The snow is finally just about melted off the lawn and our long winter will begin to fade away. It is a little too early to do much with the lawn other than rake up the debris. While there may not be much we can do for the lawn this early, we can take care of the most important aspects of lawn care that is also the most overlooked; soil pH testing and lime applications. During my years in garden retailing, I’ve noticed a reluctance among residential turf specialists (you who care for the lawn) to pay attention to soil pH. Many are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on lawn food and moss controls but will dig in their heels when asked to spend a couple of bucks on a simple soil pH test kit. Go figure. I guess it sounds too “complicated and scientific” or something. We’re not talking hours of research in a laboratory here, just a thimble full of soil and one test tube. The benefits of properly adjusting the pH of the soil and the benefits of limestone itself are far reaching. I could carry on for pages about nutrients in the soil (or from the fertilizer you pay good money for) being “bound up” and unavailable to plants because of acidic soil. I could write reams on how the microorganisms that “feed” your lawn die off in soils with a low pH. I could rant and rave about how important calcium and magnesium (from limestone) are in formation of plant fiber or how osmosis (the ability of plant to draw moisture from the soil) is impeded in acidic soil. Let’s just say, its VERY important. Here’s the deal. There’s a tendency for soil to gradually become acidic over time. Decomposing organic matter (grass clippings in the case of your lawn), fertilizer and acid rain all contribute to acidification of the soil. In heavier soils like clay, this happens very slowly. In looser soils like sand, acidification occurs more rapidly. The more fertilizer and organic matter you apply to your lawn or garden, the more often you should check the pH. Different plants prefer different pH levels. Most vegetables grow best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5 to 6.8) while your lawn will be healthier if the soil is neutral (pH 7). Every once in a while I run into someone who’s heard that lime is good for the lawn and they’ll ask, “I’ve got an average size lawn and I’ve never limed it. How much lime should I apply?” To the uninformed, this seems like a reasonable question. To me, it’s like asking your mechanic, ”I have a mid-sized sedan. How much oil do I need to add?” There’s no way your mechanic could answer unless you allowed him/her to look at the dipstick. The inexpensive soil pH test kit is your “dipstick” to determine how much lime you need to apply for healthy plant growth. If I’m asked, “I have 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn and the pH is 6.0. How much lime should I apply?” I can then say that you need 10-40 lb. bags of pelletized lime to bring your soil’s pH up to the pH of 7.0 that it should have. Of course, you may not need to ask since the information is provided in the pH test kit. Unlike fertilizer applications, you won’t need to apply lime every year. Usually every 3 to 5 years, maybe even longer depending on the type of soil you have. Another benefit of checking and properly adjusting the pH of the soil in your lawn is the control of moss. I’m not telling you that lime applications will kill moss if it’s already established itself in your lawn but if you’d paid attention to the soil’s pH all along you probably wouldn’t have a moss problem to begin with. Moss won’t take hold and thrive unless the soil is acidic. Once it gets established, moss causes the soil in the area it’s growing to become acidic even faster; creating an environment that allows it to spread quickly. The net effect is that the moss kills off the grass by making the soil too acidic and then fills in the bare area that’s left. The whole situation can be avoided by checking and adjusting the soil’s pH regularly. Remember, too much lime will make the soil too alkaline for the grass to thrive so more isn’t better. The bottom line is this: you can spend a few bucks for a pH test kit and you’ll end up using less lawn food and have a healthier, more disease and drought resistant lawn while spending less. pH test kits are one of the best bargains going. Thanks for the read.

ELIMINATE AUTO ODORS(NAPS)—When the smells of mud, slush, cigarettes, pets, food spills and so on linger in your car, you can drive them away if you know a few facts and hints.

While common air fresheners use perfumes to try to cover up the smell, they provide only temporary relief that doesn’t of-ten cover the entire vehicle. To truly eliminate odor, you have to control the cause.

To that end, there’s an odor eliminator that uses ClO2 tech-nology. It controls odor-causing bacteria, eliminating even the foulest smells quickly and permanently.

The EPA-registered, patented technology of Star brite Auto Odor Eliminator is easy to use. Its deep-penetrating vapor gets into all areas of your car’s interior—under seats, into the upholstery and throughout the ventilation system—and works within hours. It’s also a great way to remove odors from RVs or boats that have been in seasonal storage.

Once you’ve eliminated bad odors, keep your car smelling sweet: Vacuum it whenever you wash it; make sure there are no food wrappers, cigarette butts or dirty clothes lying around; and don’t let anyone smoke in it.

DEFEATING SALT DAMAGE

(NAPS)—Corrosive road salt and brine on the roads can cause rust and corrosion to your car, truck, motorcycle or trailer—but there are steps you can take to protect your vehicle. Try these three tricks:1. Wash and wax your car and then use sealant to keep the wax on the paint.2. Seal the undercarriage, too.3. Clean your car off with a product engineered to eliminate salt deposits from all surfaces, yet still be easy to use. One such is a formula originally developed to protect and preserve fi shing and dive gear on boats that are constantly exposed to the ravages of salt water, and includes highly eff ective salt-removing components and protective PTEF polymers. After the salt and brine have been eliminated, these polymers bond to the treated surface to act as a barrier against future deposits. Called Salt Off with PTEF, it’s made by Star brite. It won’t harm fi berglass, plastic, rubber, paint or polished metals and is available as a ready-to-use 22-oz. sprayer and as a concentrate in 32-oz. and gallon containers.

Your car can take quick corrosion with a grain of salt, if you heed a few hints on protecting it from salt.

SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE AT THE PUMP

The cost of fuel dipped in 2014, but drivers are still looking for ways to spend less at the pump. For many drivers, that means driving less. Driving less will save money, and doing so also reduces fuel consumption and contributes to fewer emissions entering the air, both of which can benefi t the environment. But many drivers are unable to drive less, as commit-ments to work and family require them to get behind the wheel more often than they might prefer. Such driv-ers may be looking for ways to reduce their fuel costs, and fortunately there are several ways to do just that.• Reconsider your choice of fuel. Many of today’s auto manufacturers now design their vehicles so they can run smoothly on regular un-leaded gas, which is typically listed as “87 octane” at fi lling stations. That’s important to know, as regular gas is often considerably less expensive than alternatives that are higher octanes. Many driv-ers may even choose regu-lar unleaded, but opt for premium gas every third or fourth trip, feeling that the higher octane fuel every so often will increase per-formance of older engines. But many engines are de-signed to run smoothly and effi cient on low-octane fuel, meaning it’s unnecessary to choose premium gas, even if you only do so once in a blue moon. Read your ve-hicle’s owner’s manual to determine the best fuel for your car.• Buy when the time is right. Prices at fi lling stations fl uc-tuate on a daily basis, so un-less your car is running on empty, avoid fi lling up when the prices seem especially high. Some patience may pay off with several dollars in savings, and those savings can add up to a signifi cant amount of money over time.

• Become a less aggressive driver. Drivers with hectic

schedules tend to be more aggressive when behind the wheel. But driving ag-gressively is unsafe and po-tentially costly. When driven at speeds that exceed 55 miles per hour, vehicles lose fuel economy. According to the California Energy Com-mission’s Consumer Energy Center, driving 55 miles per hour instead of 75 miles per hour can reduce fuel costs by as much as 75 percent.• Remove unnecessary weight. A car trunk might seem like a great place to keep your golf clubs, and it may be tempting to leave that roof rack on top of your car after a recent camp-ing trip, but such unneces-sary cargo in or on your car

makes it harder for the car to get from point A to point B. That forces the car to con-sume more fuel. Unless your immediate plans include hit-ting the links or hunkering down at a nearby campsite, remove unnecessary weight from the car so your next trip to the gas station is less ex-pensive.

The cost of fuel can make trips to the fi lling station into costly excursions. But drivers willing to recon-sider conventional wisdom and change their driving habits can save substantial amounts of money over time.

The MONEYSAVER and The PENNYSAVER PROVIDE A Closer Look at ...

Rising heating and cooling costs motivate homeowners and building contractors to search for ways to makebuildings more economical to heat and cool. Those who make insulation upgrades save hundreds, oftenthousands annually. Frequently, even the most highly efficient heating and cooling units will seem inadequatewithout proper insulation. During this winter, the Northeast reached record breaking low temperatures forextended periods of time. Ice damming and icicles on homes and businesses was far worse than it’s ever been. These occur when heat from inside a home escapes through poorly insulated roofs and eaves. This costly eventmeans property owners are essentially heating the outdoors! There are other costs as well. When snow meltsdue to poor insulation, water from the melted snow will re-freeze at the eaves creating ice dams and icicles. Asthe ice builds up it can lift shingles creating a path for water to enter the home. The result is damage throughblistering paint, destroying sheet rock or plaster, even rotting the buildings frame. These problems are avoidable!Traditional insulation materials such as fiberglass or cellulose have cold R-Value ratings. This means that when thetemperature drops, they perform at a much lower R-Value. Lower R-Value = more warm air heating the greatoutdoors! The probability of costly repairs related to this freeze- thaw cycle is likely to eat into your summervacation budget! When you see icicles and ice dams forming on your home or business, it”s a huge indicatorthat your energy dollars are literally going through the roof. Consider using spray foam insulation to seal theareas where heat escapes. The R-Value of spray foam insulation does not reduce when the temperature drops.

Unlike traditional insulation, spray foam doesn’t deteriorate. Spray foam provides consistent performance for year round results reducing both heating and cooling costs. Hi, I am Dave Collandra. I’ve been a spray foamapplicator in the capital region for over eight years. During this time, I’ve had success solving problems like ice dams and drafty homes, significantly reducing the highcosts of heating and cooling bills. It’s likely that serious insulation problems are damaging your home and your wallet! Insul-Tech Energy Solutions can keep youwarmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
