the “Keeping it Green Team”, is available to ulfll any volunteer duties that

might be needed by non-proft organizations in the communities it serves

(see Event Participation sidebar, page 20). With an emphasis on children, education and the neediest individuals in the community, SWS and Sun

Recycling have partnered with a number o organizations throughout their

service area by making donations, along with giving volunteer hours o service

and complementary waste removal and portable restroom services. The many

organizations SWS supports include: the Boys and Girls Clubs o Broward and

PalmBeach Counties,Nicklaus Children’s Charities,the QuantumHouse,

the Broward Partnership or the Homeless, Broken Star, The Gul Stream

Council o the Boy Scouts o America, the Girl Scouts o South East Florida,

AllSaintsSchool,St.Christopher’sCatholicChurch,L.I.F.E.,theAmericanCancer Society, Susan G. Komen or the Cure, Cystic Fibrosis, Palm Beach

County Public School programs and the Catholic Dioceses o Palm Beach.

SWS also participates in community programs, acilitates tours o their

recycling acilities, provides recycling event containers and portable restrooms

or special events and ully supports any educational or community project

with a ocus on oering sustainable programs. SWS assists in organizing

recycling programs and donates recycling event boxes to dozens o charities,

schools and churches rom Miami to Vero Beach; they are in the process o

creating the SWS Recycling Merit badge – Gul Stream Council o the Boy

Scouts o America.Servant leadership and giving back have been a way o lie or the ounders

o SWS. They eel that being engaged in and supporting the communities

in which they live and do business is vital or all businesses. In addition,

they see their customers as partners in the community and support them in

their charitable endeavors whenever possible. A strong ocus on customer

satisaction and serving others, has kept them strong in the current economy.

Still Going Strong

With a drop in the construction industry, the condition o the currenteconomy has aected SWS; however, the company is continually expanding

their opportunities by ocusing in on other commercial industries that have

recycling needs. SWS works to fnd new markets or their recycled products,

although it is an ongoing challenge. “So many o us are stuck in our ways and

won’tstepoutoftheboxtotrysomethingnew.Luckilywearendingpeople

are seeking the use o recycled products and it has opened markets we never

knew existed,” says Charles Gusmano, Co-Founder and CEO.

Constantly engaging in research and development and fne-tuning their

recycling processes, SWS processed nearly 3 million cubic yards o materials

and sent only 462,000 yards to the landfll in 2008. That equates to an 84

percent recycling ratio. With modifcations to their systems, SWS is now, just

10 months later, recycling at close to a 95 percent rate in the West Palm Beach

acility. “When we started in this industry nearly 30 years ago, we never imagined

thoseratesbeingattainable,”explainsLomangino. “Ourfocusisonrecycling

or zero waste and the rates we are achieving today are moving us to that goal.”

Inturn,manystatesarebecomingmorefocusedonstatewiderecyclingrates.

For example, the state o Florid has set a goal o 75 percent recycling by the

year2020. Accordingto Lomangino, thisgoal isattainableaslong as the

conditions are in place to reely encourage and allow the recycling to takeplace. “Construction and demolition material is nearly 40 percent o the total

waste stream and in order to attain the goal, the materials must be recycled.

We are actively participating in the process to hit the goal.”

Committed to their employees and the communities they serve, SWS is

looking orward to a long and mutually rewarding uture as well as a healthyplacein theeconomy.StressesLomangino.“Wearealwayslookingforthe

opportunity to branch out into new markets, especially in high growth areas.

We know that our expertise and commitment to recycling can beneft many

communities and we welcome the opportunity to partner and serve them.”
