It was great to be back at the pot-luck last month, the first I have been able to attend this year. The theme was Mother’s Day, for which Michelle assembled a display table, provoking a number of comments. Several people spoke about their mothers, giving an insight into what an

important and formative role this person has to play in our lives. Thanks to Brianna, who danced as Tweetie Pie for us, ably assisted by Gypsy as Sylvester the cat. A quiz was held, new people were welcomed and it was a very pleasant evening for all. By the time this newsletter reaches you, the Annual General Meeting will have happened and our new committee will be announced elsewhere in this newsletter. Congratulations to those successful candidates, I am sure they will work well together for the good of our organization. We

look forward to another successful year. There are still large numbers of new foreign students coming into Invercargill to study. Please help them all as much as you can, and tell them they are welcome.

As we approach the beginning of winter, I hope you are all planning to keep warm and healthy during the colder months. And I look forward to seeing you all at the next pot-luck gathering. Hopefully, I will see some of you before then at my birthday celebrations. Remember you are warmly welcome to share in my birthday (no presents please) the afternoon of Saturday and Sunday June 5 and 6 at 237 Bowmont Street, Invercargill. Southland Multi-Nations Council Inc. is an incorporated society and is registered under the Charities Act 2005. Donations of $5 or more are eligible for a donations rebate from the Inland Revenue Department. A GST receipt will be issued so you can claim the rebate.

WANTED: Does anyone have some children’s books in good condition in Tagalog they would like to donate to Southland Multi-Nations? Perhaps your children have got older and they no longer read them. We are hoping to have a collection of children’s books in Tagalog which people will be able to borrow.

Do you have any CDs or DVDs with ethnic music which you would like to donate to Multi-Nations? These would be played at potluck dinners. You can take these to the office or bring to a potluck. Thanks

Greetings to everyoneGreetings to everyoneGreetings to everyoneGreetings to everyone June is beginning of Matariki, the Maori New Year. For many Maori, Matariki signals the begin-ning of a new cycle of life and a time to reflect on the previous year. This month President Brian is reflecting on 70 years and is having a two day birthday party at Queen’s Birthday weekend. On Saturday and Sunday afternoon, June 5 and 6 you and your family are

invited to visit and have a piece of cake with Brian and his family. Each year at the Annual General Meeting the membership fee is set for the following year. The membership fee has been $10 for many years. At the AGM on May 24 it was decided that the membership fee to join Multi-Nations would increase to $15 per year per family. June 19 is the next potluck dinner. Hope to see you there.

Volunteers needed to help again this year at

Kidzone July 7-12, 10am to 3pm @ James Hargest Hig h School This is a children’s holiday programme which has now become a yearly event. Last year we

organised activities there for the children to do and we have been asked to again provide activities and crafts from other countries for the children. Last year we had 21 volunteers from Multi-Nations to help which was great. If you can help for even a morning or an afternoon that would be a big help. We are planning to show the children how to use chopsticks, origami, and make a simple paper kite (easy pattern provided). Thanks to those who have already offered to help, but I still need more helpers please. If you’d like to know more please contact me at the office or talk to me at the potluck in June. We will have a meeting of volunteers towards the end of June to learn how to do the various activities so we can show the children. I’ll let everyone who has volunteered know when we will have that meeting.

Change to Citizenship forms The New Zealand Citizenship Office has new forms for applying for citizenship. There are three forms: • An Adult form (tan) for applicants 16 years and older • A Child form (blue) for applicants under 16 years of age • A Samoan form (green) for all Western Samoan applicants, including adults and children. There are two application guide books that accompany the forms: one for the Adult/Child forms and one for the Samoan form. The guides provide information on the relevant requirements for applicants and give step by step instructions on how to complete the forms. A separate guide and application form was developed for Samoan applicants as they are assessed under different legislation due to New Zealand’s special relationship with Samoa. The new forms came into use on 10 May 2010. Contact the Citizenship Office on 0800 22 5151, or at citizenship@dia.govt.nz to request the forms, or if you have any queries about the new material. You can also download the forms from the Department of Internal Affairs website: www.dia.govt.nz

This is so popular in Nelson that we thought we would have a similar event here in Invercargill. Frosts and winter weather are moving in and this is the time when annual leave is due

and all those lucky Filipinos’ are flying home to the hot humid temperatures and their families. Meanwhile back here the wood supplies are being stocked up and winter clothing sales are being sourced.

It’s also time to renegotiate your next year’s contract – Every employee, whether working full time or part time, must have a written employment agreement. This can be either an individual agreement or a collective agreement.

Individual employment agreements are negotiated between individuals and their employer and bind only those par-ties. A collective agreement is negotiated between a registered union and an employer. A collective agreement is only binding on employees that are members of the union and whose positions are covered by the coverage clause of the collective agreement. There are some contents that must by law be included in employment agreements, and there are also a number of minimum conditions that must be met, regardless of whether they are included in agreements. Employment law also provides a framework for negotiating additional entitlements. Kids Korner

One Saturday recently I looked out the glass sliding doors of our house and there was a fantail flitting around the verandah. The cat, Whiskers was lying on a cane chair on the verandah sleeping in the sun. He opened one eye and gave the fantail a sleepy, can’t be bothered look, and went back to sleep. I was very glad about that. When I was little if there was a fantail nearby when we were in the garden my mother would make the same sound as the fantail and it would come and sit on her hand. I thought that was special. • The Maori names for fantail is Piwakawaka • The fantail/piwakawak has a long tail compared with the rest of its body • The tail opens into a fan which is how it got its name • Its broad tail helps it to change direction quickly when hunting for insects
