    Space, place and social justice in education Reminder and notice of deadline extension from Jan31st to Feb 17th!

    One day international seminar, Education and Social Research Institute, ManchesterMetropolitan University, UK, Friday 13th July 2012

    By way of a reminder:participants will have an opportunity to hear internationally acclaimedkeynote speakers whose work is concerned with questions of space, place and social justiceand to take part in dialogue and discussion around presented papers. Those offering paperswill have their contributions considered for publication in a book-length edited collection to

    follow on from the event.

    Extended call for papersPapers on all aspects of space, place and social justice will be considered for inclusion in theprogramme, but those which focus upon the following themes will be particularly welcome:

    Interactions between geography and ethnography around social justice Relationships between global and local spaces of education Impacts of space and place on educational inequalities New spaces and places of education Policy encroachments on places and spaces of education Spaces and places of education protest Theoretical conceptualisations of space and place

    We recognise that many of these themes are inter-related, and presenters are encouraged toexplore these intersections in their proposals. Each paper will be around 6,000 words in length

    Professor Valerie Walkerdine School of Social Science, Cardiff University.Professor Danny Dorling Professor of Human Geography, University of Sheffield.

    Plenary respondent: Professor Jan Nespor, Ohio State University

    UPDATE: This seminar, which is jointly sponsored by theEducation and Social Research Institute (ESRI) atManchester Metropolitan University, the European EducationResearch Association (EERA), the British EducationResearch Association (BERA) and the journal Ethnographyand Education, is generating a lot of international interest,with abstracts already received from established scholars and

    new researchers from around the world! To make sure weachieve the broadest discussion of questions of space, placeand social justice in education we have extended thedeadline for receipt of abstracts to FEBRUARY 17th

    and that presentations on the day should last for 20 minutes. Postgraduate research studentsare particularly encouraged to submit proposals.

    To propose a paper, please email the following [email protected]: proposedtitle and an abstract (350 words maximum), name, institutional affiliation (if appropriate), postaladdress, and email contact. All abstracts must be received by the extended deadline of17th

    February 2012. Please note: if an abstract is accepted the full paper will be required by 31stMay for electronic distribution to all those attending the research seminar. Notice ofacceptance of proposals will be emailed by the end of February.

    FeesStandard delegate fee: 110; Student fee: 90 (both inclusive of lunch and refreshments).

    Bursaries for travel, accommodation and attendanceA number of bursaries will be available. EERA are offering eight bursaries (of up to 400 Euroseach) to help cover conference fee, travel and accommodation for established scholars and

    new researchers (offered in the first instance to those from Low Gdp countries). The journalEthnography and Educationis also offering a bursary to support conference fee, travel andaccommodation for a contribution based on an ethnographic research project. The BritishEducation Research Association (BERA) Special Interest Group in Social Theory andEducation are also offering three bursaries to cover registration fees (offered in the firstinstance to members of that special interest group). Specific conditions for the award ofbursaries vary and will depend on the strength of an individuals case for support.
