Actions and Algorithms for Medical Emergencies: How to Save a Life (Including Your Own)

There are more medically compromised patients coming to our offices than ever before. Acquire “up to the minute” actions for dealing with a medical emergency while challenging preconceived or outdated ideas. Daniel Pompa, DDS - Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, ADA Consultant and Seminar Series Speaker - discusses the prevention, preparation, recognition and management of medical emergencies. Delivered in an interactive, high energy, multi-media presentation frequently described by attendees as “highly informative,” “engaging,” and “exceptional.” A step-by-step medical approach using basic physical diagnostic methods is reviewed, giving the attendee a clear understanding of these medical findings.

We will explore the “Conversational History” and how it will uncover medical issues not revealed by the standard health history form. Additionally, the participant will learn simple, non-invasive critical tests that can reduce overall risks. We clearly delineate indications for emergency drug use and proper dosages, as well as demonstrate how to assemble and maintain an ideal emergency drug kit. The newest techniques for drug administration will be shown for participants to hone their skills utilizing simulation models and real drugs. Dr. Pompa may incorporate live demonstrations to enhance the learning experience depending on the venue format.

Attendees will receive and review color-coded instructional cards depicting the most common life-threatening situations with algorithms providing an easy to follow action plan for both dentist and team members. We will also review the legal and moral obligations that are presented during a medical crisis.

To Pull or Not to Pull: Periapical Surgery vs. Implant Surgery

Advancements in delivering periapical surgery have resulted in success rates that can be equivalent to implant replacement when certain guidelines are adhered to. Periapical surgery as an adjunct to endodontic treatment is a proven approach. With the introduction of new surgical techniques and a systematic method to the diagnosis and treatment of compromised teeth, the clinician should be able to more accurately determine the long term prognosis for these treatment options.

Evaluate treatment options with an evidence-based approach when a tooth is ailing or failing. This course will describe the indications and contraindications for performing or referring a patient for apical surgery. With a specific 7 step workup, including a correct history, radiographic and clinical evaluation, the decision to perform an apicoectomy will be weighed against further evaluation, a re-treatment option, or extraction and replacement with an implant (immediate or delayed). As a result, a decision is more accurately made as to whether an implant or a fixed bridge (fixed partial prosthesis), a removable prosthesis (fixed or transitional temporary prosthesis), or other options would be the final treatment plan discussed with the patient.

What alternative treatment options should be consideredwhen a restorative and/or endodontic failure occurs?

Learning Objectives:

Multiple Lecture Formats: Full or Partial Day; Evening

Suggested Attendee: General Practitioner & Dental Specialists

• Learn the radiographic technique to use when evaluating a tooth for a fracture • List the 7 step work-up, consisting of procedures and tests that should be used

when performing or referring a patient for an apicoectomy • Understand the principles of guided tissue regeneration, and know the indications

and contraindications for its use • Recognize how the location of a sinus tract can be a key critical diagnostic

indicator for the final prognosis • Identify the signs to differentiate between an Endo/Perio vs. Perio/Endo lesions

and understand the difference as it relates to the final prognosis

The Single Tooth Implant: The Ultimate Esthetic Challenge

The past few years have brought a paradigm shift, as guidelines for the surgical and restorative approach have changed dramatically. Fine tune your workup to create a result that is as close to a natural replacement as possible. We will focus on the latest advances incorporating evidence-based data. Participants will review a unique sequential treatment planning approach which can result in successful outcomes.

Emphasis will be given to the use of 3D treatment planning as it relates to the diagnostic workup and the use of computer guided surgery.* Multiple provisional options and/or interim Hawley prosthesis appliances will be reviewed to attain ideal esthetic results. Long term follow-up will be shown as it relates to these approaches.

The single tooth implant may be one of the most difficult challenges dentists face, with possible unforeseen outcomes.

Honors & Achievements

“It’s not often that you get to use ‘light hearted’ and ‘dental office

emergencies’ in the same sentence, but Dr. Pompa was

able to carry it off. Far exceeding the objectives of this

course, Dr. Pompa is an outstanding speaker who offered

interesting, not-commonly known facts. He is one of the

best speakers we’ve had.”

“Yesterday I had a Dental Assistant who went into a

severe allergic reaction with her throat closing. I didn’t panic and kept cool knowing I had taken

your course in Emergencies and was capable of dealing with it. I

activated the Emergency Rescue system you taught and it

went by the book. Afterwards her Physician mentioned to her

that I had saved her life.”

Testimonials

“After attending Dr. Pompa’s course on Medical Emergencies I came back feeling

considerably more confident to handle almost anything. Dr. Pompa was able to

clearly demonstrate what the medical emergency diagnosis was through the

patient’s signs and symptoms, and what the treatment should be through the use of movie scenes and popular music. We

were also instructed on how to set up our own Emergency Kits using color coding. This should be a required course for all

dentists, and their staff, annually.”

Rosanne Puoplo-Carter, DDSGlen Head, NY

“This seminar is a fast paced, interactive, hands-on presentation. The live demonstrations add to the realism of the emergency scenarios. The correlation of the music, video portrayals, and

entertaining material that Dr. Pompa gives results in a memorable experience, giving useful information you will never forget.

A must see for your staff as well.”

Robert Graziano, DDS
