Hiking Trail Fridays

Engage in exercise while exploring the great outdoors to various local hiking trails and parks. This 5 week program will run once a week, with a new trail every week. Start the New Year with a refreshing, healthy hob-by! Veterans Park District is partnering with Proviso Area for Exceptional Children (PAEC) for their After-School Care program. We provide a safe, caring, and active environment. Children are provided with a snack, help with homework along with opportunities to play both inside and out! Transportation home is also being pro-vided. School Day Out This program is structured to accommodate student off days in our local district schools. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy the day off to socialize with peers through group games, activities, and even field trips. So instead of staying home, come join the fun!

VPD’s Special Recreation “On the Road” Series The “On the Road” series is a one day trip that occurs 2-3 times throughout each season. This program promotes community exploration as we discover the bigger world around us. It also encourages independent life skills as we navigate to each destination.

Expectations: Attendees are expected to stay with their group, engage in recreation activities, practice appropriate behavior with staff and peers, toilet with minimal assistance and be able to maintain independently at a 6:1 staff ratio.

Special Olympics Swimming

Population: DD, AUT, MIThe VPD swim team is looking for swimmers who want to compete in Special Olympics. Our program will start in December and continue through February. Swimmers must know at least one stroke and be able to swim one length of the pool unassisted. You will work on skill development and endurance during practice. This is not a “learn to swim” program. Swimming lessons are available through Veterans Park District throughout the year and are listed in this brochure. You must have a current Medical Application on file with Illinois Special Olympics before you start practice. Bring a towel and be ready to swim. Special Olympics Golf Lessons

Population: DD, AUT, MIJoin us on the driving range to learn the basic skills: chipping, putting, the iron shot, etiquette, and more! Illinois PGA “Teacher of the Year” Marty Joyce will be instructing the lessons. This is a Special Olympics training program. In order to compete, you must be at all training dates and testing dates. Testing will not be repeated if you are absent. You must have a S.O. Bring your gym shoes. No outside shoes may be worn on the turf. You may not train or compete in jeans or cut-offs. Bowling shoes are required on the alleys. No outside food may be brought into the bowling alley. If you want a snack/drink, please bring money to purchase something. You must have a current medical application on file with Illinois Special Olympics before you can start training. A minimum of 15 games must be bowled at these practic-es to complete. Outside scores will no longer be accepted. Please be sure you are able to attend enough practices to meet the required 15 game average.
