Dig over your soil to the depth of your spade’s blade. It’s excellent for blowing away the cobwebs. 2. Improve your soil by adding compost or well-rotted manure. 3. Apply fertiliser when the soil is moist and water afterwards. 4. Ideal sowing depth is around twice the diameter of the seed you are planting, but check the packet for instructions. 5. Keep soil damp until the seeds have germinated. 6. Seeds will not germinate unless soil temperature is adequate. Check the packet for best planting times. 7. Thin out at the two leaf stage to ensure young plants will not be overcrowded, leaving the strongest seedlings to mature. 8. If germinating seeds in a seed tray, use a good seed raising mix. Place trays in a warm place and use cling wrap to create a mini greenhouse - on top of the hot water tank is ideal, or on a sunny windowsill.
