SPA Visioning Workshop 2010

The Singapore Physiotherapy Association (SPA) will be having the 4th Visioning Workshop from 10th to11th April 2010.   The workshop is themed

’SPA Visioning 2010: Transforming Today’s Physiotherapy for Tomorrow’

The SPA conducts a Visioning Workshop every 5 years to chart the directions and focus of the SPA and the physiotherapy profession in Singapore. This year’s Visioning Workshop is aimed to:

1) Explore the various needs of the Singapore population as well as the Physiotherapy profession itself,2) Explore the strategies to meet these needs, and3) Outline the new challenges facing our profession, especially in terms of registration and recruitment. For effective Visioning, we would need you along with other physiotherapy members to participate in this workshop, where your opinions, suggestion and ideas will be able to contribute the aims of the Workshop. As the physiotherapy profession and numbers have grown and will be growing further in Singapore, we need physiotherapists from all areas and settings to come in and share their ideas, especially the community and private settings. We have also invited guests, Mr Jonathan Kruger, Manager of Policy and Professional Standards Division in the Australian Physiotherapy Association, and Dr Margot Skinner, AWP executive member of WCPT from New Zealand.  They will be able to share with us how their professions and associations grew, as well as the challenges and experiences with registration of the profession.  We sincerely hope to see you at the workshop, as the time have come for physiotherapists in Singapore to gather and map out our future directions.  We look forward to seeing you at the Visioning Workshop! Please register at [email protected] or contact our administrator at +65 97957535.

WCPT Press Release Programme details for World Physical Therapy 2011 announced

18 March 2010 For immediate release

Speakers from all corners of the world will be contributing to physical therapy’s biggest world gathering, to be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, next year. The World Confederation for Physical Therapy, which holds an international Congress every four years, announces the first main programme content and speakers this week.

The programme will include 18 different focused symposia featuring top level speakers from each of WCPT’s five regions. The focused symposia form a major part of WCPT’s Congress programme, and each one will deal with an issue of global relevance to the profession, whether in the field of practice, research, education, management or policy. Details of the newly announced focused symposia, including presenters, are provided in the attached sheet.

“We’ve been delighted at the number of high quality proposals we’ve had for focused symposia,” says Ann Moore, Chair of WCPT’s International Scientific Committee, which has responsibility for putting together the programme for the WCPT Congress. “It’s meant that we’ve been able to select the best speakers, addressing topics that physical therapists all over the world want - and need - to know more about.”

Focused symposia have become increasingly popular at WCPT Congresses. Each is organised by a convenor, who leads an international group of presenters through thematically linked and research-focused presentations. The symposium ends with key take-home messages for practice, research, education, management and policy, with international relevance. Each symposium lasts one and a half hours, with at least half an hour for discussion with the audience.

They are central to WCPT’s priority of making its Congress as inclusive as possible, says Ann Moore. “We want a programme that will attract practising physical therapists as well as researchers and educators. They will be able to attend workshops, courses and discussions which complement the scientific programme, and will allow them to take away new skills.”

The views of physical therapists themselves have been fundamental in shaping plans for the Congress. In 2008, more than a thousand physical therapists responded to a WCPT survey asking them about the issues that interested them the most.

More information Further details about the symposia and the programme for World Physical Therapy 2011 can be found at: http://www.wcpt.org/congress/fs Please contact Tracy Bury if you have specific queries: [email protected]

The Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) and our members as individuals are increasingly engaging in robust public policy discussions about the future of our health system.

These discussions are often occurring at the health service level where physiotherapy departments now have to advocate for expansion of their services and to gain improved funding. The skills required for these advocacy activities are not generally taught as part of the physiotherapy entry level education so they have had to be learnt – and they have to be learnt fast.

This seminar will help outline the practical steps involved in developing an effective advocacy strategy for Singapore physiotherapists with reference to the Australian experience in advocating for change on behalf of the physiotherapy profession over the last two decades.

AimTo undertake a seminar with representatives from the Singapore Physiotherapy Association in relation to advocacy – both at a national level and a local service level.

Target AudienceThis seminar would be appropriate for experienced managers as well as physiotherapists who have recently assumed a senior clinical or management position and are now required to advocate for physiotherapy within their service.

ObjectivesUnderstand the key steps in developing an advocacy campaign including the following:

• Developing policy • Developing stakeholder engagement strategy• Developing media / publicity strategy•

About the speakerMr Jonathon Kruger graduated in 1996 with a bachelor degree and obtained his Masters of Public Health in 2001 from the La Trobe University, Victoria. He is presently the National Manager in Policy and Professional Standards Division at Australian Physiotherapy Association (Melbourne).

Mr Kruger has over fourteen years experience in the Australian public health system including senior management roles, lobbying, formulating advocacy campaigns and developing policy and programs aimed at enhancing the health and wellbeing of all Australians.

He has been sharing his experience and expertise with his highly developed public speaking and advocacy skills attained through participation at parliamentary committee hearings, seminars, invited lectures, workshops, television interviews and panel discussions.
