SPEARNETWORK-ENABLED PRECISION SURFACE ATTACK

The next generation air-launched surface attackweapon SPEAR is MBDA’s response to a componentof the UK’s Selective Precision Effects At Range air-launched requirement.

Product key features

Recent conflicts have demonstrated the need for precision strikeweapons that can operate in all conditions, against severecountermeasures and attack moving and manoeuvring targets.Powered by a turbojet engine, SPEAR has the beyond horizonreach to ensure that the aircraft remains safely away from hostileair defence units.

Operational advantages

• SPEAR will engage a wide range of target types bothon land and at seaSPEAR is fitted with latest generation multi-mode sensorseeker providing increased selectivity in complex scenarios.SPEAR is effective against air defence units, ballistic missilelaunchers, hardened structures, fast moving and manoeuvringvehicles, main battle tanks, armoured personnel carriers andnaval vessels.

• SPEAR provides enhanced platform andweapon survivabilitySPEAR is equipped with a precision effects warhead and willallow the warfighter to reduce the numbers of differentweapons within inventory while extending the operator’s air-to-ground capability far beyond the horizon. SPEAR willprovide high aircraft survivability with a low collateral damage.

• SPEAR provides operational flexibility Powered by a turbojet engine, SPEAR has the beyondhorizon reach to ensure that the aircraft remains safely awayfrom hostile air defence units.

Technical characteristics/specifications

Weight: < 100kgLength: < 2mDiameter: 180mmGuidance: Multi-mode seeker & INS/GPSWarhead: Multi-effect

Seeker

• Multi-mode seeker providing increased selectivity incomplex scenarios.

Navigation and guidance

• Robust Inertial Navigation, with GPS throughout theoperating envelope.

Network enabled

• Two-way data link allows in-flight updates, retargeting andabort functions. SPEAR can be used in both Fire-and-Forgetand semi-active laser designation modes as well as fullynetwork enabled.

Warhead

• Multi-effect warhead with multiple fusing options allowingtuneable effects to target thereby enhancing lethality whileminimising collateral risk.

Propulsion

• Turbojet propulsion for high subsonic speed and long reachproviding operational flexibility and increased weapon andplatform survivability.
