Officials alert Nevada resideNts abOut flOOd-damaged cars

CARSON CITY — Insurance offi-cials in Nevada are warning potential used-car buyers to be on the lookout for flood-damaged vehicles.

The state’s Division of Insurance says vehicles that were damaged dur-ing widespread flooding in Texas and Florida earlier this year may be mak-ing their way into Nevada.

Insurance Commissioner Barbara Richardson says consumers should be “extremely careful.” She says flood-damaged vehicles are prone to failure and buyers may not be able to get them insured.

The Division of Insurance is urg-ing consumers to use websites to check the history and condition of the vehicle they are interested in buying.

Authorities in Texas in September said as many as a million vehicles flooded during Hurricane Harvey.

Flood-damaged vehicles usually have evidence of water and grit inside and in the engine compartment.

maN suspected Of stealiNg 30 beers arrested iN medical call

PAHRUMP — Law enforcement authorities in Pahrump say a man suspected of stealing 30 cans of beer in an armed robbery has been found by sheriff’s deputies responding to a call for medical assistance.

The Nye County sheriff’s office says 26-year-old Pahrump resident Daniel Weldon was found Sunday with a self-inflicted pellet-gun wound. The day before, deputies had responded

to an armed robbery call at a conve-nience store.

The sheriff’s office says Weldon was found wearing the boots the rob-bery suspect was reported to have worn. Authorities say Weldon also had 26 beers in a backpack that he al-lowed deputies to search.

Weldon was transported to a Las Vegas hospital and later taken to the Nye County Detention Center. He faces charges including armed robbery.

Records do not list an attorney who could comment on Weldon’s behalf.

pOlice: reward beiNg Offered iN sparks jewelry stOre theft

SPARKS — Police in Sparks say a reward is being offered for information that leads them to people who stole a pair of diamond earrings from a jew-elry store at an outlet mall last month.

Police on Thursday said the non-profit Secret Witness is offering $500 for details that lead to the arrest and prosecution of the two suspects in the theft case.

Authorities say the two men entered the jewelry store on Oct. 23, and while one of them distracted an employee, the other reached into an open show-case and removed the earrings.

Police say the earrings are valued at “a high dollar amount,” but would not disclose the exact figure.

Authorities are asking people with information to contact to police.

LAS VEGAS — Several survivors of the Oct. 1 mass shooting that killed 58 concert-goers and injured hun-dreds in Las Vegas are giving thanks for each other.

Victims of the Route 91 Harvest festi-

val shooting and their families reunited for a Thanksgiving potluck Saturday.

More than 100 people attended the dinner at the Henderson Convention Center, some even flying in for the oc-casion.

Many say it helps to be with others who understand their anguish, espe-cially with the holiday season.

Organizers say it is the first of sev-eral get-togethers survivors have planned.

They also want the ordeal to stay in the public’s consciousness.

Authorities say Stephen Paddock unleashed gunfire on the festival crowd last month from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino be-fore killing himself.

cOmmissiON suspeNds clark cOuNty judge whO explOded iN aNger

LAS VEGAS — The Nevada Com-mission on Judicial Discipline has suspended a Clark County District Court judge for two months without pay and ordered him to undergo a psychiatric exam.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal re-ports that Family Court Judge Wil-liam Potter ordered a lawyer hand-cuffed in court, commented on cases during his re-election bid and ex-ploded in anger during the commis-sion’s own hearing.

The commission’s decision Wednesday says the panel ques-tioned Potter’s “mental stability and capacity to control his anger.”

Potter watched video of the hearing when the attorney was put in hand-cuffs and said he didn’t violate judi-cial conduct rules but cringed when he saw his behavior.

The commission ordered Potter to submit the psychiatric exam’s results,

write letters of apology, perform com-munity service with an anti-bullying group and pay it $5,000.

BOULDER CITY — A $3.4 million renovation at a Lake Mead National Recreation Area campground is scheduled to begin next week.

The National Park Service says work on the five-month construc-tion project at Boulder Beach Camp-ground will begin Monday.

The planned improvements in-clude renovations of 73 campsites and installation of new sanitation and potable water refill stations. Camp-ground roads will also be repaved.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area superintendent Lizette Rich-ardson says the campground has been recognized as one of the top 50 in the West. She says the project “will modernize and enhance the visitor experience even more while reducing deferred maintenance.”

Parts of the campground will be closed to the public during the reno-vations.

Richardson says park entrance fees are being used to pay part of the proj-ect.

City of Sparks tree lighting ceremony and Hometowne Christmas parade this weekend

The City of Sparks Hometowne Christmas parade weekend will begin Friday with the annual tree lighting ceremony and end with the Christmas parade on Saturday.

The annual tree lighting ceremony will be held on Friday evening, the night before the parade, from 6:30 to 7 p.m. next to the large gazebo on the corner of Victorian Avenue and Victorian Plaza Circle. The city’s perma-nent living Christmas tree, a blue spruce, was installed in 2014. The ceremony will include a festive musical program from Sparks High School, Mayor Martini’s Alma Mater.

The mayor will flip the switch for the lights on the tree.

“This theme is not only a celebration of our great state, but the amazing people are the heart and soul of this place – like our Mayor,” Francine Burge, special events su-pervisor said. The parade is a festive tradi-tion for the holiday season with marching bands, costumes, animals, floats and more. The parade route travels from east to west on Victorian Avenue from Pyramid to 16th street and begins at 1 p.m. The two major floats, City Council and Santa, are spon-sored by Baldinis Casino and Rail City Ca-sino, respectively.

The Grand Marshal of the parade is Sparks Mayor Geno Martini. “This year is bitter-sweet, my last one as Mayor,” said Martini. “I am honored to serve the citizens of Sparks and to celebrate the beginning of the Christ-mas season with the tree lighting ceremony and parade.” The mayor will kick off the pa-rade in style in a new Tesla Model 3 car, cour-tesy of Tesla Motors.

The tree lighting ceremony will have en-tertainment and treats. Additionally, the Sparks Rotary Club will be pulling winning tickets for their Mad Money Raffle, with a grand prize of $10,000, $1,000 for first place, plus other prizes. Tickets will be sold until Dec. 1 for $100. Those who wish to purchase tickets can go to [email protected] for more information. The proceeds of the raf-

fle go to Kids Free Fishing Day, Sparks Po-lice Explorers, youth rotary programs, and Diedrichsen & Lincoln Park Elementary Schools.

The Mayor’s Own Marching Band will be featured in the parade, showcasing the musi-cal talents of Sparks middle school and high school students in a single large marching band. The band, sponsored by the Nugget Casino Resort, is comprised of more than 200 students from Sparks Middle School, Shaw Middle School, Sparks High School and Spanish Springs High School.

To help audience members requiring as-sistance, wheelchair seating area will be pro-vided along the parade route on the north-east corner of 10th & Victorian.

The Sparks Gives Back Challenge en-courages citizens to give back during the holiday season. “Since this season is all about giving, we incorporated a mecha-nism to recognize our neighbors that help each other out,” Burge said. To win the 2018 VIP package, people were encour-aged to post random acts of kindness with the hashtag #Sparksgivesback. This year’s winner, Kaci Mitchell, posted this mes-sage on the City of Sparks Facebook page: “Today me and a group of youth stuffed and gave out purses and backpacks full of soup and hygiene stuff. We handed out 19 bags total and took two garbage bags full of clothing and shoes as well.” Her entry was chosen at random, winning the Best Seat at the Parade. This includes premium seating with couches and chairs for her family. The promotion is sponsored by Western Vil-lage. The living room set will be provided by Restless Artists Theatre.

Scheels is kicking off the day with the Ugly Sweater Run at 10 a.m. Registration is avail-able at Scheels Customer Service. The fee is $20 or new toy donation. One hundred per-cent of the proceeds will benefit Toys for Tots.

Black bears back in eastern Nevada after 80-year absenceBy Scott SonnerAssociated Press

RENO — More than 500 black bears have returned to parts of their historic range in the Great Basin of Nevada where the species disap-peared about 80 years ago, scientists say.

A new study says genetic testing confirms the bears are making their way east from the Sierra ranges north and south of Lake Tahoe along the California line.

In some cases, recent gen-erations have moved hun-dreds of miles to sites near the Utah line, marking a rare example of large mammals recolonizing areas where they’d been wiped out.

“The recovery of large carnivores is relatively rare globally,” said Jon Beck-mann, a conservation scien-tist for the Wildlife Conser-vation Society in Bozeman, Montana, who co-authored the new study.

It concludes that bear populations originating in western Nevada mountain ranges have the genetic di-versity necessary to sustain the new subpopulations.

The findings are the re-sult of a partnership be-tween wildlife management and geneticists based on

bear hair and blood sam-ples taken over 20 years, said Jason Malaney, an en-vironmental scientist at the University of Nevada, Reno, who led the study.

He wrote that the study represents “one of the few empirical examples of ge-netic consequences of natural recolonization in large-bodied mammals.”

Carl Lackey, a Nevada state biologist, and Marjorie Matocq, a UNR scientist, co-authored the study.

The data provides ammu-nition for advocates of in-creased protection of wild-life corridors for a number of species in the basin — a vast stretch of desert and moun-tain ranges that covers most of Nevada, half of Utah and parts of Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon and California.

The study says the results are timely and relevant be-cause of projected climate change and the effects of hu-man population growth.

“As the human footprint expands over time in the region, this level of genetic connection among various mountain ranges may not last without conservation efforts to maintain connec-tivity,” it says.

Black bears were preva-lent across most of Nevada

during the 1800s but had been devastated in the Great Basin by the early 1900s, pri-marily due to unregulated hunting, conflicts with live-stock ranchers, logging and overgrazing.

Over time, bears have benefited from a reduction in logging, combined with improved land management practices and an emphasis on conservation, the study said.

“While barriers such as highways often reduce gene flow in other large-bodied mammals, black bears in the western Great Basin appear to occasionally traverse these obstacles,” the report said.

Beckmann said the bears have moved into central Ne-vada around Tonopah and Austin.

“We’re starting to see them clear over in places like Ely” near U.S. Highway 50 about 40 miles from the Utah line, he added.

Future steps to help the bears could include con-struction of wildlife-cross-ing structures at highways.

“They’re expensive, but within a decade or two they pay for themselves in terms of both wildlife connectivity and public safety,” Beck-mann said.

A series of tunnels and bridges have been built in eastern Nevada on U.S. Highway 93 north of Wells, and there’s a large passage over Interstate 80 west of Wendover, Utah.

Wyoming has them and one is planned in southeast Idaho. Grizzly bears use them at Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies.

“It may take several years but once they are comfort-able with them, they’re used regularly,” said Beckmann, who has authored a book on the topic.

REED fOOTball

Raiders capture 4A Northern crownReed to face Bishop Gorman Saturday in state title gameBy Eric DahlbergSparks Tribune

First-year head coach Tony Aman-tia knew what the expectations were when he was selected to lead the Reed football program back in February, just a month after long-time Raiders coach Ernie Howren stepped down to take the Bishop Manogue job.

It’s now safe to say he’s met, if not exceeded those after guiding his team to the state title game after a 24-21 win over Reno High on Friday to capture the 4A Northern Regional crown at Damonte Ranch High.

“I’m more excited for our kids and coaches than myself getting to the state game,” Amantia said. “I’m just relieved we could accomplish this for those kids.”

It was the second straight week Reed faced an undefeated team in an elimination game, and like last weeks 31-27 win over Damonte Ranch, they were the underdog and came out on top. They were able to erase the doubt that surrounded them after being blanked 39-0 by the very same Huskies team on Oct. 13 and won when it mattered most.

“I think beating two undefeated teams back to back proved that we are the best team in Northern Ne-vada this year,” Amantia said.

It also helped that the Raiders got off to a fast start.

Aidan Sawyer got his team on the board late in the first quarter with a 31 yard field goal and Josiah Schmidt punched the ball in from two yards out late in the second to give Reed a 10-0 lead that they would take into the half.

The Huskies would respond in the third quarter and take a 14-10 lead after a pair of long touchdown runs by Brandon Kaho to set up a wild fourth quarter.

With just under four minutes to play in the game, Raiders quarter-back Cameron Emerson capped off a lengthy drive with a one yard touch-down run to take a 17-14 lead. Champ

Robertson recovered a huge fumble just two minutes later to give Reed the ball back and George Moreno went on to ice the game with a 40 yard score.

“Our ability to run the ball was huge,” Amantia said. “Our offensive line has really improved and our of-fensive coaches have done a great job to figure out what we do well and lean in that direction with play calling.”

Reed will now face the task of tak-ing on a Bishop Gorman team that has dismantled every team in South-ern Nevada that has gotten in its way. Aside from two losses to nationally ranked opponents in early Septem-ber, the Gaels have won every game this season in blowout fashion, in-cluding seven straight shut outs from Sept. 23 to Nov. 3. They are coming off a 35-13 win over Liberty in the state semifinals and are com-ing to Reno clicking on all cylinders.

Amantia knows the challenge that lies ahead but is confident in his group that is playing its best football of the season.

“I expect our kids to play hard and put themselves in a position to win the game,” he said.

Kickoff is set for 12:10 p.m. Satur-day at Mackay Stadium on the cam-pus of the University of Nevada.

Martin tossed in 22 points and snared six rebounds and twin brother Cody added 16 points, seven boards and three steals to power Nevada to a 67-54 victory over Ha-waii on Friday night.

Jordan Caroline added 13 points for the unbeaten Wolf Pack (6-0), who closed out the victory on a 21-12 run over the final 8:54.

Sherriff Drammeh knocked down a jumper to pull the Rainbow War-riors (3-1) within 46-42 in the second half, but Lindsey Drew hit two 3-pointers and scored all eight of his points to help push the Wolf Pack’s advantage to 55-47.

Brocke Stepteau came off the bench to score 10 for Hawaii. No other War-rior reached double figures. Jack Purchase had eight re-bounds for Hawaii, but he missed all seven of his shots. Hawaii’s bench kept it in the game, outscoring the Ne-vada bench 26-8.

Nevada made 22 of 50 shots (44 percent) from the floor, but shot just 18 of 29 (62.1 percent) at the free-throw line. Hawaii hit 20 of 52 shots (38.5 percent) and was a paltry 11 of 21 (52.4 per-cent) at the foul line.

Nevada 81, davidsON 68RENO — Caleb Martin

knocked down 9 of 15 shots from the field and finished with a career-high 26 points to help Nevada remain un-beaten with an 81-68 win over Davidson last Tuesday night.

Josh Hall added 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, includ-ing 5 of 6 from 3-point range, and Caroline just missed his third double-double of the season with 16 points and nine rebounds for the Wolf Pack. Cody Martin added 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting as Nevada connected on 30 of 54 shots (55.6 percent). The Wolf Pack, coming off a school-record 17 3-pointers in a win over Pacific last time out, hit 9 of 20 (45 percent) from long range against Da-vidson.

Peyton Aldridge and Jon Axel Gudmundsson each scored 13 for the Wildcats, while Kellan Grady scored 10.

The Wolf Pack, who led by two at halftime, began to pull away early in the sec-ond half. Caroline scored all of Nevada’s points in an 8-2 spurt that stretched its lead to 53-43 with 13:25 left to play. The Wolf Pack’s lead stayed above 10 from that point on.

Cody Martin had four of Nevada’s 11 steals in the game.

Wolf Pack women win Nugget Classic title

Five members of the Ne-vada women’s basketball team scored in double fig-ures for the second straight game as the Wolf Pack de-feated SMU, 80-72, on Sun-day to capture the Nugget Classic title.

This is the Wolf Pack’s (3-2) first Nugget Classic cham-pionship since it defeated North Carolina State and San Diego State en route to the tournament title in 2010. Senior Halie Bergman was named the Nugget Classic Tournament MVP after she poured in 16.0 points per game, added 11 rebounds and 10 assists to just one turn-

over. For the weekend she connected on 54.2 percent (13-of-24) of her shots from the field, including 6-of-13 from beyond the arc.

Senior Teige Zeller and ju-nior AJ Cephas both earned a spot on the Nugget Clas-sic All-Tournament team as well. Cephas barely missed all weekend, shooting 70.8 percent (17-of-24) of her shots and collected 17 re-bounds, 10 of which came on the offensive end. Zeller also posted solid numbers with two games in double figures, including a career high 22 during Friday’s win over Sacramento State.

A sojourn into the life of a fallen Nevada giantReach out your handIf your cup is emptyIf your cup is fullMay it be again Let it be knownThere is a fountain That was not madeBy the hands of men — Robert Hunter & Jerry Garcia

This Friday, Nevada says farewell to a humble man who left a gigantic legacy.

My friend and NAACP colleague Darryl Feemster Sr. died Nov. 19 at St. Mary’s hospital after suffering a stroke. His memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Fri-day, December 1 at Sparks Christian Fellowship in the historic Greenbrae Center at Pyramid Way and Green-brae Drive.

Darryl comes from a large family of overachievers. His mother, Dolores, was a longtime counselor at Hug High School and grew up as the mixed-race daughter of an Italian-American in the old apartheid Reno. She emerged un-scathed in large part perhaps because of her disarming and affable person-ality. Dolores is everybody’s mom and grandma.

Whenever any student got into trouble at Hug, the reaction was al-ways “call Dolores,” even years after her retirement. Her home has been overrun with well-wishers since Darryl died but big crowds in that small dwelling are normal.

The most coveted political sign lo-cation in Washoe County is Dolores’ fence. Its bi-partisan success rate is the envy of campaign managers statewide.

If you go to a Feemster extended

family gather-ing, you’ll meet so many people that you’ll want a program to identify the players. You also have to avoid tripping over moppets from the next

generation of community leaders. You might even run into some NFL veterans.

Darryl used his NFL connec-tions to raise funds to build the Duncan-Traner Library in north-east Reno more than 20 years ago. Today, it serves not only the adjacent elementary and middle schools but also opens to the general public. His efforts kept the library open perma-nently despite two attempts to close it in recent years.

He was past retirement age but the City of Reno kept asking him to stay because of his value as manager of youth and senior services. The an-nual Senior Games was his respon-sibility among many other civic proj-ects including the Boys and Girls Club. When kids needed expanded summer programs or backpacks for school, Darryl secured them all the way down to the crayons.

Awhile back, he was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Reno City Council but declined to run for a full term. “He didn’t want the drama,” according to Reno Councilmember Oscar Delgado, who oughtta know. He kicked off his campaign with a neighborhood meeting at Dolores’ house. Of course.

Dolores is a walking history book of

the old and new Reno. Into that family, Darryl Feemster was born in 1962. Dolores’ 12 children include Lonnie Jr., a retired NVEnergy executive and four-time Reno-Sparks NAACP president who currently serves as a regional vice-president. Robert is a longtime Reno firefighter. Lonnie’s wife, Debra, served as Hug High principal and school district diversity manager. Dr. Debra was elected to the school board last year representing Sparks and the north Valleys.

“This will be remembered as a time when we lost a gathering of giants,” stated Patricia Gallimore, President of NAACP Reno-Sparks Branch No. 1112. Former presidents Eddie Scott and Bill Moon, among other pioneers, died earlier this year.

“The Feemster family has been the branch’s bedrock for decades,” she added.

Darryl’s formal and extensive obit-uary will be linked to the expanded web edition of this column at Barb-wire.US/ You may post condolences at RenoSparksNAACP.org/

A giant has fallen. He leaves huge shoes to fill. All volunteers welcome, just like Dolores’ house.

Happy High Holly Days to you and yours.

Be well. Raise hell. Esté bien. Haga infierno.

The American Civil Liber-ties Union of Nevada filed a lawsuit this past week in Carson City attempting

to block the voters from having a say on an initiative petition that would amend the state Constitu-tion to prohibit sanctuary cities in Nevada.

ACLU of Nevada Executive Director Tod Story was quoted in a press release as saying, “This pointless, poorly crafted peti-tion would only serve to alienate Nevada’s immigrant communities from local police officers and vital government services, making our communities more vulnerable to crime and overall worse off.”

Frankly, that is a political ar-gument as to whether the voters should reject the amendment, not a legal argument for preventing the voters from voicing their opinions.

The petition filed with the Ne-vada Secretary of State in October is being advanced by the Prevent Sanctuary Cities Political Action Committee, which is headed up by Republican state Senate leader Michael Roberson.

The description of effect of the initiative reads, “If enacted, this measure will add a new section to the Nevada Constitution that will prohibit the legislature, a county or city from enacting a law or ordinance, or otherwise adopting, enforcing or endorsing a policy which prohibits or discourages cooperation with the enforcement of the immigration laws of the United States. To become effective this measure must be approved by a majority voters in two general elections.”

The press was not able to obtain a reaction from Roberson about the ACLU suit.

To put the measure on the 2018 ballot backers must obtain 112,544 signatures by June. It would need to be approved by a majority in 2018 and 2020 to become law.

The ACLU press release also quoted suit plaintiff Xiomara Ro-driguez of the nonprofit Tu Casa Latina, “We know that this policy will endanger immigrant commu-nities. We’ve already seen victims of workplace harassment or do-

New book explores ‘Wild Horse Country’

What should be done about wild horses?

Colorado-based writer David Philipps

attempts to answer that question in his 316-page book “Wild Horse Country,” published in October.

The book sweeps across a span of time and landscape as vast as the range of the wild horse, delving into views and suggestions from horse-huggers and horse-dispar-agers alike, turning more than a few colorful similes and metaphors along the journey.

“Wild horses! Even if you have never seen one, chances are if you grew up in the United States you know what they mean,” Philipps en-thuses. “They are freedom. They are independence. They are the ragtag

misfits defy-ing incredible odds. They are the lowborn outsiders whose nobility springs from the adversity of living a simple life. In short, they are

American. Or least they are what we tell ourselves we are, and what we aspire to be.”

The writer crisscrosses Nevada in his trek toward understanding what should be done to and for the wild horses — discussing Nevadans from Reno secretary Velma John-ston who in 1950 cried after spotting a truck load of bleeding wild horses

in Sparks being hauled to slaughter and went on to become nationally famous as “Wild Horse Annie” to interviewing Twin Springs Ranch owner Joe Fallini who has success-fully sued the government nearly 30 times over its failure to rein in the wild horse population on his ranch and who curses “these goddamned horses.”

The problem is that the wild horse population on the open range has far exceeded what the land can sustain. The Bureau of Land Man-agement’s answer — since Congress has prohibited using budget money to humanely dispose of excess animals — has been to roundup excess horses and warehouse them

OPINIONHillary, Kap, Lynch and BB

HUMPTY DUMPTY HIL-LARY. Like the fictional nursery rhyme character, Hillary Clinton took a

tremendous fall last November and all the king’s (Obama’s) horses and all the king’s (Obama’s) men could not put her together again.

In Hillary’s case, the horses and men included President Obama, Joe Biden, Michelle Obama, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, the disgraced DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Donna Brazile who leaked debate questions and most of the mainstream media.

The latest outburst from Hillary, while conducting her never-ending book tour, was against FOX News when she stated that if the channel had been around when husband Bill was going through his sexual escapades, he probably would not have been elected. This comment came in the wake of the flood of sexual harassment charges against a number of prominent celeb-rities. In essence, whether she knew it or not, by her statement about FOX, she was ratifying the fact that during Bill’s career all the mainstream media was totally liberal. Since she had co-opted the DNC during her presidential run, there is little wonder that she took long absences from the campaign trail and refused to give timely Press con-ferences. As she waddled imperiously toward certain victory, she had a rope line before her that kept her separated from the Press and the hoi polloi.

Counterpoint to her book, “What Happened” was the recent release of Donna Brazile’s tome, which might well have been titled, “What Really Happened”. In Brazile’s book, she noted that, at one point in time, she was considering replacing Hillary with Joe Biden. This came about because of Brazile’s concern with Hil-lary’s health, a point that rival Donald Trump hammered on consistently. Also, Brazile’s book highlighted the chaos in Hillary’s campaign that was first exposed by Wiki Leaks.

Today there is word that a riveting disclosure is soon to be released about Hillary’s connection to the infamous Uranium One deal.

***CITIZEN OF THE YEAR? The

current issue of the upscale GQ Mag-azine features a picture of a nattily dressed, full blown afro coiffed Colin Kaepernick, who has been named their Citizen of the Year. It’s unknown so far whether sales of the mag have increased or decreased.

***MEXICO VS. THE UNITED

STATES. In the recent Oakland Raiders/New England Patriots football game in Mexico City when the Star Spangled Banner was played, Oakland running back Marshawn Lynch took a seat ala Kaepernick and when the Mex-ican National Anthem was played, he stood for the song. Apparently, Lynch thinks that conditions in Mexico re the racial divide are far better than those

in the United States. Possibly he has failed to watch TV or read newspapers regard-ing the grisly ac-counts of mass mur-ders, warring cartels and the propensity for Mexico to jail Americans carrying

firearms. By his action, he has basically one-upped Kaepernick.

***FULL CONTACT BASKETBALL.

During most of my days playing roundball, you were limited to four fouls before you were ejected. Those fouls were called when you made physical contact with an opponent. Whether the contact was inadvertent or intentional did not matter.

Today the old foul rules have gone by the wayside, particularly in NBA contests. The latest most striking ex-ample of aggressive fouling, which was ignored by the three referees, occurred during a Warriors vs. Celtics game. The recipient of most of the aggression from the Celtics was Warriors star Steph Curry. In that game Curry spent almost as much time on his back as he did on his feet by being consistently fouled on lay-up attempts.

The previous game was so one-sided in the foul department that it caused the TV commentators who are usually very non-partial to state, “Three persons did not do their job to-night-and you know who they were.” They added that of the two West Coast teams who were playing the East that week-the Oakland Raiders and the Warriors-the basketball squad faced the most physical opposition.

In days of yore, most basketball players were tall and lithe, such as War-riors superstar of the past Rick Barry. Basketball players were never encour-aged to go in to the weight room. Today, however, the majority of the players are heavily muscled, with Lebron James being the perfect example.

Over the years, MBA referees have gotten worse and worse. The addition of a third referee has done little to help the situation. Professional games have grown longer due to the fact that the three referees consistently go to the scoring table to review replays of controversial situations.

When one team gets twice as many free-throws as the other team, such as happened in the Warriors/Celtics game, there is more than a vestige of one-sidedness.

Probably, the most egregious miscall that occurred in the Boston/Golden State game occurred when Draymon Green was going in for a layup and a Celtic launched his body against Green, causing him to miss the shot and lose the ball out-of-bounds. Un-believably, the referee ignored the foul and gave Boston the possession. This brought Warriors coach Steve Kerr, a former NBA player himself, fuming off the bench and deriding the ref.

‘I love you, and I’ll never leave you’

She is pushing her fiancée to say it out loud. She ‘hears’ it, feels it, smells it, and it would be a relief

to them both if he would just say it. But he is struggling. He is afraid. So, as the moments tick by, the unspoken sits between them.

What he needs to say out loud is, “This is a deal-breaker. I cannot abide this relationship in these circumstances. If these circumstances persist, I won’t choose this. I won’t choose you. I will leave.”

And I think of Rex. Rex is my mentor, my friend, and the closest thing to a father I will ever have. I met him when I was 11. A sixth grader. He was 32. His psychic fingerprints are all over whatever qualities I possess as a man.

Rex was a walking library of great one-liners. Here is one of my favorites: “In every human heart is the longing to hear the words, “I love you, and I will never leave you.”

Oh my. These words fell powerfully on me, a then-boy and now a man whose default worldview is “Everybody leaves.” Eventually. Sooner or later everyone will find the thing about Steven that just doesn’t measure up. That no love can embrace or tolerate. I was at once one of those humans long-ing to hear those words, even a man daring someone to say it; but, for much of my life, unwill-ing to risk believing those words even if uttered.

But Rex was right. When I finally heard and believed those words, I was changed.

Yet, the couple in front of me is discussing deal-breakers. It doesn’t fit. If radical commit-ment is “I love you and I’ll never leave you,” then why are they discussing deal-breakers. Terri-fied to discuss it, actually; but it’s in the room here with us.

It’s not a contradiction; rather, a fascinating paradox. Radical commitment is held upright by the bookends of deal-breakers. Before we can meaningfully say “I love you and I’ll never leave you,” we must have a list of scenarios and circumstances in which we’d never consider this relationship. And, once radically committed to the relationship, those same deal-breakers stand sentry at the other end, holding all accountable. Expecting the best. Insisting on the best.

Here’s a lesser-known maxim when looking for a mate: Always fall in love with someone who has the strength to leave you. Who could leave, if and when circumstances warranted leav-

ing. Because it is precisely this kind of strength that makes commitment authentic, meaningful, powerful, deeply cred-ible. If our mate must

stay, then staying doesn’t have all that much value. If our mate has the strength to leave, then this gives great meaning to the fact that they stay.

Comedian Paul Riser says it this way in his book Couple-hood: “In the end, you marry the person who won’t let you get away with anything.”

Deal-breakers are the ‘shadow side’ of radical commitment. Without deal-breakers, commit-ment becomes a mere sentiment, not a decision/act coming from a place of real power. Without deal-breakers, “’til death do us part” decays to “sure hope this works out.”

I revel in my mate’s commit-ment. I feel it. It embraces in me what is lovely and unlovely. It embraces the joys of my past, and the failures. She at once never expects me to be perfect, yet never stops expecting the best of me.

But …Let me begin to speak to her

with disdain, scorn, or degra-dation, and I would find myself staring down the business end of her self-respect. Let her discover I’m secreting some dalliance with an Internet babe, and I’d get the ol’ heave-ho quicker than you can say “Jesse James.”

Same with me. I love her and I’ll never leave her. And … if I find out tomorrow that she’s making methamphetamine in the bathtub and selling it to 3rd graders, I’m walking. And call-ing the police on the way out.

The man in my office finally speaks: “I’m not staying in a marriage with a woman that falls asleep every night on the couch in a vodka fog.”

There’s a loud pause in the room. She is sober, sad, but seems peaceful. Even relieved. She needed to feel the strength of his self-respect. “Thank you,” she says simply. The very next day she’s at her first AA meeting.

If there is no scenario in which your commitment could and would be withdrawn, then your commitment isn’t healthy.

in corrals and private pastures where the stallions and mares are kept separate for all their natural lives. Such warehousing, Philipps notes, now eats up 66 percent of the BLM’s budget, leaving little to cover the expense of managing the horses still roam-ing wild and competing for forage with sheep and cattle and wildlife.

According to the latest BLM stats pub-lished in March, there are nearly 60,000 free-roaming horses in the West, with nearly 35,000 of those in Nevada. But the BLM calculates the entire range can sustain only 27,000 wild horses without leading to degradation of the forage and the horses themselves. There are nearly 45,000 “wild” horses being held in storage at a cost of $50 million a year.

“Wild horses are the only species that the government captures in large numbers alive and then holds in storage,” Philipps observes. “This is a stark departure from how we treat other Old World domestic animals that have gotten loose in America. Take feral hogs. The United States kills tens of thousands a year. … Sure, feral hogs aren’t companion animals like horses. But consider our pets. We eutha-nize millions of dogs and cats each year.”

To set the stage for how this came to be the author, who won a Pulitzer Prize for the Col-orado Springs newspaper in 2014 for a series on the mistreatment of wounded soldiers, delves both into the fossils of long-extinct horselike creatures that once browsed the

Western plains and the “return” of horses with Spanish conquistadors.

Philipps’ research shows how the horse changed history. For instance, Francisco Pizarro defeated 80,000 Incas with 106 men on foot and 62 in the saddle.

Then, in the late 17th century the rise of wild horses on the range gave birth to Native American “Horse Nations” that thrived on horseback for two centuries — Apaches, Utes, Sioux, Comanches, Nez Perce, Sho-shone, Blackfoot, Crow, Cree, Pueblos, Na-vajo, Pawnee, Arapaho, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Osage and many more.

“The Apache and Kiowa gave up lives of farming to hunt and raid on horseback. The Osage, Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho, living in the forests on the eastern edge of the plains, were drawn westward with horses, leaving behind wood lodges in favor of new buffalo-skin tents called teepees,” the book recounts, also noting that horse-mounted Indians managed to slow the westward mi-gration of American settlers.

Philipps recounts how the automobile devastated the market for horses as beasts of burden and how mechanized pet food canning factories consumed 2 million wild horses in the 1920s. Though the slaughters continued over the years, in 2007 Congress defunded health inspections for horse-meat slaughter houses, whether for human or pet consumption, driving all such operations into Mexico or overseas.

mestic violence refuse to call the police because they’re afraid of being torn away from their families. If local police become immigration agents, there’s a very real possibility these communi-ties will face more abuse.”

Former Washoe County Sheriff Michael Haley, also a plaintiff in the suit, was quoted as saying, “We know that compelling local law en-forcement to enforce federal immigration law is actually harmful to public safety. Po-lice are less likely to receive valuable information or tips from communities that are terrified of facing possible deportation. It has the po-tential to increase crime and harm the entire community. Fundamentally this initia-tive undermines our ability to keep our communities safe.”

Again, political argu-ments not legal ones. Any other laws the police should ignore in order to endear themselves with certain communities?

During this past legislative session, Democrats tried to push legislation limiting the role of law enforcement in cooperating with immigra-tion enforcement agencies. Roberson fought the efforts and the bill died.

The only legal argument the ACLU makes is that the petition is deceptive or misleading because it fails to provide any infor-mation about the effects of enactment. Perhaps that is because any such effort to do so would be wildly specu-lative and subject to being challenged by the likes of the ACLU no matter what was said.

The courts should shunt this attempt to prevent the voters from deciding this matter. Let the voters decide, one way or the other. — TM

Santa will take up resi-dence in the Sparks Muse-um’s upstairs Gallery from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and after the parade from 3 to 4 p.m. Santa will visit with children and pose for commemora-tive photos that cost either one dollar or a canned food donation. Boys & Girls Club members will serve as San-ta’s helpers with all money being donated to the Boys & Girls Club.

The Sparks Museum & Cultural Center will be pre-senting “Lady Jill 40th An-niversary Show.” This collec-tion of Lady Jill represents 40 years of the Nevadan artist’s original art, including trans-

parent watercolors, etchings, pencil drawings and one re-maining oil of her collection, spanning 1977 to present. The train display and historic Glendale schoolhouse will be open and free to the public for tours beginning at 10 a.m. until the parade begins.

Radio partners, Cumulus Communications , Lotus Ra-dio, NV 89 and Reno Radio Group will keep the parade moving with announcing/re-view stands along the route with the “play by play.” The Entravision booth located at 11th and Victorian will have a Spanish translation of the parade review.

The event could not hap-pen without our volunteers. The parade is laid-out and staged by the volunteers of Hot August Nights. Hot Au-gust Nights members also provide all the spectacular cars for the dignitaries as well as course marshals along the parade route. Boys and Girls Club provide the volunteers that take photos with Santa. Living Stones Church pro-vides volunteers for the pa-rade announcers, assist with set up and tear down, coor-dinate the parade off loading and provide hospitality at the parade and the tree lighting ceremony.

There will be no proration of taxes, rents or other income or liabilities, except that the purchaser will pay, at or before closing, his pro rata share of any real estate taxes that have been paid by the Secretary to the date of the foreclosure sale. When making their bids, the winning bidders with the exception of the Secretary must submit a deposit totaling ten percent (10%) of the Secretary’s estimated bid amount in the form of a certified check or cashier’s check made payable to the undersigned Foreclosure Commissioner. Ten percent of the estimated bid amount for this sale is $28,666.98. A deposit need not accompany each oral bid. If the successful bid is oral, a deposit of $28,666.98 must be presented before the bidding is closed. The deposit is nonrefundable. The remainder of the purchase price must be delivered within 30 days of the sale or at such other time as the Secretary may determine for good cause shown, time being of the essence. This amount, like the bid deposits, must be delivered in the form of a certified or cash-ier’s check. If the Secretary is the highest bidder, he need not pay the bid amount in cash. All extensions will be for 15 day increments for a fee of: $500.00, paid in advance. The extension fee shall be in the form of a certified or cashiers check made payable to the Secretary of HUD. If the high bidder closes the sale prior to the expiration of any extension period, the unused portion of the extension fee shall be applied toward the amount due. If the high bidder is unable to close the sale within the required period, or

within any extensions of time granted by the Secretary, the high bidder may be required to forfeit the cash deposit or, at the election of the Foreclosure Commissioner after con-sultation with the HUD representative, will be liable to HUD for any costs incurred as a result of such failure. The Commissioner may, at the direction of the HUD representa-tive, offer the property to the second highest bidder for an amount equal to the highest price offered by that bidder. There is no right of redemption, or right of possession based upon a right of redemption, in the mortga-gor or others subsequent to a foreclosure completed pursuant to the Act. Therefore, the Foreclosure Commissioner will issue a Deed to the purchaser(s) upon receipt of the entire purchase price in accordance with the terms of the sale as provided herein. HUD does not guarantee that the property will be vacant. The scheduled foreclosure sale shall be cancelled or adjourned if it is established, by documented written application of the mortgagor to the Foreclosure Commissioner not less than 3 days before the date of sale, or otherwise, that the default or defaults upon which the foreclosure is based did not exist at the time of service of this notice of default and foreclosure sale, or all amounts due under the mortgage agreement are tendered to the Foreclosure Commissioner, in the form of a certified or cashier’s check payable to the Secretary of HUD, before public auction of the property is completed. The amount that must be paid if the Mortgage Deed of Trust is to be reinstated prior to the scheduled sale is based on the nature of the breach, this loan is not subject to reinstatement. A total payoff is required to cancel the foreclosure sale or the breach must be otherwise cured. A description of the default is as follows: FAILURE TO PAY THE PRINCIPAL BALANCE WHICH BECAME ALL DUE AND PAYABLE BASED UPON THE DEATH OF ALL MORTGAGORS.
