
W hen you’re
walkingalong ablustery
shore out of season, it’salmost impossible not tocome home with asea-worn stick or a tactilepiece of wood in yourpocket – and thesematerials seem all themore plentiful after a goodstorm. Here at ShoreCottage Studio, on theWirral Peninsula, we have
long grasses on the sandbanks which ensnare andentangle driftwood. So, ifyou know where to look, you can always find one ortwo small pieces, whichare ideal for creatingcoastal Christmas trees. We make them every yearbut try to come up with anew variation each time.Last year we decoratedlarge trees with all thesmall Christmas cards we
received. We love upcyclingand when clearing out ourwardrobes inspirationstruck: driftwoodChristmas trees on belts. When making yours, picka belt to suit your theme– a glittery child’s beltlooks fabulously festive, while a chunky leather beltadds a rustic edge. If youcan’t bear to part with oneof your own, they can bebought for less than apound in charity shops.Using a belt also meansthat you can have a largestatement decorationwhich will roll up for easystorage until next year.
1 If you have a skinny-style or child’s belt, use smaller, thinner driftwood to createa small tree. A wider, chunky belt lends
itself to supporting big pieces and makes a bigtree that could be hung on a door. Lay yourbelt out with the buckle nearest to you (torepresent the pot), start with bigger pieces atthe bottom and get smaller as you go up.
3Use the glue gun to glue on the centre ofthe back of your first piece of driftwoodand quickly press it in to position. Don’t
add too much or the glue will squeeze outfrom behind and spoil the neat finish. Continueuntil all the driftwood has been added. Makesure you use the stand on your glue gun toprotect your work surface from the hot tip.
2Trim any excess length off your belt. Aplain leather belt can simply be cut tolength but a braided one like the one
pictured needs to be cut about an inch longerthan the finished tree. This inch is then foldedover and a blob of hot glue from the glue gunwill secure the braid. Squeeze the folded endtogether until the glue has cooled.
4Decorate with the shells. When addingours we took into account the designrule that odd numbers are more pleasing
to the eye. We also kept our trees minimal bydecorating only every other branch. We finishedthem with a star – the smaller one with a slateand chalk star and the larger with a porcelainstarfish from a charity shop.

LICHEN
STAR Give a rustic, home-spun feel to your home this season
T
his lichen star wouldlook lovely hanging ona wall or from a door.Small ones could be
suspended from atree. They are an incredibly thriftyand easy decoration to assemble.Their creation provides the perfectexcuse to get out for a winter’swalk and gather some inspiringobjects from your local woods.Collect a selection of pretty
windfall branches covered in lichenor moss; try to find ones that arerelatively straight, as this will givemore definition to the final shape.
If you store your lichen star in anold shoebox it will last for years, oryou could just leave it in place inyour house. Mine has been hangingon my kitchen door for severalyears. And when it starts lookingshabby I will remove the wire andpop the star on the compost heap.
MAKING A LICHEN STAR
Cut the branches into six equal lengths. The twigs for this star measured23cm/9in, but you can make them larger or smaller. Arrange thebranches into two equilateral triangles and secure each corner withbrown stub wire. You can then bind each side with hemp cord, fora neater finish. Place one triangle on top of the other and, using hempcord, secure the triangles together at the points where they cross. Hangwith natural twine or hemp cord.

seed heads you have stored fromthe summer and autumn andcollect pine cones and acorns fromyour local wood or park. Hangthese from your Christmas tree or
combine a few to decorate a dooror wall. You can scale up your
design to make larger decorations, but you may need a base ofstronger cardboard than the cerealpacket used here. The newspaperballs will create a curved profile soyour finished decoration will havea fuller appearance and there willbe no gaps between the cones.
3FINISHING THE
BASE
Continue makingand glueing balls untilyou have covered thering. Coat all the ballswith a layer of PVAglue. This will hardento form a base on towhich you will secureyour foraged finds.
1FORMING THE
RING SHAPE
Using a compassdraw a circle 5.5cm/2inin diameter on the
card. Then pencil asmaller circle inside thefirst about 2.5cm/1in indiameter. Do this twicethen cut out the rings.Take a piece of twineand double it over, glueing the two endstogether on the backof one ring, then takethe second ring andglue in place, making acardboard sandwich.
4ATTACHING
THE CONES
Leave the ringto dry for a day orso. Then, using ahot glue gun, attachlarch cones, acorns orpoppy heads to thenewspaper balls.
2PADDING THE
BASE
Tear off piecesof newspaper and rollup into small balls.
Use a dab of the PVAglue to stop the ballsunravelling and thenglue them to thecardboard ring.
