letter froM our PreSiDent

It is my pleasure to share with you the second edition of the Spartan Sentinel, a magazine for alumni, parents, and friends of DePaul Catholic High School. Contained within are student success stories, alumni news and profiles, highlights and accomplishments both in the classroom, on stage and on the athletic field, and information regarding the continued growth of this excellent school.

As we entered our 60th year, it is my honor and privilege to continue the legacy of faith-filled service and academic excellence that is at the heart of DePaul Catholic High School. Leading the way as Northern New Jersey’s preeminent Catholic co-ed college preparatory school, DePaul Catholic continues to distinguish itself via the success of its alumni and current students. As we complete our strategic planning process, which will serve as our guide for future growth and development, I am confident the possibilities are limitless thanks to our supportive Board of Trustees, talented and dedicated faculty, committed parents and inspirational students.

Regardless of your affiliation to DePaul Catholic, each of us is united by a common bond – we are members of the

Spartan Family. The 2014-2015 school year witnessed the installation of a new school-wide security system, the addition of a new Music practice space, and the relocation of the admission and advancement suite. As with the year prior, these enhancements benefit our current Spartans, providing them a safe and academic-rich school environment. Scholarship, faith and community, the pillars of a DePaul education, are modeled daily in the actions of our dedicated faculty and students.

As you read the following pages, remember your time with your DePaul family. Consider a memory that still generates an immediate smile. Perhaps it was your first Mass or a championship victory. Hopefully it includes a shared connection with an adult, teacher or coach, a role model who had a positive impact on your life. Finally, I am nearly positive your memory will contain a classmate or two, individuals with whom you likely created lifelong memories.

As I reflect, my mind is filled with lasting images of Spartans, people of great courage and self-discipline, actively pursuing scholarship, faith and community. Images of warm smiles in the morning, jubilation after success, and a deep sigh released at graduation for a job well-done. I invite each Spartan to return to Alps Road for a visit or attend a class reunion. While the bricks and mortar may have changed, DePaul Catholic’s core foundation remains steadfast. I wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2016. I look forward to our paths crossing at one of our many upcoming events or school programs.

Meet Christine Mcgovern (’90), Dean of StudentsMrs. McGovern returns to her alma mater after earning a B.A. in Psychology from Marist College, a M.Ed. in Counseling from William Paterson and a M.A.E. in School Administration from Seton Hall University. She recently took a few minutes to reflect on her first semester in her new role at DePaul Catholic.

how long have you been in the education profession?I have been an educator for more than 20 years – or most of my adult professional life!

What is your background?After launching my career teaching special education at a private high school for students with special needs, I pursued a position with a foundation at a children’s hospital. While planning special events and working with donors was fulfilling, I did miss all that comes along with being immersed in an educational setting. I left the hospital to become a counselor and have been doing that ever since.

at what schools have you been affiliated in the past?Community High School in Teaneck, N.J. was my first teaching position. I also worked at Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale, N.J., and for the past 7 years, I was at Immaculate Heart Academy in Washington Township, N.J.

What are your ties to DePaul Catholic high School?Not only did I graduate from DePaul in 1990, my two younger brothers followed soon after.

What are your goals for this year?My priority is work with and really get to know all of the students here at DePaul Catholic. In addition, I am excited to get reacquainted with the traditions – old and new – at my alma mater.

Moral Character: “Is It Still Cheating if I Don’t Get Caught?” Prompts Ethical and Intellectual Discussions throughout DePaul Catholic

This past summer’s school-wide reading assignment – “Is It Still Cheating if I Don’t Get Caught” by Bruce Weinstein – has been the catalyst for many spirited discussions this fall at DePaul Catholic. Read by students and the entire faculty, the book has been the foundation for engaging, deep discussions on issues such as plagiarism, respect for one’s peers and faculty and applying honesty to all situations.

“The intellectual and ethical exchange of ideas that have been infused throughout the curriculum and department areas has exceeded our expectations,” said Ken Jennings, Principal. “It has brought issues of ethical importance to the forefront and help our students relate it to not only the world in which they live today, but to their future endeavors in college, business and beyond.”

DePaul faculty lead by example as lifelong learnersMembers of the DePaul Catholic faculty “talk the talk” and “walk the walk” when it comes to being lifelong learners. This past summer, Patty Bullman and Bethany Duane-Dacles of the Theology and Social Studies departments, respectively, participated in unique invitation-only opportunities for leading educators.

Both Mrs. Bullman and Mrs. Dacles attended the “One-Way Ticket: Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series and Other Works,” held at the Museum of Modern Art for select Facing History teachers. The reception and private tour included previewing Lawrence’s landmark 1941 painting series about the mass movement of African-Americans from the rural South to the urban North. “The entire collection has not been together in over 20 years, so it was a unique opportunity to view these artistic works at one time,” said Mrs. Bullman.

Mrs. Dacles also participated in the National Bearing Witness Summer Institute, a week-long professional development seminar in Washington, DC, for Catholic educators. The program focused on incorporating lessons on Anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, Genocide and contemporary issues into the Catholic school curriculum. Sponsors included the Anti-Defamation League, U.S. Holocaust Museum, National Catholic Education Association, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Georgetown University, and the Israeli and German Embassies, among others.

“The program was critical in helping to develop curriculum for the Social Studies Department’s newest courses – World Genocide, African History and Asian History,” said Mrs. Dacles, who is the department chairperson.

freshman fun Day

Six new honor Societies added to advance Student achievement

Members of the Class of 2019 kicked off the school year with the Annual Freshman Field Day, which took place at Alumni Field. Held each year to promote unity, communication and class spirit, the day’s events focus on activities that encourage teamwork and communication.

More than 60 students were recently commended by Principal Ken Jennings for achieving Principal’s Honors, First Honors and Second Honors for the final quarter of the 2014 – 2015 academic year as well as cumulative honors for all four quarters. “Each of these students demonstrate discipline and determination while pursuing their personal and academic best,” said Mr. Jennings. “We congratulate them on their latest achievements and applaud them as they continue on their impressive academic path.”

Giving credit where credit is due – particularly in the classroom – is an important component of the DePaul Catholic educational experience. The National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society have paved the

way for the addition of six new honor societies during the 2015 – 2016 academic year. These include: • Mu Alpha Theta • National Science Honor Society

• International Thespian Society • History Honor Society • St. Vincent DePaul Honor Society • National Art Honor Society

s c h o l a r s h i pDePaul Catholic Drama Club Debuts “the Best Christmas Pageant ever”

A group of students, led by faculty members that included DePaul Chaplain Fr. Mike Lee, traveled to Philadelphia for the Papal Visit and the Vatican-sponsored World Meeting of Families. The Holy Father’s first trip to the United States touched millions of devout followers in different ways. For those unable to attend events in New York City and Philadelphia, DePaul Catholic’s 1:1 laptop program, media-rich classrooms and technology in the Information Commons offered students and faculty members multiple options to follow the Papal visit to the United States. The following are some thoughts from DP students who participated in the Philadelphia trip:

“Not everyone has the chance to see a Pope up close and experience a

papal mass. Seeing Pope Francis in Philadelphia was a once-in-a lifetime opportunity. I was overwhelmed with emotion when I realized that the leader of the Catholic Church was present in front of me. I will forever remember it and its memory is one I will share for the rest of my life.” ~ Oliver Alvarado

The Drama Club revisited the true meaning of Christmas through the antics of the Herdman children, “the worst kids in the history of the world.” As if tormenting and bullying children were not enough, the Herdmans heard about the possibility of free food and bully their way into taking over this year’s main Christmas pageant roles. During the course of the performance, the audience witnessed how the Herdmans reacted to hearing the Christmas nativity story for the first time – and their interpretations for the pageant (hint: the Wise Men are a bunch of “dirty spies”), which served as a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.

lessons from DP Cardboard Box City“Shelter us, O Lord and give us the compassion and knowledge to help others in their search for shelter.”

While circumstances vary from person-to-person and family-to-family, homelessness occurs when individuals and families cannot find housing they can afford. The statistics speak for themselves:

• 578,424 people experience homelessness on any given night in the United States

• 216,197 are part of a family and 362,163 are individuals

• 15% of this population is “chronically homeless”

• 9% are veterans

Last spring, sophomore Honors Theology students came together for the Second Annual DePaul Catholic Cardboard Box City, organized by Valerie Haggerty, their teacher. Students brought oversized boxes, similar to those used by homeless people in urban areas, and created their own “city” on Alumni Field. More than “camping,” the students turned over their electronic devices and were only permitted simple food rations, including apple slices and water. Mother Nature took the concept of homelessness one step further by conjuring up 40-mph wind gusts and extremely cold weather.

“The meaning behind Cardboard Box City rang through loud and clear among the students – they were cold, they were tired and they heard unfamiliar noises in the night,” said Mrs. Haggerty. “But they were able to return to the comfort and warmth of their homes while the homeless have no other choice but to endure dire conditions night after night, day after day.”

Bethany Dacles, Social Studies Chair and Patricia Bullman, Theology Teacher, had the opportunity to participate in a two day workshop run collaboratively by the 9/11 Tribute Center, the Newseum and Facing History and Ourselves. The workshop offered methods on the use of first person accounts to deepen student understanding of the events of 9/11. Participants and presenters delved deeply into the power of survivor testimony and investigated the fine line between current events and history. Ms. Dacles and Mrs. Bullman also participated in journalism exercises and learned strategies for teaching students about the importance of reliable sources in order to encourage media literacy. Master teachers shared innovative lessons plans and highlighted Common Core alignment.

The Spartan Community gathered in prayer as a bell rang 14 times, marking each year since the events of 9/11. The flag was raised to half-mast to commemorate this somber event in our nation’s history and offer prayer and reflection for the families whose lives were impacted – and continue to be touched – by the tragic events of 9/11. DePaul Catholic also participated in a nationwide singing of the Star-Spangled Banner as part of the American Public Education Foundation

To celebrate the countless acts of heroism on what has now become known as A Day of Service, the DePaul Catholic Interact Club also collected canned goods on behalf of the Fr. English Community Center. This effort was yet another way the DePaul Family chose to honor the memory of those who lost their lives as well as those who risked their own as first responders on the scene.

Peer Ministers Pay it forwardIn the spirit of St. Vincent DePaul, Peer Ministers mentor members of the Freshman Class during their first semester of high school. • Kristine Aponte• Kathryn Brown

Midnight Run, a consortium of churches, synagogues, schools and other civic groups in the New York metro area, is dedicated to finding common ground between the housed and the homeless. The organization hosts over 1,000 relief missions per year, including three being conducted by DePaul Catholic’s 11th grade honors religion classes this year.

The late-night delivery of food, clothing, blankets and personal care items to the homeless poor throughout New York City creates a forum for trust, sharing, understanding and affection. Through Midnight Run, volunteers like Andrew

Haggerty, one of the program’s senior mentors who participated in the program as a junior, have gained a unique perspective about the homeless:

“My first shock of the evening was when I discovered that many of the homeless people were indistinguishable from everybody else. When they approached it was very hard not to be shocked by how “ordinary” they looked. But they were there for food and clothing because they were hungry and cold and had nowhere to sleep; that really hit me hard.

“While I was putting shoes and socks onto people’s feet who were quivering from the harsh weather, I realized how lucky and blessed I really am. That night I learned that there are so many people who live so close to me that are in such great need of help.” “I learned to never take what I have for granted any longer. I learned that many people in the world don’t have the opportunities that I have. I have all the tools necessary to succeed, I want to change the world for the better. This experience will stay with me for a very long time.”

Since the Prayer of St. Francis was first published in a small spiritual French magazine in 1912, this universal invocation has spoken to acceptance and the broader picture for millions, including Sam Angelella (’77), the recently retired 3-star Commanding General for U.S. forces in Japan and Commander of the 5th Air Force, Pacific Forces at Yokota Air Base in Japan.

The general’s deep-rooted faith and belief in the Peace Prayer can be traced back to his high school days at DePaul Catholic and elementary school years at St. Catherine’s of Bologna in Ringwood, N.J. “Before each class, Msgr. McHugh led us in the Prayer of St. Francis and it has left a lifelong impression on me,” he said. “During moments of private reflection, I still recite it today.”

As the senior Defense Official representing the United States in Japan, he was responsible for over 53,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines along with 50,000+ family members at more than 80 installations on Honshu, Kyushu and Okinawa. Prior to his assignment in Japan, Gen. Angelella was the Vice Director for Strategic Plans and Policy on the Joint Staff at the Pentagon. “My years at DePaul Catholic helped shape my values, which have served and continue to serve as the foundation for all that I do today,” he said. “Hard work, service and the desire to give back have been vital to my ability to take care of the people with whom I have worked throughout my entire career.”

Transitioning from the military to the private sector has returned the retired general to the Washington, DC-metro area on the mainland, where the DP alum now serves as Vice President of GE Aviation’s Military Customer Program. In this new role, he is responsible for GE’s engagement with all entities of the

U.S. military, including the Department of Defense, U.S. Services leadership in the Pentagon, Joint Staff, all Major Commands and Combatant Commands.

“When I share my experiences with others, I point out that I was just an average high school guy – a newspaper boy from New Jersey with good grades and good eyes who liked engineering,” said Gen. Angelella, who was in the Bowling Club at DePaul and considered himself more of a “mathlete” than an athlete at the time. “When I was presented with good opportunities or good turns in life, I seized them. When someone suggested I attend the Air Force Academy, I figured flying planes would be fun.”

While it took until the second half of training to be “bit by the bug” to fly, once the general flew in his first T-38 supersonic jet there was no looking back. “I thought to myself, yeah, this is cool,” he said. His military tenure extended 34 years, 2 months and 4 days, during which time he logged 3,200 flight hours in T-38 and F16 fighters, including 182 combat hours.

A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1981 with a bachelor’s in engineering mechanics, Gen. Angelella also earned two master’s degrees – one from the University of Alabama and the other from the Air University School of Advance Airpower studies.

Gen. Sam Angelella and his wife Marci met in Phoenix, where he was a flight instructor at Williams Air Force Base early in his career. Together, along with their children, they have been stationed in Hawaii, South Carolina, Washington, DC and Japan, where their son and daughter both graduated high school. The Angelella’s are happy to be back on the mainland, where they are geographically closer to their New Jersey-based children,

who attended The College of New Jersey and New Jersey Institute of Technology, as well as extended family.

“I still travel a great deal – I don’t think that will ever change – but this is my home base,” he said.

Prayer of Saint francisLord, make me an instrument

of thy peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

Where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that i may not so much seek

To be consoled as to console,

To be understood as to understand,

To be loved as to love;

for it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

it is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.

DP alum and Union City High School health sciences teacher Kimberly Velez Moreno was recently named New Jersey’s recipient of the prestigious Milken Educator Award. Mrs. Moreno, who has worked in the Union City school district for seven years, teaches anatomy, physiology, emergency care and health dynamics. She has also established and leads the district’s four-year-old health-related professions training program. A native of Paterson, Mrs. Moreno graduated DePaul in 2002 and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Montclair State University as well as a master’s degree in special education from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. She also received her ESP and supervisory certificates from William Paterson University. Currently, she is attending a doctoral program for educational leadership at the College of St. Elizabeth, to which she expects to devote her $25,000 in prize money.

The mission of DePaul Catholic’s Parents’ Association is to support the entire DePaul Catholic community through parent involvement. This is accomplished through a variety of efforts including a Hospitality Committee, Parent Ambassadors, and fundraising events to support our students and to offset costs associated with educating them and providing them with a safe, comfortable environment conducive to learning. In addition to shaping our three guiding principles of Scholarship, Faith and Community, volunteering as part of the Parents’ Association sets a powerful example for students and offers an opportunity to meet other parents while becoming an active member of the DePaul Catholic Family.

Ten students, who were members of the DePaul Catholic H.S. Star-Bangled Spartans, recently participated in the Knights of Columbus Wounded Warriors Tank Pull. Inspired to start a Wounded Warrior Project Club at DPCHS, the students applied their Spartan Spirit to celebrate members of the armed forces who demonstrate the same characteristic of the school’s symbol of courage and self-discipline.

Thanks to the Class of 2016’s Claudia Von Suskil for putting her green-thumb skills to work to beautify the Alumni Field walkway with colorful plantings, solar lighting and signage – all of which have been enjoyed by spectators who now use that walkway as the sole field entrance from the school parking lot!

c o m m u n i t yWelcome home: Former Classmates Reconnect at Reunions for Classes of 1963 and 1975

sPArTAN seNTiNeL l 2015 l DePaul Catholic High school l www.depaulcatholic.org

While there are countless ways for alums to stay connected to DePaul Catholic, Class Reunions offer former classmates a unique opportunity to renew old friendships and share life’s experiences. Recently, the Class of 1963 and Class of 1975 enjoyed the comfort of “coming home” to their high school alma mater to share an abundance of laughter, special memories and even a few tears of both happiness and loss for those who are no longer with us.

ClaSS of 1995The Class of 1995 gathered together on Saturday, October 16, 2015 at the Bethwood in Totowa, NJ to celebrate their 20th reunion. Close to 50 members of the class attended. Special thanks goes out to Giancarlo Fiorarancio for all his efforts in coordinating the event.

ClaSS of 1960

The Class of 1960, the first class to graduate from DePaul, held it’s 55th anniversary reunion on October 17th at the Paris Inn on Alps Rd. Twenty-one of the original seventy two graduates attended the reunion along with fourteen spouses.

Prior to the reunion dinner a Mass was celebrated by Father Michael Donovan, a former DePaul student, at the DePaul Chapel in memory of the 15 classmates that are known to be deceased and the departed faculty, especially the four founding nuns, Sister Ann Joachim, Sister Charles Eileen Reinhardt, Sister

Eucharia Marie, and Sister Thomas Loyola (aka Sister Pat Flarity).

All in attendance had a wonderful evening. Some extended the good time by staying over in a nearby hotel and met for dinner on Friday night and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Jay Giles, ‘60

ClaSS of 1963

The Class of 1963 celebrated their 52nd Reunion during August 14 and 15, 2015. The weekend began with an informal gathering at Portobello Restaurant Friday evening.

Then on Saturday afternoon, classmates attended a Remembrance Mass. A wine and cheese reception followed and classmates enjoyed a walk down memory lane touring the halls of De Paul.

60 were in attendance to celebrate the reunion party at the North Jersey Country Club Saturday evening. 40 classmates gathered from California, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, as well as the Tri-State area to re-connect, share memories and friendships. The reunion was so much fun and such a success!

Bonnie Shea Maes, ‘63

ClaSS of 1975

What started out as a huge undertaking of planning a reunion party, turned out to be a rewarding and an unbelievable experience for 90 plus members of the amazing class of 1975.

The reunion weekend started on campus in the Information Commons, (Senior Lobby), as many classmates watched the live stream of the Spartan football game against Bergen Catholic. This happened to be the featured game on ESPN, so as some watched from inside the building, others ventured out to Alumni Field to witness the game under the lights, some having never been back in over 40 years! Many wondered what happened to the cow pasture!

The following morning, under blue skies, several alums played golf and tennis, while others caught up with family and friends in the immediate area.

The highlight of the weekend, or at least according to so many that attended, was the Remembrance Mass in the DePaul Catholic Chapel with classmate, Rev. Joseph Garbarino celebrating mass and paying tribute to the 15 deceased classmates. A surprise impromptu hymn sung by former Spanish teacher, Pat Dean, was a wonderful addition. The Mass was followed by a wine and cheese reception and a tour of the school. The bookstore became a favorite stop that evening!

The next stop was the Embassy Suites in Parsippany where the class danced the night away and caught up with friends

who had traveled from over 20 states. A sing along of “Teach Your Children” had every single classmate on the dance floor! No one wanted the evening or weekend to end.

There is talk of a 60th birthday bash in 2017!

it is with gratitude and pride that we present the 2014-2015 statement of Voluntary support. The accomplishments of our students are as much yours as they are DePaul Catholic’s. Without the ongoing support of alumni, parents and friends, their academic success would not be possible.

The Annual fund enables DePaul Catholic to sustain excellence in teaching and student life as well as providing critical support for the operations for the school. Monies raised have also allowed for upgrades to the security system, a launch of a new website, new music practice space and the opening of the student information Commons.

The lists on the following pages contain the names of all who made contributions to the DePaul Catholic High school Annual fund either in the form of a direct gift or in donated services between July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015.

We have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this report. if there are errors or omissions, please accept our apology and notify us at 973-694-3702, ext. 440.
