Thayer County Fair—July 19-23, 2017 Nuckolls County will have rodeos Friday, and Saturday evenings. While Thayer County will the carnival running Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Let’s work hard to make this a great 2017 Fair Season. CELEBRATE NEBRASKA 4-H MONTH IN FEBRUARY 2017! Each year, the University of Nebraska—Lincoln 4-H Program observes Nebraska 4-H Month . We want to hear your 4-H story! Share a short video or photo that shows your 4-H Experience. Videos or photos may be shared through social media using the #NE4H and #TrueLeaders hashtags. Video shared as a #NE4H Video View may also be shared at the Nebraska State Fair and through state 4-H social media networks. Hope to see your story this month during Nebraska 4-H Month. 4-H ONLINE ENROLLMENT Nebraska 4-H introduced the 4-H online enrollment system called “4-H Online”. 4-H members MUST re- enroll online by April 1—paper enroll-ment is no longer an option. The website to enroll is https://ne.4honline.com. You’ll need to have the email and password that you used last year on the system. If you can’t remember your password you can reset the password by contacting the office or asking for a reset code to be sent to your email address. NOTE: only parents/guardians may enroll 4-H members. Each 4-H household will need to set up a profile in which the 4-H youth for the household will be added. Current 4-H members who are not enrolled online by April 1 will no longer be officially enrolled members. Projects may be updated through May 1 by contacting the office. Volunteer Leaders are asked to enroll on the same online site. We would like to have leaders complete the re-enrollment by April 1 but will accept volunteer leaders at anytime during the year. 4-H PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST & PSA CONTEST The Southern Plains Contest will be held on Monday, March 27 at 7 p.m. at the Thayer County 4-H Building. The PSA theme for this year is “4-H Grown”. Watch for more information next month, but to get more infor-mation about the contest guidelines go to: http://4h.unl.edu/regionalpublicspeaking Pre-entry due March 20, 2017

GOVERNOR’S AGRICULTURE EXCELLENCE AWARD The Nebraska 4-H Foundation and the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA) are pleased to again offer the Governor's Agricultural Excellence Awards sponsored by the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA) which recognize 4-H clubs for individual work and community service. Since 1997, twenty-five clubs have been recognized each year. Recognition in the form of $500 checks are issued to the club's treasury to be used as described in the award application. Clubs may use the award dollars for many different programs in-cluding: community workshops or conferences, club trips or tours, community improvement projects, cam-pus visits, fair grounds enhancement, inter-generational programs, and the development of a youth council. While the majority of the clubs choose a project that benefits many others in their community some have chosen to celebrate their success by providing more experiences for club members. Applications are availa-ble on-line at http://ne4hfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/2017-governors-ag-excellence-application-1.pdf The application deadline is March 3, 2017. INNOVATIVE YOUTH CORN CHALLENGE CONTEST. Nebraska Extension and the Nebraska Corn Board are offering the fifth Innovative Youth Corn Challenge contest. This contest, open to 4-H members (age 10 & older as of Jan. 1st) or FFA members (in-school mem-bers), guides participants through all aspects of corn production, as well as agricultural careers related to corn production. As a team, youth will be challenged to implement a production practice different than normal to determine if they increased their yield. Economics and sustainability of the practice will also be considered. Yields, cropping history, and production information will be collected in the Corn Yield Challenge manage-ment summary. Cash prizes and plaques will be given to the first, second, and third place teams. First place will receive $1,000, second place will receive $500, and third place will receive $250. Sustainability, crop scouting and “extra mile” awards will also be given, each worth $200. To participate in 2016, youth must complete and return an entry form by March 15th to the Fillmore County Extension Office in Geneva, NE. Forms can be downloaded at http://cropwatch.unl.edu/Youth/Documents/IYCC/YouthYieldChallengeEntryForm_2017FILLABLE.pdf For more information, contact Brandy VanDeWalle at [email protected], Aaron Nygren at [email protected] or Amy Timmerman at [email protected]. NO NEED TO BE A 4-H
MEMBER TO ATTEND
Dear 4-H Families and Volunteers; Over 22 years ago I accepted what was my “dream job”. I have loved working with so many special families and learning with each of you through the 4-H program. However, my life is going to change on February 15, as I have accepted a position with Southeast Community College as the Hebron Learning Center Coordinator. The position will be part time, as the program is developed, so during this time, I plan to continue working for Ne-braska Extension, and the 4-H program on a part-time basis until the position at SCC becomes full time, which is expecting to be July 1, 2017. This is a position that will create credit and non-credit learning opportunities for res-idents in and around Thayer County. I have enjoyed my time working with the 4-H members, families and volunteers in the Southern Plains Unit and will forever treasure the friendships I have developed. However, last year my position’s stability came into ques-tions because of funding on the state level, and this fall Nebraska Extension announced that there was a budget short fall and a hiring freeze. These issues made me realize that it was in my best interest to pursue other employ-ment opportunities. Which led to me securing the position with Southeast Community College. Words cannot describe the amount of appreciation I felt when so many of you came to support my position at last year’s meet-ings with commissioners and Nebraska Extension Administration. The support for this position will need to con-tinue to insure a replacement is hired either on the state or local level. I will forever treasure the memories I have of working with the youth in the Southern Plains Unit. Memories of dropping fishing poles in the lake; having my golf cart taken at the fair; water slides after fair; surviving the hurri-cane during small animal round robin contest; rained out horse shows; green hair; tasting onion ice cream; catch-ing loose cats, chickens and horses; sitting on the dunking stand for hours; and watching the awe in the eyes of teenagers as they see the United States Capital Building for the first time; are images that will be forever treasured in my heart. I feel honored to have worked with the Southern Plains 4-H program for over 20 years. Please know that I will always be a HUGE supporter of the 4-H program. Thank you for all the GREAT memories and for always making the best better! Sincerely, Crystal K. Fangmeier
