To meet the demand for high productivity, Toyoda has achieved the perfect balance between speed and rigidity. The main components have been carefully designed and engineered to provide optimum cutting times. Likewise, intervals between operations have been reduced to a minimum.

SpindleThe FH550S and FH630S are equipped with a 15,000 min-1 (15,000 rpm) spindle with a standard #50 taper toolholder. Designed for quick acceleration and deceleration, the high-gain spindle is key to boosting productivity. Top speeds are reached in only 2.3 seconds.

Many spindle options are available. These include a 15,000 rpm #40 unit, or HSK tooling systems. The FH-SX package has a high-power 6,000 rpm #50 spindle for heavy cutting applications.

1G AccelerationToyoda’s low-friction linear guides use roller bearings. This design provides twice the rigidity and three times the vibration-dampening performance of traditional ball bearings.

High-speed column travel is essential to minimize non-cutting time. Advanced topographic optimization analysis (with FEM) made it possible to remove excess weight from the column and lower the center of gravity while maintaining necessary rigidity. The result is a rate of acceleration up to 1G (9.8m/s2) with a rapid feedrate of 60 m/minute (2,362 ipm).

Table and Pallet ChangerAs a standard feature to reduce non-cutting time, the machines are equipped with high-speed rotary tables with 1-degree indexing. Options include a 360,000 position table with NC-controlled B axis for contour machining. Under a 1760 lb load, the FH550S table indexes 90 degrees in 2.0 seconds, and 180 degrees in 2.4 seconds. The FH630S has a maximum table load of 2640 lbs.

Precise pallet positioning is accomplished by locating pins and hand-scraped pads. Six points verify the X, Y and Z-axis position. A clamping plate runs the full lenth of the pallet so there is no risk of distortion at any single point. The clamping system is reliable also because it does not catch chips.

Shown with optional linear scales.

Tool Storage (ATC)The standard tool magazine has 60 pockets, with available to accommodate up to 504 tools. Faster magazine indexing and spindle orientation work together with simultaneous high-speed tool change to reduce the chip-to-chip time by 50 percent. The servo-driven motor delivers tools at optimum speeds from 2.0 to 3.3 seconds depending on tool weight (#50, up to 59.5 lbs.)

A combination of large-diameter bearings and slideways, and a high-precision NC rotary encoder, has improved rotational run out accuracy.

y Constant AccuracyTo meet the customer’s expectation for unsurpassed reliability, each component has been designed and engineered to achieve accuracy, maintain precision and provide a long service life. A variety of features guarantee constant accuracy in repeat production or continuous machining. Four front spindle bearings reduce vibration during high-speed spindle rotation. This stabilizes the characteristic frequency of the spindle, improves machining accuracy and prolongs tool life.

Spindle vibration: 2 µm (15,000 min-1) *Measured value

Covers on X and Y-axis do not conduct heat generated by cutting to the bed and can minimize thermal impact.

An optional sensor for heat displacement compensation in the spindle directly measures the Z-axis position of the spindle, and stabilizes the positioning accuracy by feeding back the measured result to the CNC.

Ballscrew CompensationA heat displacement sensor on the X, Y and Z-axis ballscrews directly measures any growth caused by heat generation and feeds back the measurement result to the CNC. The positioning accuracy of each axis is then stabilized automatically. The sensor unit is environmentally friendly because it does not require cooling oil.

This function measures X and Y dimensions and determines reference planes A (Xaxis) and B (Yaxis). Then it executes the program relative to those.

Automatically makes compensation by using the measured value as the compensation value.

Touch SensorThe integrated spindle Touch Sensor is a time-saving alternative to traditional spindle probes for locating workpiece surfaces. Providing the material is conductive, the optional Touch Sensor eliminates the need for an extra tool change to call up a probe.

When the tool comes in contact with the material, the gap elimination function drops the feedrate to the programmed speed.

Reliability FactorMachine reliability is improved by adapting field-proven technologies. Key elements of dependability are:

Patented Replaceable Spindle Taper: The integrated, cartridge-type spindle is lubricated by the highly reliable oil-air method. It is environmentally friendly because it requires less oil and has a smaller cooling unit.

Spindle clamping spring: The special coating on the spindle clamping spring reduces friction and wear to provide a longer life of 4 million cycles.

Long-life ballscrew: Improvements in the design of ballscrew nuts reduces wear to extend performance.

Center TroughThe FH-S Series machines feature dual Z-axis ballscrews on each side of the table. The ballscrews, linear guides, and optional linear scales are all located outside the machining area.

Chips fall away from the part and directly into a wide center trough under the spindle. This frees the operator from troublesome disposal of chips accumulated in the machine. Since the coolant is immediately collected into a tank, the axis feed mechanism and machine bed are not subjected to heat from the coolant and chips.

3-Point LevelingThe massive cast iron bed, designed through careful structural analysis, incorporates the three-point support model. It is built to support rapid axis movements while maintaining constant accuracy over a long time.

Operator Support FunctionToyoda’s OP Supporter software improves productivity by reducing setup time and enhancing tool and pallet management.

Tool management functionsPallet management functionsMaintenance functions

The maintenance screen allows the operator to identify the location and check the live status of subsystems such as pallet changer, B axis and tool magazine.

All data for tool management is on a single screen. OP Supporter shows the 8-digit tool code, plus tool offsets with geometry for wear and diameter. Tool life can be predicted with the optional adaptive control. To optimize performance, speeds and feeds are selected from a tooling database, not the part program. The speed of the tool change is adjusted according to the weight of each tool.

OP Supporter searches any given range of programs for the required T numbers. The tooling list is then compared to the current magazine layout to confirm tools required, list tools that are not needed and show which are needed but missing from the magazine.

Fanuc 31iThe Fanuc 31i CNC delivers high-end features for a wide range of production and job shop environments. It adopts the Field Bus, which is a network allowing control devices such as PLC, PC, and sensor actuators to be easily connected with each other. This network permits cable savings and increased reliability.

A wealth of preventative maintenance information is displayed on the CNC screen. By selecting the advanced machine diagnostic function (option), it is easy to pinpoint the cause of machine failure.

Coupler TypePressure is supplied from the machine top or pallet and the number of ports can be increased according to the fixture clamping method.

An optional hydraulic system can be selected from the following types as needed for securing hydraulic fixtures.

Note: In some cases overhead hydraulics may reduce the available work envelope. Contact your Toyoda representative for details.

Distributor TypeA distributor with 8 ports is located at the center of the pallet changer and is used for actuating the hydraulic fixtures on the pallet.

Through - Pallet TypeThis type of hydraulic system allows the hydraulic or pneumatic pressure to be supplied through the table inside the machine and to the fixture. This design is optimal for material handling systems (FMS).

Expanded Tool StorageThe Matrix-style magazine is an alternative to the 60-pocket (opt 121) chain-type magazine. The modular unit stores up to 504 tools delivered to the work area by a high-speed servo-driven transfer mechanism. The operator can load tools in a fully secure set up rack without interrupting magazine operation.
