C9 Diesel Engine. The Cat C9 is an 8.8 liter (537 in3) displacement, six-cylinder, in-line configured engine withhydraulically actuated electronic fuelinjection. It uses ACERT™ Technology,a series of Caterpillar engineeredinnovations that provide advancedelectronic control, precision fuel deliveryand refined air management, resultingin outstanding performance and loweremissions.

The Cat C9 with ACERT Technologymeets the U.S. EPA Tier 3 and EuropeanUnion Stage IIIA emissions standards, which dramatically restrict the emissionof nitrogen oxide and other pollutants inan effort to improve worldwide air quality. The C9 rating is 178 net kW (239 net hp)at 1,800 rpm.

Design. The C9 with ACERT Technologyis based on the proven Cat C-9 Tier 2/Stage II engine with thousands currentlyin operation. It offers a compact designwith big, heavy-duty engine features foroutstanding durability, reliability andperformance. The cylinder head featuresa new cross-flow air design with fourvalves per cylinder and updated portgeometry. The improved intake portgeometry provides smoother transitionsand less flow restrictions. The C9 usesmid-support wet cylinder liners, which areeasily removed for service. A two-stephoning process is used for cutting deepgrooves for oil retention.

ADEM™ A4. The ADEM A4 electroniccontroller is the brain of the engine andcontains the engine’s control software. All the sensors are remote-mounted andconnected to the main module.

The main concept behind ACERT is “advanced combustion”. ACERTtechnology begins with ADEM A4.This electronic brain regulates fueldelivery, airflow and other enginefunctions. The controller directs theHEUI injectors to deliver multipleinjections of fuel during the engine’scompression stroke.

The C9 features ADEM A4, the mostadvanced 32-bit Electronic EngineControl available. ADEM A4 offersgreater processing speeds and memorythan ADEM III. It offers a variety offuel maps to optimize ACERT technologyfor better performance and efficiency.

Fuel System. Hydraulically actuatedelectronic fuel injection is a Cat exclusivetechnology and has a proven track record. The HEUI design has been refined andnow supplies multiple injections of fuelduring the engine’s compression stroke. With multiple injection, fuel is introducedto the combustion chamber in a numberof controlled microbursts, rather than allat once, so it precisely regulates thecombustion cycle. The improved HEUIdesign also offers improved combustionand fuel delivery. An added benefit ofthis is better control of engine soundand vibration levels. The HEUI systemcontinues to offer excellent reliabilitybecause it has fewer moving parts thanmechanical unit injection and requiresvery few adjustments, reducingmaintenance costs and increasingmachine availability.

Design. The fuel system design eliminatesexternal high-pressure fuel lines, providingefficient, precise fuel delivery, and timing.

Serviceability. Unit injectors can beserviced individually, without the needto service the whole fuel system.

Turbocharger and Aftercooler. The turbocharger is a wastegate designwith a new titanium compressor wheel. The titanium wheel is better able towithstand the stress and wear of high-speed operation. This new turbocharger iswell-matched to the air-to-air aftercoolerresulting in high power. The exhaustdriven turbocharger packs more air intothe cylinders, while the air-to-airaftercooler cools the pressurized air fromthe turbocharger, making the engineintake air denser. The increased air inthe cylinders results in more power, improved combustion, and reducedexhaust emissions.

Cooling System. Incorporated into asingle-plane cooling unit are the engineradiator, the hydraulic and power trainoil coolers, and the air-to-air aftercooler.Wide fin spacing for “Trash Resistance”and swing-out latched grille for easycleaning are now standard equipment.

Extended Life Design. The forged steelcrankshaft increases strength anddurability. It features induction hardenedjournals and fillets. The camshaft is madeof carburized and heat-treated steel forexcellent durability. The pistons feature anarticulated two-piece design. The forgedsteel crown is stronger than aluminum andallows more flexibility in the ring position.

Starting System. The ADEM™ A4controller controls the electric starter motor and the starter relay. The ADEM A4 prevents fuel from beingsupplied for starting until sufficient oilpressure is present. This prevents wearon the bearings due to operating withoutadequate lubrication.

Engine Installation. The engine isinstalled using rubber mounts to reducethe transfer of engine vibration to theframe and cab, lowering operatorvibration, sound levels, and fatigue.

Rear Engine Location. Rear enginelocation allows excellent forwardvisibility, while serving as a workingcounterweight. Helps reduce radiatorplugging while providing easy serviceaccess to the engine and other majorcomponents.

Shifting. The hydrostatic drive eliminatesthe need for transmission shifting, whichallows the operator to concentrate onworking, maneuvering, and production.

Machine Speed. The ElectronicHydrostatic Control (EHC) automaticallyadjusts machine speed to give theequipment hydraulic system priority, while the hydrostatic system takesadvantage of all remaining engine power.

Electronic Hydrostatic Control (EHC).The EHC maintains engine rpm inoptimum operating range and balancesthe two track drive systems for straighttravel without machine drift.

Caterpillar Monitoring System (CMS).The EHC interfaces with the CMS forsystem diagnostics and calibrations. It isself diagnosing, and fully compatible withElectronic Technician (Cat ET) software. This allows quick and easy calibrationsand troubleshooting.

Pumps and Drive Motors.Variable displacement pumps andvariable displacement drive motors areelectronically controlled by the EHC,offering high efficiency and precise travel. Each track is independently driven by aseparate hydraulic circuit consisting of onevariable displacement pump, connectedby Cat XT™-6 hydraulic hose andcouplings to a variable displacementpiston motor.

Separate Hydraulic Pumps. Separatehydraulic pumps offer easy servicing.

Maneuverability. Independent power isprovided to each track, which providesgreat maneuverability, speed, and sideslope operation. Controlling independentpower and speed for each track allowsthe operator to maintain full power toboth tracks while turning, achieving a “Power Turn”. Power Turns allowincreased productivity when dozing or backfilling. For additionalmaneuverability, the operator can use counter rotation, which allows spot turns in tight locations.

Travel Speeds. Travel speeds areinfinitely variable between zero and topspeed. Two speed modes, “travel mode”and “work mode”, provide two differentspeed ranges to best match machinespeed and torque to the job conditions formaximum productivity. Maximum travelspeed is increased to 10 kph (6.2 mph)when the travel/work mode switch is in the travel position. In addition, switchbetween travel and work positions takeseffect immediately.

6

Hydrostatic DriveThe electronically controlled hydrostatic drive helps provide quick response for shorter cycletimes and increased productivity.

Page 7: Specalog for 973C Track Loader, AEHQ5678-03

Mainframe and Loader Tower. The mainframe and loader tower is asingle, welded fabrication with castingsand forgings incorporated at points ofhigh stress to distribute those stressesover wide areas for a long structural life.

Design. Strong box-section mainframedesign, with continuous, deep-penetrationwelds resist twisting loads to protectcomponents from excessive wear ordamage without adding extra weight tothe machine. The frame rails consist oftwo box sections, which are joined at therear by a box-section cross member.Mounting points for the final drives, pivot shafts, and operator’s platform areintegrated into each mainframe side rail.

Four-Plate Loader Tower. The four-plateloader tower is integral with the basicmainframe. The loader tower distributesforces evenly from the lift arms to themainframe, which eliminates twistingfor maximum structural durability. The loader tower provides solidmounting points for lift arms, liftcylinders, and Z-Bar tilt cylinders.

Castings. Steel castings (shown in red) areused in areas of high stress concentration.Large radius curves dissipate stresses thatcould cause fatigue and cracking.

Steel Frame. Fatigue resistant steel framesections along with castings provideflexibility, durability and excellentresistance to impact loads.

Durability. Structures are designed toprovide durability and extended servicelife to support multiple rebuilds.

Straddle Mounting. Straddle mountingsupports all lift arm pivot points on bothends of the pin eliminating twisting forcesand enhancing structural durability.

Z-Bar Linkage. Breakout force isexceptionally high due to the mechanicaladvantage of Z-bar linkage design, andhydraulic pressure applied to the headend of the tilt cylinders. Using dual tiltcylinders and linkage provides theoperator a better view of the work area, bucket, and cutting edge.

Sealed Loader Linkage. The 973C linkagehas fewer grease points compared to otherlinkage designs because many pin jointsare sealed to keep dirt out. Fewer greasepoints and sealed pins means lessdowntime for maintenance allowingmore working hours between servicing.

Simultaneous Lift and Dump.Simultaneous lift and dump for fast truckloading and smooth grading, and theability to meter material from bucket.

Lift Kickout. Adjustable automatic liftkickout and bucket positioner allow theoperator to concentrate on positioningthe machine rather than the bucket. This results in greater productivity.

Lift Arms. The two arms are welded intoa single unit, using a weld-fabricatedcross-tube. The fabricated cross-tubeand tilt lever, use forgings at high stresspoints to spread the loads for long life.

10

StructureThe box-section mainframe is designed to handle heavy loads, while the dual Z-Bar linkagemaximizes breakout force, while distributing stress loads to the mainframe.

Undercarriage. The oscillating track rollerframe design decreases ground inducedimpact loads to the machine, increasesmachine stability on rough terrain, andprovides a smoother, more comfortableride for the operator.

Pivot Shaft. Steel pivot shafts attach therear ends of the track roller frames to theloader mainframe and carry most of theweight. The pivot shafts transfer groundinduced shock loads from the track rollerframes to the loader mainframe ratherthan through the final drives. The resultis longer final drive life.

Equalizer Bar. The equalizer bar is pinnedin its center to the machine mainframeand at the ends to each track roller frame. This allows the forward ends of the trackroller frames to oscillate, or movevertically, to keep more track on theground in uneven underfoot conditions. The equalizer bar also provides a morestable work platform for the operator, who will be comfortable working atfaster speeds for increased productivity.

Track Roller Frame. The track rollerframes are a welded, box section design, similar to the box section design of themainframe and loader tower, whichprovides strength and resistance tobending without adding extra weight.

Track and Carrier Rollers. Seven trackrollers spread the machine weight overa larger area. This improves stability andprovides a more comfortable ride for theoperator. Two upper carrier rollers on eachside mount to the machine mainframe. This mounting arrangement helps resistmud packing of the undercarriage.

Track Adjuster. The track adjuster andmechanical recoil system uses a largerecoil spring and grease filled adjustmentcylinder, which allows the idler to moveforward and back to maintain proper tracktension as it absorbs undercarriageshock loads.

Swing-Link Idler. Permits horizontal idlermovement, absorbing shock loads andmaintaining proper track tension, whileeliminating the need for shims and wearstrips. The removal of wear stripseliminates a point of service andmaintenance. Cat idlers providesuperior structural support.

Sealed and Lubricated Track. Sealed andlubricated track keeps maintenance costsdown by reducing pin and internal bushingwear, which can extend the life of thetrack and the undercarriage components.Lubricating the pin helps reducecomponent friction for less track noiseand greater power train efficiency.

12

Keeps more track on the ground for maximum traction and stability. Several shoe optionsprovide best match to job conditions.
