Did you know that as well as being here for you, we also support local schools and businesses?

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers, especially those who voted for us in the 2013 Business Excellence Awards, we are pleased to announce we won the Customer Service Award! We are so chuff ed and feel this refl ects our ethos ‘we provide an old fashioned service in a modern world.’

We have always tried to accommodate our customer’s needs and wants and so due to popular demand we are now opening earlier and closing later on Wednesdays and Fridays to allow those of you who work to visit us.

We have also launched a Facebook page - for those of you who don’t use Facebook

but would like to know how, we are preparing a social media training session just for you. Please contact us if you would like to be part of this exciting event. Facebookers can fi nd us at: www.facebook.com/TheITShack….click on 'like' to receive discounts and special off ers, it will make us happy too!

We are an IT company who, unlike others, won’t try to sell you things you don’t need. We listen to what you use your laptop or computer for and advise on equipment which will be just right for you. We can also help to fi nd you a new or second hand computer at the right price, so you can spend what you've saved on something else you need such as a printer.

We have three engineers so there is always someone for you to talk to. You can have a dedicated engineer visit you in your home or in most cases it is much cheaper for your computer to come and stay with us. You can deliver or we can pick up. A one-man band is no longer the cheaper option

thanks to our state of the art workshops.

We don’t use technical language either to confuse our customers, we are proud of what we do – we don’t try to hide it by speaking in a language you won’t understand.

We fi nd 80% of our customers have a perfectly fi ne PC which is running a little slow therefore our full MOT and valet service will get it running like new. Why waste money buying a brand new computer?

Running a Business? We will be arranging an informal "no sales" evening soon with food and drink for businesses to learn about Wi-Fi, broadband, networks and new technologies. We will also have Spire FM and the Anx Agency from Salisbury to help you with websites, marketing, Facebook and web videos for your business. Visit our website or Facebook page for news and off ers.

A top to toe aid for child development

Participating in a pre-school music and singing class encourages many important developmental skills for your child suggests Jayne Roderick, Music Bugs Salisbury & New Forest. ‘Music and singing classes are much more than just a ‘musical experience’ as your child will learn and develop a range of important skills that will help to equip them for school and beyond’.

Language and communication skills – singing songs is a fantastic way to boost early language skills and encourages important elements of language development. Children learn to rhyme words and sounds, repeating songs and helping them as they begin the early stages of reading.

Numeracy skills – number songs introduce children to the concept of counting. Singing counting songs with your child helps them to recognise numbers, patterns

and sequences within their immediate environment.

Fine and gross motor control and coordination – young children use movement and sensory exploration to learn about their environments. From picking up instruments and dancing with puppets through to waving the scarves and popping bubbles, Music Bugs gives children a chance to move, develop and grow with confi dence.

Sensory experiences – Children utilise 4 main ‘processes’ to engage and interact with their environment: Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic and Tactile. Music classes provide children with the opportunity to be constantly seeing, hearing, touching and ‘doing’ – an all-round sensory experience for your child.

Confi dence, social skills and independence – Music and singing classes help children to start making decisions for themselves within a safe and informal environment. Encourage your child to select their own instrument from

the tub for example, but allow them to develop their own preferences and give them the freedom to move around, explore and interact with other children and parents.

Music Bugs classes are great fun with lots of wonderful activities and props to engage your child and keep them entertained. Suitable for babies from newborn and older children up to the age of 4, the classes create a sensory and holistic environment where they can develop and socialise at their own pace. Expect traditional nursery rhymes, silly songs, action songs, knee bouncers and fi nger play rhymes as well as puppets, hobby horses, bubbles, pom poms, parachutes, teddies, chiff on carves, rhythm sticks and lots of lovely tactile percussion instruments.

Contact Jayne Roderick on 0844 578 1042 or email [email protected] for details of classes in Salisbury, Downton, Verwood, Hordle and Fordingbridge. Free taster sessions available.

The 2013 Clarendon Way Walk provides the perfect challenge for the whole family to take part in. The event allows participants to choose between a 26 or 12 mile walk between Winchester and Salisbury Cathedrals. The 12 mile route begins in the village of Broughton, half way along the Clarendon Way and at the midpoint between the two Cathedrals.

Naomi House has launched the event earlier than usual and is calling on people to sign up soon and secure their place alongside hundreds of other walkers, all showing their support for the children’s hospice and the work the charity undertakes to support children, young people and their families.

Event Fundraiser Felicity Patterson commented: “The 2012 walk raised over £100,000 and we hope 2013 will do even better. It is such a great event for all involved and the money it raises is an invaluable contribution to the £7 million required to keep Naomi House and jacksplace

Local Hospice launches

running each year.”

For more information on the walk, contact Felicity Patterson on 01962 843513 or email [email protected]. To register online, visit www.naomihouse.org.uk/events/showevent/clarendon-way-walk-2013.

Gardening

Grow Your Own VegAs the new gardening year is upon us, why not have a go at growing your own veg because it doesn’t need to be diffi cult and has the potential to be one of the most productive and fun things you’ve ever done.

by Pippa Greenwood

Home grown food tastes better, uses little if any air miles, can save you

a packet and is enormously rewarding because you’re getting the top end of the market produce. Remember to grow what you like and what your garden can grow well - this may take some experimenting, but don’t be afraid to admit that some things are trickier than others in your plot.

If you’re an organic gardener or you simply want to produce pesticide free vegetables, you might need to spend more time thinking about what to grow and how you can best nurture it so that pests, diseases and other problems take a back seat.

*Seed and plant catalogues are now more likely to let you know which varieties are relatively pest or disease resistant.

*You can also encourage some of the naturally occurring insects that parasite or predate upon the garden pests, or bigger animals such as frogs, toads, hedgehogs and many birds. Insects include:

Ladybirds: The larvae and the adults both consume huge numbers of aphids.

Lacewings: The young or larvae

are brilliant predators, eating mainly aphids, but also eating other pests such as thrips and eggs of moths.

Hoverfl ies: The soft-bodied yellowy grey larvae are great aphid eaters, a single one eating up to fi fty in a day, nearing 1,000 in its lifetime.

Ground beetles: Often seen scuttling off at speed when you move pots, low-growing plants or loose slabs, they are mostly black and often shiny and are brilliant predators of many pests including slugs, vineweevils and some insect eggs.

Solitary wasps: Some feed their larvae on aphids, weevils and other insects.

Some of these may already be in your garden, but by growing some suitable plants you can really build up their numbers. On the whole the simple, non-double varieties are the most insect friendly, so try some of these:

*Phacelia: A hardy annual with bluish perfumed fl owers, perfect for direct sowing.

*Limnanthes douglasii (the poached egg plant): This yellow and white fl owered hardy annual is loved by hoverfl ies.

*Eschscholzia (the Californian poppy): This pretty yellow, orange and cream fl owered plant can be direct sown and thrives in sunny well-drained sites.

*Iberis (candytufts): One of the easiest hardy annuals, it has readily available pollen and nectar, perfect for many benefi cial insects.

The rewards are plentiful - a regular supply of superbly tasty vegetables, picked when ripened to perfection (not just to make them last longer on the supermarket shelf ), gathered as and when you need them and in the quantities you need (cutting down on wastage) plus you can choose the varieties you fi nd tastiest.

Why not grow some great vegetables in 2013? Go to www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ – choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables sent to you at just the right time for planting and each week you receive an email from her telling you all you need to know to ensure great results. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free e-book on organic gardening, and buy a hand-picked selection of garden products.

The Moot in Downton reaches its silver anniversary this year and

is holding a special event to celebrate the milestone on June 16th.

Four years ago, High Jinks in the Moot – the hugely successful event that marked the Moot’s 21st year since it was purchased by a village preservation trust and saved from years of neglect – attracted more than 1500 people.

Bowing to popular demand for it to be repeated, High Jinks in the Moot is back with more music, dancing, drama and magical moments than before.

Once again, every corner of the ancient monument and pleasure gardens will have

something happening from brass band music and maypole dancing to children singing and community choirs.

Watch out for gnomes fi shing in the pond, living statues and Alice chasing the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole to Wonderland.

Dozens of local performers have signed up to take part and professional actress Jane Seden is again masterminding the spectacular event.

Refreshments include a Pimms tent, cream teas, barbecue and licensed bar and the afternoon will run from 2pm until 6pm.

For more information, visit

MORE HIGH JINKS TO MARK MOOT’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY

Bassets were pleased to meet the head gardener of St Thomas’s green

spaces Sara Getley, in order to present a cheque for two folding wheelbarrows.

St Thomas’s house is let out to many diff erent local charities and organisations in addition to the community groups like the Friday Cafe, and the garden provides a place to relax and enjoy. The gardens are maintained by a small group of volunteers and the daff odils are just starting to bloom despite the poor weather.

However, garden waste disposal is a problem with so many mature shrubs and fl ower beds, and so wheelbarrows, bins and other equipment are very much needed. With St Thomas’s being a registered charity (number 1133882) any support you can give is very much appreciated.

We at Bassets are proud to support our local communities and would recommend a visit to the beautiful garden. The gardeners are currently growing plants to sell on May 25th so fi ngers crossed Spring actually arrives.

These days, we’re doing more and more things digitally: our holiday snaps sit on hard disks, our music is often in MP3 and we’re as likely to download fi lms as buy them on disc. That’s great when your PC’s working perfectly, but how do you make sure it stays that way?

Protecting your PC falls into three key categories: protecting your valuable data, protecting your PC from online threats and protecting your PC from physical damage.

Protecting the hardware is the easy bit. Surge protectors can prevent nasty spikes in the electricity supply from causing any damage, and if you have a laptop you can buy a Kensington Lock to secure it to something suitably hefty. A compressed air canister can blow dust out of fan vents and debris out of keyboards, and it’s a good idea to keep your PC away from extremes of temperature - a sunny room in summer is a terrible place to keep a PC. Be particularly aware of potential spills: liquid can destroy computers and you won’t believe the damage a tin of baby food can do to a keyboard. It’s a very good idea to keep food and drink and PCs separate.

No matter how careful you are, computers can and do break: every hard disk will

wear out eventually. That’s why it’s really important to keep backup copies of anything important such as family photographs, home videos or iTunes downloads. You can do this in several ways - using an online service such as Mozy (www.mozy.co.uk) or Skydrive (skydrive.live.com), by burning them to DVD or by copying them to an external hard disk, but remember that if your backup is in the same place as the original, a domestic disaster such as a burst pipe might ruin both of them.

It’s worth remembering too that services such as Facebook won’t compensate you if they accidentally delete or damage your online photo libraries; once again make sure that if it’s important, you have more than one copy in case of disaster.

The other issue to worry about is “malware”, which is software designed to do nasty things. Sometimes malware spies on you, trying to obtain your passwords and other details; other times it just damages fi les or slows your PC to a crawl. The good news is that it’s relatively easy to avoid: Windows 7 and Windows 8 both have fi rewall software, which can prevent nasties getting in, and if you’re suspicious you can avoid most malware. Don’t open unsolicited

email attachments from people you don’t know, and don’t let fake emails from the bank fool you: your bank will never send you programs or zipped documents in an email.

Always make sure you’re downloading from reputable sources, such as Microsoft.com, not Big Dave’s Totally Honest Download Page and make sure your web browser software is up to date. Old browsers are a real security risk.

Last but not least, invest in some security software. You don’t need to spend any money - Microsoft’s Security Essentials is free (www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/), as is AVG Free anti-virus (free.avg.com) and AVAST (www.avast.com), and there are also free tools to tune up your PC. One of our favourites is CCleaner (www.piriform.com/ccleaner), which works miracles on sluggish PCs, and we’d also recommend the free Ad-Aware program (www.lavasoft.com) to prevent annoying software setting up shop on your PC.

Keeping your PC safe isn’t diffi cult, time-consuming or expensive, but it’s worth doing. Think of PC protection like home insurance: you hope you’ll never need it, but if disaster strikes you’ll be glad you have it.

Recipe

Cheese, Bacon & Onion PieMakes 8 Slices Ready in 1½ hours, plus chilling

Perfect for a simple lunch or for an early summer picnic this savoury pie has a really rich and buttery crisp pastry and a tasty smoked bacon and onion fi lling. It tastes just as delicious warm or cold. Look for packs of smoked bacon pieces near the bacon rashers in the supermarket or use fl avoursome Italian diced pancetta instead.

Pastry:• 225g plain fl our• 1 tsp mustard powder• Pinch of salt• 115g butter, chilled and

diced• 4-5 tbsp iced water

Filling:• 175g smoked bacon pieces• 4 onions, peeled and thinly

sliced• 1 tbsp sunfl ower oil• 200g mature Cheddar

cheese, grated• Beaten egg, to glaze• Tomato salad, to serve

(see Tip)

Tip: Serve simply with a fresh tomato salad made by thickly slicing ripe vine tomatoes and layering with fi nely chopped spring onions and a few fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with a little olive oil and season with freshly ground black pepper.

To make the pastry, sift the fl our into a large bowl and stir in the mustard powder and salt. Add the diced butter and rub into the fl our between your fi ngertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.Stir in enough of the iced water with a round bladed knife to mix to a crumbly dough. Knead very lightly until just smooth then fl atten into a disc and wrap in cling fi lm. Chill for 20-25 minutes.Meanwhile, prepare the fi lling. Dry-fry the bacon pieces in a large non-stick frying pan for 4-5 minutes until just golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the oil and sliced onions to the pan and fry gently, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes until the onions are very tender and pale golden. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190°C, 375°F, Gas Mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.Roll out just over half the pastry on a lightly fl oured surface and use to line a 20x30cm loose-based fl uted fl an tin. Layer the bacon, onions and grated cheese in the pastry case and season between the layers with freshly ground black pepper.Roll out the rest of the pastry and use to cover the fi lling. Seal the edges of the pastry with water then pinch them tightly together with fi ngertips. Trim off any excess pastry.Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and pierce 3-4 holes in the top of the pie to allow the steam to escape. Bake on the hot baking sheet for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with tomato salad, if liked.

Is Your Head Banging?

Whether you wake up with a banging headache or it develops as a dull ache throughout the day, a headache can be more than just a pain in the head – inconvenient, and at times debilitating.

Thankfully most headaches aren’t dangerous, but understanding what type of headache you have and what’s causing it will help you when it comes to choosing treatment.

Why does my head hurt?A headache is caused when the blood vessels around the brain swell, along with tension in the muscles and nerves in surrounding muscles. If you’re stressed, not having enough sleep, drinking too much, dehydrated or eating lots of junk food, there’s more chance you’ll end up with a blinder.

Eye strain, blocked sinuses, a change in body temperature or blood pressure and hormonal changes are other known triggers. Headaches can also result from a cold virus or other health condition. If you’ve suff ered a blow to the head or have a rash accompanied with a headache, always seek medical advice.

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and

feel as if someone has stretched a rubber band around the top and side of your head. The pain is normally more constant compared to the throbbing ache you may experience with a migraine, which can cause vomiting and sensitivity to light.

Cluster headaches tend to cause an intense pain around one or both eyes and can come on very suddenly. Suff erers may have 1-3 of these attacks every day for weeks or months which are often more painful than a migraine.

Brewing up a headache Found naturally in tea, coff ee and chocolate and added to many energy drinks, it’s more the withdrawal of caff eine than the stimulant itself that can lead to headaches. On the fl ip side, non-prescription painkillers with added caff eine can actually speed up their eff ectiveness.

Treating your headache You can buy a range of diff erent painkillers over the counter or obtain stronger alternatives on prescription. Some may suit you better than others – they include paracetamol, codeine, anti-infl ammatory painkillers (such as aspirin and ibuprofen) or a group of anti-migraine medicines known as triptans (for example, sumatriptan).

It’s recommended that you don’t take painkillers for more than two days at a time – if you do, you may be at risk of developing ‘medication-overuse’ headaches.

Natural Remedies

As well as improving your general lifestyle (more sleep and exercise, less booze and stress) try the following:

1. Essential oils: either use them for massage or add them to your bath. Recommended oils include Lavender, Clary Sage and Roman Chamomile. (Not suitable for pregnant women).

2. Cooling headache pads: For some instant soothing relief, use these alongside any other medication or on their own.

3. Tiger Balm: this is a natural remedy that is often used to help relieve headaches. (Not suitable for pregnant women or children under 2.)

4. Headache pillows: these may help prevent or relieve headaches by providing support to your neck, improving your posture and reducing infl ammation.

5. Acupuncture/massage/refl exology: all of these alternative therapies can be extremely eff ective at relieving a nagging headache.

More than 10 million people in the UK suffer from regular headaches. But how do you know what type of headache you have and what the best treatment is?

Finance

Ignorance is NO Defence

In my parents’ day, money was a simpler matter. In many families they went to work, earned their money, paid their taxes and saved what they could. When it came time to buy a house, they approached the bank manager to see if he would be kind enough to lend them three times the husband’s salary (the wife stayed at home looking after the children) for a repayment mortgage which was paid off over 20 or 25 years before he got his fi nal salary scheme pension.By the time I started earning money, it had become much more complicated. We were two people paying the mortgage needing much higher salary multiples to aff ord rising house prices. Then came the ending of MIRAS, the emergence of interest only mortgages and endowment policies to pay them off (or not as it turned out in some cases). Pensions became more complex too, with choices for opting out of SERPS, private pension schemes, money purchase schemes and fi nal salary scheme pensions became a distant memory for most.Throw in the scandals of mis-selling of endowments and PPI to name just two, and it’s clear even for my generation the fi nancial world has become a confusing place. Hedge funds, derivatives, swaps – even the so-

called experts struggle to make sense of it.The common thing throughout all these generations, my parents, myself, our children, is that none of us have ever had any fi nancial education. Not one single lesson in the classroom at my school was ever devoted to personal fi nancial matters. The fi nancial company employees are taught how to sell to us, but we have little idea of how to make a judgement on what they tell us.At last, this should be about to change. In 2011, 118,000 people signed an e-petition via the MoneySavingExpert.com website to force the issue of Financial Education in Schools to be debated in Parliament. Draft proposals have been published recently and are still under consultation into April, but it is expected that from September 2014, fi nancial education will form part of the national curriculum in England, with 11-16 year olds receiving it as part of their compulsory citizenship education.Plans are that pupils in Key Stage 3 (ages 11 to 14) will be taught the function and use of money, personal budgeting, money management and a range of fi nancial products and services.

From 14 to 16 in Key Stage 4, they will be taught about wages, taxes, debt, credit, fi nancial risk plus more sophisticated fi nancial services and products. The Government wants students to have “the fi nancial skills to enable them to manage their money on a day-to-day basis as well as to plan for future fi nancial needs.”It is clear that the lessons are long overdue. You only have to look at how much the fi nancial world has changed in the last 40 years to see that what is needed (and will hopefully be taught in schools) is a good grounding in the ‘basics’ of understanding personal fi nance. It is to be hoped that the generation that receive this education realise that their learning will need to continue long after they leave the classroom as the fi nancial world continues to evolve. If knowledge is power, having the right fi nancial knowledge will help our children avoid the mistakes with money we may have made along the way, and that can only be a good thing. In the meantime, pass on what you know already Mums and Dads, and a free Teen Cash Class is available at http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/Teenagers-cash-class.

Taking professional fi nancial advice is advisable, but your own education is essential

The Forward-Thinking FortiesThere’s nothing new under the sun, according to Shakespeare, and who am I to argue? Sometimes, all we need is to adjust our perspective. Take the 1940s, for example - were things really so different?

Now: Twitter offers 140-character minimalist communication.

Then: Morse code. Nothing but the essentials, and with an option to retweet using a hand-held device known as a transmitter.

Now: A gap year or two to travel the world, experience new cultures and test your courage.

Then: National Service. All of the above plus a regular wage.

Now: Wikipedia allows anyone to find out everything about anything.

Then: The Public Library (remember those?) did that as well, and you also left the house.

Now: The War on Terror. Then: The War.Now: Recycling. Then: The Rag & Bone man. Now: Mobile phones - talk wherever you happen to

be.Then: Telephone boxes - conveniently placed almost

everywhere you might need to be. And the battery never runs out.

Now: Upcycling. Then: Make Do and Mend. Now: Going green and growing your own veg. Then: Dig for Victory. Some things are different, of course. According to the lovefoodhatewaste website we throw away over seven million tonnes of food from our homes every year, whereas, in the 40s, people didn’t have enough to eat. And, while there were fewer antibiotics back then, they didn’t have MRSA or the Norovirus. Maybe we need the best from the past to shape the future. Matron!
