From the Principal’s desk…..

It is hard to believe that June is here already. There is an excitement

in the air that is contagious as the weather begins to feel like summer! It

has been a year of learning, growing and reflecting not only for students

but for staff as well. The students are incredible as well as the faculty.

Thank you for all of the support provided to us over this past year.

Have a safe and restful summer and we will see you again in September!

SRC News…

The students of KCI had the opportunity to listen to speeches from five of their classmates

who expressed serious interest to run for the position of School President. All students attend-

ed an assembly, listened, asked questions and then had the opportunity to vote.

The 5 candidates who applied to run for the position were: Kaylie Bowes, Jaelyn Dietz,

Kaytlyn Placatka, and Lexie Tomochko. Each candidate went through an intense interview

session with their advisors. Discussions of the importance of their position were addressed as

well as their responsibilities as a leader. All 5 students showed strengths in many areas.

Congratulations!

Kaylie Bowes, Kaytlyn Placatka and Lexie Tomochko will be executive members. Positions

will be finalized at the end of the school year.

A great big Thank you to Taylor Hudye and Kaytlyn Placatka for their hard work as President

and Vice President. We wish Taylor all the best as she continues her education in Calgary.

Kaytlyn will be returning for her last year here at KCI.

Junior Badminton 2014 Wrap-up

Our badminton season was short but filled with lots of travelling and gameplay. On

May 7th 2014, KCI sent 5 teams to district badminton competitions in Yorkton. In

boys doubles, Austin Thomas & Michael Chan and Jaraden Bryksa & Denton Dietz,

girls doubles was represented by Allison Thomsen & Regan Nichol, our lone boys sin-

gle team was Zac MacGriskin and mixed doubles was represented by Taryn Broda &

Breanna Bland. These teams advanced through two very tough days of pre-district

competition which saw them play through all schools in the northern half of the dis-

trict.

At the end of the day, KCI’s junior badminton team built on their success from last

year with three teams bringing home district medals. Austin Thomas & Michael

Chan, who never lost a single game during the regular season, kept to their form at

districts – never losing a game and demonstrating superb sportsmanship – and bring-

ing home the district gold medal.

Taryn Broda & Breanna Bland, who began playing early in the season, played ex-

tremely well during the day, including a dramatic third-set win in the semi-finals,

played their best badminton all season in the final – remembering to laugh when

they needed it most - and brought home another district gold medal to KCI.

Allison Thomsen & Regan Nichol, motivated on by their stinging defeat from last

year, showed dominant form in the round robin and semi-final portion of gameplay –

perhaps remembering a ‘souvenir’ from last year’s pre-districts – and earned their

way into the gold medal game. Facing a team they had played before, they gave it

their all, but ended up just a little bit short – settling for district silver in the girls

doubles category.

Our other teams are the day suffered heartbreaking defeats. Jaraden Bryksa & Den-

ton Dietz, who had only played together for two days before pre-districts, lost their

final round robin game in three sets against Invermay, setting them up to face Aus-

tin & Michael. The boys eventually lost that game, and lost to Invermay once more

during the bronze medal game – ending their season and finishing 4th in the district.



Zac MacGriskin, who has played his heart out all season long in boys singles, start-

ed the day in a dominant fashion – winning an amazing set after being down by 9

points. Boys singles had been the toughest pool all season long, and Zac unfortu-

nately lost the next two round robin games, preventing him from advancing to the

quarter-finals.

“Overall we had a fantastic season – our teams demonstrated great skill and

sportsmanship throughout the entire season, and the fact that we sent five teams

to districts and brought three medals home is proof of the commitment of my

team and players,” said Lambert. “I hope that all players continue to practice

and further develop their skill, and I hope to see them playing again next year.”



This season was a very successful one for the KCI track and field team. Practices began

just after the Easter Break and even though Easter was late this year, the late winter forced the

team inside for practice for a few weeks. In total, 49 Spartans from grade 5-12 competed in

Kamsack for Pre-district competition on Wednesday May 21. This was the first time in several

years that KCI played host to the event. Though the grounds were a little wet, the competition

went ahead smoothly, the weather was beautiful, and our Spartans did very well. 36 of those

49 athletes advanced to the District Championship in Yorkton on May 27 and 28. From those

36, 15 received at least one medal at districts for a top 3 finish. Denton Dietz, Brooke Hauser-

mann and Hannah Pennell were the best junior athletes as Denton won gold in all 4 events he

competed in (100m, high jump, long jump, triple jump), Brooke won gold in the 200m and

400m, while placing 4th in long and triple jump, and Hannah had one of each medal (Gold in

400m, silver in 200m, and bronze in 800m). Other junior medal winners were Sadie McGris-

kin (silver 1500m), Koryssa Woloshyn (bronze 200m), and Ali Placatka (bronze 3000m).

Last year, 3 Spartans advanced to the Provincial Track and Field Meet in Moose Jaw.

This year we doubled (and then some) that number to 7! Jayden Chutskoff was the best of the

KCI athletes, finishing 7th in the province in Junior Boys 100m hurdles and 10th in 800m with

a personal best run. He also competed in the 400m. Colin Tulloch jumped 4.98m in midget

boys long jump, missing the top 8 by .04m. He also ran the 200m. Other athletes in Moose

Jaw were Regan Nichol and Cassidy Aker in 80m hurdles, Kyle Morgan in 100m hurdles and

triple jump, Lexie Tomochko in high jump, and Kaytlyn Placatka in the 3000m. Next year the

Provincial Meet will be held right here in Good Spirit School Division at Century Field in

Yorkton!

Mr. Kitchen would like to say a big thank you to all coaches and staff that played a part

in this year’s track and field season – Mrs. Kitchen, Ms. Nichol, Ms. Verigin, Ms. Deveau, Mr.

Stanko, Ms. Bishop, Ms. Tensen, and Mr. McGriskin. A big thank you also to Mr. and Mrs.

Chutskoff, Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Tomochko who drove and helped chaperone our provincial

athletes this year! Thank you to Mrs. Kazakoff and Mr. Musqua for running the canteen on the

21st.

Our Spartan Family!

Our Spartan Family has grown quickly this year. We welcome Ms. J. Pennell’s new

little girl, Jersey. Mr. and Mrs. Gareau’s new little boy, Xander and are awaiting ar-

rivals from Mrs. Holodniuk in June and Mrs. Rathgeber in July.

In the shop most students are beginning final projects and working on items as they come in.

The grade tens will be looking for oil changes to do. Also many students are working on inter-

esting laith projects. Sure has been a lot of fun.

The warm weather is here (sometimes) and we are getting outdoors as much as possible. The

students have been engaging in activities such as baseball, ultimate Frisbee, and team handball

recently. Track and field took over the gymnasium and the fields outdoors as the students prac-

tice intensely for their competitions.



Mrs. Eisner (Mr. Dietz) 5A

We have a new class president in 5A and two new vice presidents. Aidan Broda is the 5A presi-

dent! Tanner Cote and Anastasia Schwartz are the new vice presidents! We are learning about

governments in social studies so we have made a government in our classroom, Phys. Ed. is

our favourite subject and we are learning to play softball. Our new teacher, Mrs. Eisner, is try-

ing to teach us to not work so hard so that we can have more fun. She is teaching us silly songs

and we learn tongue twisters every day! Thanks to everyone who voted for me because now I

have to write the paragraph for the newsletter!!!

In Mathematics 9 we have been finishing our last outcome in the Shape and Space area.

A lot of geometry as well as some problem solving and mental math has been accomplished.

MFPC 10 students have been working on outcomes associated with graphing. Currently we

are finishing off an outcome on solving systems of linear equations.

Both grade 9 and 10 students will be gearing up for their final exams in late June. Reviewing

past concepts will be key to finishing off the year with a solid exam!

The year is quickly approaching to the end. Woohoo!! Grade 9’s are busy handing in fi-

nal work and projects.

The grade 9 trip was Saturday, June 14th, 2014 in Regina. Laser tag and the Rider Game

was the agenda. Thank you to our advisors: Mr.G.Musqua, Ms.L.Villeneuve, Mr.B.Thomsen,

and Mr.D.Andrusiak.

Parents please be advised that grade 9’s will be writing finals the last week and a half in

June. Subjects include: E.L.A., Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Students need to be studying and preparing. Please encourage your child to prepare.

It has been a great year and I would like to personally wish all my grade 9’s a wonderful

summer and all the best in grade 10.

In 7b, we have been getting to know our new teacher, Ms. Deveau. In ELA, she has

been teaching us about a new subject: comedy. We are learning how to write persuasively and

which words we should use when we are trying to be persuasive. We started by writing a per-

suasive letter convincing our parents to let us attend a summer event of our choice.

In Science and Social Studies, we are creating a website on environmental issues. We also

have to create a poster and write our own dramatic skit with our groups. In math we are finish-

ing up our unit on circles. We have been calculating area, circumference, diameter and radius.

For music we have been working on an anthem project. In small groups we have to research a

specific country's anthem. We are finishing up our baseball unit in Physical Education and

moving onto other sports. In health we are learning about AIDS and HIV.

In Art, we are working on our final projects. We are able to choose our favorite medium from

everything we have learned this year. Our projects must relate to our conceptual focus for the

year: "Place". We are working on everything from paper mache sculptures to abstract/

landscape paintings and drawings. For career education we are finishing our career portfolios

to reflect on our qualities. In band we are working on perfecting our songs as the band concert

is coming up on June 10th! Lastly, we are excited for our Winnipeg trip on June 12-14!

In the last few months 5B have been learning lots! In ELA

we’ve been learning about writing paragraphs and letters! Also,

we’ve been doing All The RightType. In math we’ve been

learning about geometry, translations, and measurement. In

health we’ve been learning about domestic violence and doing a

poster project about it. In science we are learning about forces and simple machines. Finally

in social studies, we are learning about sustaining our environment for the future. At the end

of June we are going to a field trip to Made Lake Bible Camp where we are going rock climb-

ing, canoeing, and many more activities! Have a good summer!

KCI Lawn Concert

Tuesday, June 10 at 7pm

Kamsack Hospital Grounds

Please bring a lawn chair or a blanket. In case of rain, the concert will be held indoors at the KCI gym.

Pie, ice cream, juice and coffee will be served for 5$. We hope you can join us!

A group of about 12 new knitters have been hard at work learning how to make a slip

knot, cast on stitches, knit a row, cast off and even purl. They have completed their first

swatch and a blanket square. They have begun to work on a third project of their choice.

The group meets once a week and accepts donations of yarn, needles and other notions.

Please contact KCI if you have any supplies you would like to contribute.

After a brief camping stop-over at Anglin Lake's Anderson Point Campground north of

Prince Albert on Friday evening, KCI's Spartans Voyageurs (we picked this name on the trip)

headed to Devil Lake just past Otter Rapids Bridge north of Missinippe for a three-night wil-

derness canoe trip on Saskatchewan's magnificent Churchill River.

There was a significant south wind, so we had to use our canoe skills right away paddling

along the north shore of Devil Lake to Little Devil Rapids portage. Soup was on the menu for

the 700-metre portage as the wet spring left holes of water and mud at times up to our

knees. As it was our first day, the barrels were full of provisions for our whole trip, so consid-

erable energy had to be spent, many of the group made four trips. Our plan to camp between

the rapids was foiled, so we proceeded to do another 900-metre portage around Great Devil

Rapids, with the portage trail having similar conditions. Glad we were when we got to our

awesome campsite on the eastern end of Hayman Lake just upstream from Donaldson Chan-

nel. Tyler Chernoff and Jayden Chutskoff won Mr. Thomas' group's secret paddling competi-

tion.

After such a taxing first day, we chose to have a leisurely day two on Sunday, with lots

of time for fishing and free time. Students were able to sleep in for the first time on our

trips. We planned to spend two nights at this campsite, which was a good innovation. We

paddled to the northern end of the lake to Clark Falls, had lunch on a small island, then pad-

dled back to our campsite. Mrs. Hiltz' group hosted a fishing derby with Jake Broda winning

the prize for smallest fish, Mr. Morgan for the largest fish, & Mr. Thomas for the most fish.

On Monday morning we broke camp for Sluice Falls portage. We saw another group of

students just ahead of us (we learned they were from Meadow Lake), so we worked on white-

water canoeing skills -hanging draws & sweeps and cross-bow draws & reverse sweeps- until

the portage was free. We then paddled down stream through rapids: Coke stop, North Chan-

nel, & Dieter's Rapids. Our heart rates spiked, but we had a blast! We camped on Barker Is-

land on Barker Lake. Mr. Morgan also had a fishing derby, with Justin Morgan, Jake Broda,

& Mrs. Thomsen winning prizes.

Tuesday morning we reluctantly headed back. We had a 125-metre portage around Murray

Falls & then got to Devil Lake campground.

We say good-bye this year to nine grade 12s who have formed the core of our group

since its inception. It has been wonderful to see the leadership, initiative, and camaraderie of

all of these awesome young women and men: Mark Nahnybida, Justin Morgan, Sophia Thom-

as, Mikhail Chutskoff, Taylor Hudye, & Mackenzie Binkley were three-year Voyageurs; Tyler

Chernoff, Jake Broda, & Natasha Hausermann were two-year Voyageurs. We wish them

many future wilderness canoe trips.

K.C.I. SADD

The KCI SADD Chapter had an amazing year!!!

We had 2 students, Mackenzie Binkley and Hanna Wosminity who were chosen to be on the

SGI: SADD National team.

The students applied for an SGI grant of $500 and received it to go towards a SADD sign to

be erected along the highway coming into town

SADD students showed a video to the student body on the dangers of texting while driving.

In November and December the SADD students went to some Senior Flyers Hockey Games

and handed out awareness ribbons reminding people not to drink and drive.

The KCI Art students helped decorate bags for the Liquor Store. The bags each had a re-

minder to not drink and drive over the holiday season. We also had a contest for the most

creative bags.

In March we held “Hockey Night in Kamsack” which was the biggest community/ school

event ever! We raised close to $1000 and had overwhelming support from the community.

The Kamsack RCMP agreed to do a road-side check stop with our SADD Chapter. Thank

you to all the RCMP members for helping us bring awareness to the community! It was a

very fun night!

In May, as the long weekend approached, the students wanted to draw awareness to our

group and remind all students to be safe as the summer months approached.

We had announcements over the intercom reminding students to find safe rides home

Cheyenne Munroe won the dirty vehicle competition,

S/Sgt Greg Nichols, Constable Boxall, Mrs. Shabatoski and Mrs. Forsythe talked to the

grade 12 class to remind them to be extra careful as they head off into their final stretch of

school and summer

SADD Members provided statistics of the dangers of drinking and driving (over the inter-

com)

Lexi Schwartz, Malaysia Brass, Hanna Wosminity, Mackenzie Binkley and Taylor Hudye

attended the SADD National Conference in Regina!

Carol Belley from the Edge Business Solutions created a beautiful sign for SADD. . Mike

McGriskin will be erecting the sign in the upcoming months. Watch!

And to end our successful and fun year Redline Chrysler donated all the proceeds from their

Grand Opening BBQ to the KCI Chapter. They called us to say that SADD is a very im-

portant group in the community and they fully support all of our efforts. Thank you Red-

line and the community for supporting their BBQ!!!

Mrs. Shabatoski and Mrs. Rathgeber would like to thank the SADD students for being inno-

vative, creative, and persistent as we successfully brought awareness to the dangers of

drinking and driving and awareness to always plan a safe ride home!
