Informative Speech

This speech is designed for you to begin to do more professional-style public presentations. Your topic should be related to black history. You should pick a topic that is more academic in nature than your demonstration speech.

You will have between 6-8 minutes for your speech. You should include at least six academic sources in your speech. These should be cited according to MLA format on your outline and shared with us orally (source and date) during your presentation. For your visual aid we will all be using a 3-5 slide PowerPoint presentation. You should include a title page with your PowerPoint to avoid showing your first slide as you start your speech.

Each student will be assigned to give their speech on Wed 1/30 (group A), Wednesday 1/31 (group B). You will know in class which group you are in. Since we have limited time to give speeches if you miss your day there will be no make-ups unless you are granted an exception per Communication Department Policy. If you have any questions about your assigned day please send me an email to [email protected] asap.

You can use up to 3 3x5 note cards during your presentation – no outlines can be brought up to the front of the class. A full and complete outline will be due the day of your speech.

This is the first major speech in our class and is worth 300 total points as explained on the rubric. This speech is roughly 1/3 of your grade in the class so please ensure you are prepared to excel. Recap

Informative 6-8 min 6-8 Required 3-3x5 cards Required (1) 300 This speech adheres to all of the characteristics we’ve discussed thus far regarding informative speaking. A critical factor in this speech is organization. The main points should be arranged in different ways such as topical, spatial etc. Demonstration speeches are not allowable for meeting this requirement. Your topic for the informative speech should be related to black history. There is a chance to compete in the Black History Month speech contest. Be imaginative and creative in developing your speech. Remember to be objective rather than persuasive. As one of the two major speech assignments in the course, rigor and critical thinking are essential for this assignment. Research must be drawn from credible and/or scholarly publications (Mt. SAC library databases).
