Joint Replacement Center at Overlake

Two new cardiothoracic surgeons joined the Cardiac Center at Overlake—David Nelson, MD and Robert Binford, MD. They are the latest additions to Overlake’s experienced cardiac team and Cardiothoracic Surgery Program.

“I came to Overlake because the program is positioned to move ahead with the changes that are coming down the road in medicine,” Dr. Nelson says.

Overlake uses an interdisciplinary approach to cardiac care and the surgeons treat everything from heart disease to valve disease to aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections. Overlake has been

named one of the Top 100 Hospitals for Cardiovascular Care by Thomson Reuters and named a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care by Premera Blue Cross.

“Overlake has a culture of cardiologists, surgeons and support staff working together as a team for the benefit of the patient,” Dr. Binford adds. “Our cardiologists and surgeons provide the latest treatment and technologies, and our outcomes are superior.”

“I focus on the fact our patients will be standing at their bedside, putting full weight on their operated joint the day of surgery; and the next day they’ll be walking to group therapy,” James Bruckner, MD explains why he’s chosen Overlake Hospital Medical Center’s Joint Replacement Center as the only place he does surgery. Dr. Bruckner is a high volume orthopedic surgeon doing more than 250 total joint replacements a year at Overlake.

Dr. Bruckner explains a high volume surgeon and a high volume joint replacement center, such as Overlake’s, have been scientifically shown to be the best predictor of patients’

That commitment also involves a dedicated orthopedics unit where patients are essentially healthy, but have a worn out hip or knee. “The goal is to get out of the hospital as quickly as possible and back to a normal, active life,” Dr. Bruckner says. Overlake’s Joint Replacement Center approaches the entire process with rapid rehabilitation in mind—hospital stays average two to three days and group therapy help patients jumpstart their recovery.

outcomes. “Nothing else matters,” Dr. Bruckner says. “Overlake’s high volume joint replacement product is like a plane that comes from Boeing versus one I build in my backyard from a kit,” he says. “The high number of procedures provides predictability and quality control. It is the best chance of success for the patient.”

Overlake’s Joint Replacement Center represents a commitment to orthopedics unmatched at other facilities on the Eastside. Dr. Bruckner mentions, “It starts with a thorough education for the patient and they can count on the same people taking care of them throughout their recovery.”
