Spanish 2301 Spring 2012
Course DescriptionBienvenidos to Spanish 2301! This is the third three-credit course of the Spanish Language Program. It has been
designed for students of Spanish as a Second Language who have successfully completed the previous Spanish courses
or have been placed through the Spanish placement exam. This class follows a communicative approach: from the first
day of class you will use Spanish to interact with your instructor and classmates in meaningful contexts. By the end of
this course you will have a general knowledge of the Spanish vocabulary and grammar, and you will be able to
communicate effectively in Spanish according to this level.

Learning outcomes1. Students will develop communicative competence at the intermediate level through the enhancement of listening and
speaking skills in Spanish, which will allow them to communicate with confidence in different type of common
interactions.
2. Students will demonstrate advanced intermediate competence in reading and writing in Spanish, through daily
reading activities and writing assignments that will require analytical and critical skills.
3. Students will demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of Spanish grammar at the advanced intermediate level; in
addition, they will be introduced to the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world and its people.
Grading system:Attendance and participation 10%
Homework 10%
Oral activities 14% (1 recorded interview x 7% + 1 oral situation x 7%)
Written activities 10% (2 essays x 5% )
Quizzes 10% (2 x 5%)
Tests 30% (3 x 10%)
Final oral assessment 16%
Final Grade: 100%

StudentsResponsibilities
I. Attendance to scheduled sessions.
To derive the utmost benefit from this class, daily attendance is essential. We invite you to take advantage of the
possibility of practicing the language in class. Attendance to each session is required.
More than nine hours of unexcused absences per semester will result in a zero participation /attendance grade. If
you are registered, but do not attend the course you are responsible for following the withdrawing procedures or
an F will be entered as your final grade for this class.
You should not make travel/employment plans that interfere with classes or exams since make-up exams cannot be
made in order to accommodate such plans.
You are responsible for contacting other classmates to obtain any information discussed in the event of class
missed.
Student athletes, band members and members of other university sanctions should bring a letter from their
supervisor or specific department during the first week of class indicating the dates they will miss class.
Students who require special accommodations for religious holidays should make arrangements with their
instructor during the first week of class.
Students with recognized disabilities will be provided reasonable accommodations, appropriate to the course, upon
documentation of disability with a Student Accommodation Form from the Center for Students with Disabilities. To
receive these special accommodations, you must request the specific accommodations by submitting them to the
instructor in writing during the first week of class. Students who fail to submit a written request will not be

II. Active Participation in sessions
In class participation provides one of the best opportunities to develop your Spanish communicative skills. Taking
active part in this course is fundamental for your success, and you will receive a grade for your participation. Your
instructor will evaluate your participation level twice per semester.
III. Course Workload
Homework (La tarea)
The development of the language skills requires daily practice. This course requires completion of daily online
assignments (detailed on the tentative schedule) and represents a 5% of the HW grade. Your instructor will assign
different activities during the semester which count as other 5%.
All homework should be completed by the date indicated on the tentative schedule.
Late homework is not accepted. Incomplete homework will not be given a mark.
You must score at least 75% in your online HW to earn a grade for your work.
You can use theLanguage Acquisition Center(AH 310-311) to do your online homework.
Oral Activities. Your oral skills in Spanish will be assessed three times during the semester. First you will complete a
recorded interview using the Wimba system. A second oral assessment will consist of a group activity (2-3 students)
based on real-life dialogues. You will utilize vocabulary and grammar structures you have learned in the course. A
comprehensive oral assessment will be held at the end of the semester

Writing activities: During the semester you will present two 250/300-word compositions on one of the topics
discussed in class. All writing activities will be submitted through Turnitin in your class BlackBoard. Please check
the schedule for deadlines.
You may not submit a writing project or essay already submitted in another class for a grade, even if it is your
own work. This constitutes a violation of the Academic Honesty Policy. Any assignment in this course is to be
original work. Your instructor may request a hard copy of all the activities leading up to the final version of the writing
activity. Final version will be submitted through Turnitin in your class BlackBoard
All writing activities must be typed, doubled spaced, 12 pt font, using Spanish characters (, , , , , )
No late writing activity will be accepted.
All writings are to be your own work. You may not seek tutoring or any other kind of help for the writing
activities; only your instructor is authorized to give such help. Use of translation devices or services to
complete a writing task is not allowed either.
Tests and quizzes: There will be two short quizzes and three chapters exams on vocabulary, grammar and reading
materials covered in class. A final oral exam will be held at the end of this course. Dates are indicated in the tentative
schedule and may be modified depending on the course needs. Students requiring special testing accommodationsmust provide documentation to the instructor during the first week of class.
Absence from Tests: If you will be absent from an exam or quiz, you must contact the Instructor or Coordinator for your class at
least a week in advance. Make ups will be given after the test date.
You must provide written documentation for any absence before a make-up is authorized. No make-ups will be
considered without written, justifiable documentation for your absence. Make-ups are given the week
following the missed test.
Preexisting travel plans are not considered a reasonable cause for missing an Exam or Quiz.
Sickness without a Dr.s excuse is not considered reasonable cause for make-up authorization.
V. Important Class Policies Your cell phone must be turned off and stored away.
Tardiness: Your instructor may deny admission to students who arrive 15 minutes late.
Violations of the Code of Conduct will not be tolerated. This means that homework assignments, writing
assignments, exams and quizzes must be your own work. Any violation of this policy will result in expulsion
from the class, and implementation of sanctions as stated in the Student Code of Conduct.
Presenting previously submitted material for this or other classes will be considered a violation of the
Academic Honesty code of conduct.
Any behavior considered disruptive or that does not contribute positively to the learning environment of the
class will be sanctioned as stated in the Student Code of Conduct.
No eating, chewing or smoking is allowed in the classroom.
No Extra Credit is available for this course.
NOTE: if during a session you use your cell phone, you will be asked to leave the classroom and you will receive anabsent for the session.
