NALG Members are invited to join us Presidents’ Day Weekend February 16-18 (Saturday through Monday) for the Annual Battle in the Desert. This is the ideal time for a high season trip to the desert to enjoy great weather, golf and the many activities available in the Coachella Valley.
We have selected a new venue for the matches, the picturesque Escena Golf Club in Palm Springs. The Escena Golf Club is an outstanding Jack Nicklaus Design course with vistas of the Coachella Valley and San Jacinto Mountains. The course was redesigned in 2009. In 2010 it was rated number 6 of the top 10 public courses in California. Escena has a good mix of water hazards, bunkers and wide manicured fairways with no houses or roads on or through the golf course. Five sets of tees ranging from 7173 to 5541 yards makes it an enjoyable challenge for golfers at all levels of the game. The 18th hole finishes over water and can be viewed from the shaded Club House patio. We invite you to visit the Escena Golf Club Website www.escenagolf.com where you’ll find a gallery of pictures of the golf course.
The format will be 3 days of Match Play: Best Shot (a combination scramble and alternate shot developed for the JCC), Four Ball and Singles. Teams will be made up geographically of players from the North and South.
The players package entry fee of $385.00 includes: 3 rounds of golf with cart, range balls, closest to pin at all par 3’s each day, welcome reception, player’s dinner and awards luncheon, Golf Shop merchandise credit and a special rate for practice rounds. Guests are invited to attend all social functions.
By popular demand we are planning on another special evening of entertainment for the players and their guest at The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies. In addition to the Follies there will be plenty to do off the course for players and guests alike: Guest Golf, Downtown Palm Springs Village Fest Thursday evenings 6-10pm, Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, Palm Springs Desert and Air Museums, Shopping, Great Restaurants, Casinos and the famous Palm Desert Flea Market.
With plenty of warm sunshine and blue skies as lefties battle it out for three days of team match play, it just doesn’t get any better. What a great way to start the annual Lefty quest for Fairways and Greens. We hope to see you in February.
Lefties who are interested in participating are invited to contact Wally Coffman by phone or email: 925-699-6942 or [email protected].

A 2013 JCI may be possible thanks to our friend and JCI colleague Jan Johansson. Jan and Anette Ternstedt have provided us with two proposals to stage the event in Belek, Turkey. The Matches are scheduled for the week prior to the WALG Championship which is set for September 7-14. To move ahead with the Matches a minimum of 12 players per team is required.
The JCI will either be hosted by the Five Star Cornelia Diamond Golf Resort and Spa or the Five Star Sirene Belek Golf Hotel. The course for the Matches at the Cornelia Resort will be the Faldo Course and for the Sirene Hotel the PGA Sultan Course.
There has been a changing of the guard at the JCI. Once dominated by the U.S. the International Team has taken charge with two straight victories 2010 and 2012. The U.S. Players will have their work cut out for them in their quest to reclaim the cup following the disheartening 59½ to 60½ loss in Scotland.
We are pleased with the parity of the Matches. Both the 2010 and 2012 the Championships were decided by the final Singles Match. We look forward to more exciting finishes in the future.
If you are interested in participating in the James Cup Events and would like to be added to the email list please contact us by emailing at: [email protected]. We are blessed as lefty golfers. When it comes to competitions and camaraderie we have it all: State, Regional, National and World. Take advantage and support Lefty Golf to preserve its unique spirit and tradition for future generations.
