WHO’S AT RISK? CAREGIVER DISTRESSSARATOGA COUNTY - Self-Assessment Tool Helps Saratoga, Washington and Warren counties -Area Families Avoid the Dangers of Caregiver Distress. In response to this growing issue, the local Home Instead Senior Care® office has launched a public awareness campaign – Family Caregiver Stress Relief at FamilyCare-giverStressRelief.com – to help family caregivers determine if they are at risk for distress and to minimize problems before they escalate. I’m still impressed at how quickly the days get shorter this time of year. We’re losing daylight at a rate of almost 3 minutes a day! It adds up day after day. There are signs of fall everywhere. The asters are just beginning to flower in the meadows. The cats are more interested in visiting with us overnight now. There’s dew on the windshield and lawn every morning. I’ve noticed the Monarch Butterfly migration is in starting up. The hummingbirds will be gone soon. All these are indications that our glorious growing season will be coming to a frosty end. You would think that this would be a quiet time for gardeners. Not at all! There will bulbs to plant and it’s a great time to plant trees and shrubs that are on season end clearance at the garden centers. Cool weather makes it a great time to catch up on any lingering landscaping projects. Most of us have more time to devote to garden tasks this time of year. In spring, with all the preparation for the vegetable garden, raking the lawn and other pressing chores, it can be hard to find time to keep up. Rainy spring weather can also make it difficult to accomplish all you wish to. Many of the gardening chores that you’d normally think of doing in spring can actually be taken care of now. One task that I like to tackle in now is the dividing and transplanting of perennials. Most of our perennial flowers are just about finished for the season. They go dormant as frost approaches. This is a great time to make improvements and adjustments to our flowerbeds and borders. You may have underestimated how large a plant would get and need to move it. You may have some perennials that have become mature and need to be divided. This is a great time to take advantage of cool, crisp “work weather” to get a jump on next spring. For instance, I’ve got some daylilies and hosta that are in need of dividing. It is a good idea to have the new location ready to receive your transplants before you lift them from their present spot. Dig you holes and add you soil amendments. The most important soil additive is bone meal. Bone meal (as I’ve stated many times before) provides phosphorus to promote a strong, healthy root system and it lasts in the soil for several years. If you have sandy soil, the addition of compost or peat moss will improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture. Next, slice all the way around the plant you wish to divide with a sharp spade and lift it from the soil. If you’re simply moving it to a new location simply plant it and water it in well. If you need to divide the plant, simply slice the clump apart (as with hosta) or gently pull the clump apart (as with daylilies). Sometimes this seems a bit brutal but remember, most perennial plants NEED to be divided every few years to remain healthy and vigorous. Remember your gardening friends when you’re dividing your perennials. I always set a few small divisions aside to share. My friends share with me so, there’s always something new for all of us to enjoy. You might not think of it but it’s also a good time to purchase and plant potted perennials. The selection of perennials won’t be as good at the garden center in fall as it is in spring and summer but what there is will undoubtedly be on sale. I’ve got some great bargains by being willing to poke through the perennials at the garden center in fall.

“THE STONE THAT STARTED THE RIPPLE”SARATOGA SPRINGS – A play dramatizing a modern-day

reunion of four suffragists, written by local author Patricia A. Nugent, will be performed on Wednesday, August 26 at 7pm in Filene Hall at Skidmore College. August 26 is National Women’s Equality Day designated by Congress in 1971, a fit-ting date for this performance. “The Stone that Started the Ripple” is a humorous yet historical representation of a re-union of the women who initiated the crusade for women’s right to vote. Using their actual words from the 1800’s, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, and Lu-cretia Mott offer commentary on the status of women’s issues today. A cast of five women, directed by Lezlie Dana, brings these important historical figures to life. The one-act play has been performed six times previously to sold-out audiences. It has been updated and expanded by Nugent as the political landscape for women has changed over the years. All pro-ceeds will benefit the League of Women Voters of Saratoga County. Tickets are $15 each. To reserve a seat, send a check to Saratoga County League of Women Voters, 4 Blue Spruce Lane, Ballston Lake NY 12019. Tickets may also be ordered di-rectly online at the LWV website, www.lwvsaratoga.org For more information, including group sales, call 877-8874.

(MS) — Perhaps no aspect of life has gone untouched by technology in the 21st century. Technology has changed the way we com-municate, how we watch television and listen to mu-sic and even how we keep abreast of the latest happen-

ings in our communities and abroad.

Technology is also chang-ing the way we drive and, in many ways, making to-day’s highways more safe. While automotive gadgets like built-in WiFi or backup cameras may be the fi rst

amenities to grab our at-tention, new developments in lighting technology are enhancing driver visibility and making it safer to hit the open road.

Many auto manufacturers still use standard incandes-cent bulbs in their vehicles.

But advanced lighting that’s more befi tting of today’s technological standards can make it easier for drivers to see and be seen by fellow motorists. Vision LED Lights from leading automotive lighting manufacturer Phil-ips employ cutting edge

LED technology to deliver better and more dynamic lighting for applications such as brake and taillights, back up lights, side markers, fog lights, and license plate lights. Guaranteed for up to 12 years, Philips Vision LED Lights are highly resistant to extreme heat and vibration, meaning drivers are very likely to replace their vehicle long before they ever need to worry about replacing their LED lights.

The right lighting can vastly improve driver visibility and safety and prove a wise in-vestment for drivers who want to see the road better while making themselves more visible to other motor-ists. In addition to upgrading their vehicles’ lighting, driv-ers can take the following steps to ensure they’re see-ing the road ahead of them as clearly as possible.

• Get vision checkups. A standard ophthalmic exam is a series of tests conducted to check an individual’s vi-sion and the health of his or her eyes. The National Insti-tutes of Health note that the frequency of such tests de-

pends on an individual’s age, but drivers should know that they should get screened more frequently as they age, and the NIH notes that driv-ers who wear contact lenses

need yearly eye exams. Driv-ers who suspect their vision might be making it harder for them to see when behind the wheel should schedule an ophthalmic exam imme-diately.

• Take steps to improve your reaction time and that of your fellow motorists. Per-sonal reaction time also can infl uence how drivers see the road and how quickly they react to potentially negative driving condi-tions. Making sure you get enough sleep and exercise can increase alertness and improve your reaction time. In addition, the choices you make when upgrading your vehicle can improve the re-action time of your fellow drivers. For example, Phil-ips Vision LEDs’ instant-on response make sure brake lights come on the mo-ment you apply the brake, instantly alerting other driv-ers should you be forced to make a sudden stop. That instant response time can reduce braking distance by up to 20 feet, even at speeds as high as 75 miles per hour.

• Prioritize complete ve-hicle main-tenance. No vehicle main-tenance rou-tine is com-plete unless it includes regular clean-ing of head-light lenses, sideview mir-rors and inte-

rior glass and mirrors. Dirty mirrors and glass compro-mises driver vision, so be sure to periodically remove any debris or fi lm buildup on such surfaces.

SAFE SCHOOL CARPOOLINGStudents have a few diff er-ent options to get to and from school. In areas where school bus service is pro-vided, children have an easy way to get to class each day. But if no bus service is avail-able, students must be driv-en to school by their parents or neighbors.

Busy parents frequently ban together to form carpooling teams to ensure students get to school on time. Car-pooling is eco-friendly, con-venient and can foster stron-ger relationships between students and the parents of those students. Sharing rides also can be fun for kids and motivate them to get out the door so they can see their friends.

Safety should be a priority for carpoolers, and drivers can take the following steps to ensure kids get to school safely.

• Know the laws regarding safety seats as they pertain to age, weight and height.

• Each child will need to ride in a seat that is appropriate and shortcuts should not be taken. If there isn’t room in the vehicle to sit all chil-dren comfortably and in the proper restraint, then you must reduce the number of passengers in your vehicle.

• Children should ride in the backseat of the vehicle as a priority. Many kids can be safely moved to the front seat around age 13.

• Instruct children to remain in their seats until the car has come to a complete stop. Only then should they remove their seatbelts.

• Make sure students enter and exit the vehicle on the curb side instead of on the street side.

• Instruct passengers to keep

their hands and heads inside of the vehicle. If necessary, engage child locks on doors and windows.

• Do not leave a child alone at an empty home in the af-ternoon. Wait until you see a child go inside his or her home before you drive away.

• Keep the radio low and minimize distractions while driving others.

Carpooling is a great way for parents to share the respon-sibility of getting kids to and from school.
