WINE CLUBOF THE YEAR
CHALLENGE 2014
OUR FIZZING SUMMER SHORTLIST It’s that time of year when it’s imperative to have a bottle or two of sparkling wine on ice ready for an impromptu summer celebration.
Bubbly is enjoying double-digit growth in the UK at the moment and it’s easy to see why when you consider the remarkable quality and value for money available from all corners of the wine world.
This summer shortlist contains the wines that really stood out during recent extensive tastings. There are a number of different styles, from the traditional Champagne-style Quartet from
California to the fruit-driven, lighter-bodied Prosecco Duecento from Italy. The popular (and exclusive) Blind Spot Tasmanian sparkler makes a welcome return alongside a cracking new South African pinot meunier. The mixed case offers a bottle of each for a range of occasions this summer, and includes a small saving to encourage you to try something new.
Cheers!
Sarah Knowles Society Buyer
Prosecco Brut I Duecento NV This member favourite is made for us by Araldica at Castelboglione in Piedmont. Gently aromatic, light and refreshing, it is incredibly easy to drink and enjoy. Perfect when one bottle just won’t suffice. 11.5% ref SK-IT17411 £7.75 bottle £93 dozen
The Society’s Cava Reserva Brut NVSumarroca, a small family estate in Penedès near Barcelona, makes this for us using the traditional cava grapes plus a touch of chardonnay to add finesse. It is made using the Champagne method and ages for 30 months on its lees that gives the wine great brioche richness to complement the green-apple flavours. 11.5% ref SK-SG1661 £8.50 bottle £102 dozen
Villiera Cap Classique Pinot Meunier Brut 2010 Villiera are best known in the Cape for their sparkling wines, and created this cracking new fizz exclusively for The Wine Society. A rare example of pure pinot meunier (one of the Champagne grapes) that is well rounded and remarkably easy to drink. 12% ref SK-SG1831 £12.50 bottle £150 dozen
Blind Spot Tasmania Sparkling Brut 2010 Another Wine Society exclusive, sourced by Mac Forbes from some of the coolest sites for chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier in Tasmania. There is great intensity and freshness, reflective of the cooler site and the traditional method used in production. Very stylish and brilliant value. 12% ref SK-SG1861 £13.95 bottle £167 dozen
MiruMiru Hunter’s Marlborough Brut NV This is made by Jane Hunter in Marlborough, New Zealand. A super fizz from the classic blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier, and made using the traditional method. There is green apple, lemon and toast on the nose and the bubbles are tight and firm, giving great texture and balancing the intense citrus core. MiruMiru means ‘bubbles’ in Maori. 12.5% ref SK-SG1821 £14.95 bottle £179 dozen
Quartet Anderson Valley Brut Roederer Estates NV A standout wine for class, complexity and balance from the Anderson Valley in California. Wonderful lemon and brioche notes on the nose are very reminiscent of Champagne, but with a little more ripeness and generosity. The mousse is fine yet firm, and the flavours really develop on the palate, encouraging a second sip. The blend is 60% chardonnay and 40% pinot noir. 12% ref SK-SG161 £19.50 bottle £234 dozen
This offer is open until Sunday 21st June 2015 while stocks last.
