SOUTHERN VERMONT COLLEGE
B E N N I N G T O N , V E R M O N T W W W . S V C . E D U
Maybe you already have a vision for
the future. You know you want to
work in healthcare, the legal field or
business. You want to be a writer, a
radiologic technologist or a psychologist.
You’re interested in environmental
issues, politics, management or crimi-
nal justice. Maybe you’re still thinking
about your options. Your college
education should give you the
perspective, skills, knowledge and
experience you need to move ahead.
Southern Vermont College offers
the kind of education that helps you
achieve your goals. Here, on our
beautiful mountainside campus over-
looking the town of Bennington,
Vermont, we’ve created a different
kind of college—one that is focused,
thoughtful and personal. It’s real,
vibrant, down-to-earth—and a lot
more affordable than you might
imagine. It’s a place where your
professors are teachers first, people
who will know you—what you can
do, what you need to succeed, who
you want to become.
At SVC, we want to see you succeed.
We want to foster your aspirations,
help you achieve your goals—and
then go even further. The whole point
of an SVC education is for you to
surprise yourself and discover what’s
possible for you.

Welcome to the next big step in your life.
LOCATION,
LOCATION, LOCATION
SVC might be in one of
the best locations in the
nation—in the mountains,
in southwestern Vermont,
close to other colleges, in a
lively college town, and just a
few hours’ drive from several
major cities: Albany (less than
an hour away), and Boston,
New York City and Montreal,
all just three hours away.
THE PRICE IS RIGHT
Southern Vermont College
is one of the most affordable
private colleges around.
When you really look
at costs closely and
consider all the expenses,
we’re even competitive
with many public insti-
tutions. In addition,
a robust financial aid
program helps more than
80 percent of our students
fulfill their college dreams.

WE’RE ON A MISSION: TO HELP OUR STUDENTS SUCCEED, REACH THEIR GOALSAND MAKE A DIFFERENCE.start
We believe a college education is the most important investment you make in your life—not only financially, but also in terms of hard work and time. We think the experience should reflect
that reality, that it should open doors for you, create new possibilities for your life, transform you as a thinker, a leader and a citizen.
We believe in fun, too. Excitement, time for reflection and relaxation, sports, friendship and community—these are essential to becoming a thoughtful, compassionate, educated person. Still,
learning must always come first—rich, deep and relevant learning that gives you the foundation youneed for a successful future. SO, WHAT DOES THIS SMALL COLLEGE IN SOUTHERNVERMONT HAVE TO OFFER AND IS IT THE RIGHT PLACE FOR YOU?
“LIFE’S MOST PERSISTENT AND URGENT QUESTION IS:WHAT ARE YOU DOING
FOR OTHERS?” –Martin Luther King, Jr.
“I love my book. It’s so personal and it’s
such a great tradition. It tells you so
much about what kind of place this is.”
–Joe Frey, Communications major
A SPECIAL TRADITION
OF TWO GIFTS
At SVC, every incoming student
receives the gift of a thought-
provoking book. Open it
and you’ll see it’s signed
by every member of the
SVC community, includ-
ing staff, faculty and
administration. When
you graduate, you’ll receive
another book—also signed by every member
of the campus community. These are the bookends of
your SVC education.
HOME SWEET HOME
MANY OF OUR CLASSES ARE HELD IN THE EVERETT
MANSION, A WONDERFUL SPRAWLING MANSION BUILT IN
THE EARLY 1900s FROM VERMONT GOLDSTONE.
PRACTICAL!
Edward Everett, the American industrialist who built the
mansion that houses SVC today, was the maker of the very
practical “Lightning” fruit jar (among many other things)
—a breakthrough in food storage at a time when there were
no refrigerators, supermarkets or zip lock bags.
OPTIONS
SVC offers 21 majors, 16 minors and more than 260 different
courses each year—more than enough to fill your schedule.
On the off chance that there’s something you want that we
don’t offer, SVC students can enroll in courses at nearby
colleges at no additional cost. Our reciprocity agreements
also allow other area students to enroll
in SVC’s classes.

EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME
We believe that education ought to be personal—that you
should feel like you’re part of a close community. Here, you’ll
recognize people when you go to dinner. You’ll have friends
who are in classes other than your own. When you go to a
basketball game, you’ll know most of the people in the stands
and on the court.
THE MOUNTAINEERS
THE SVC MOUNTAINEERS ARE SERIOUS NCAA DIVISION III
ATHLETES—BUT OUR SIZE MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR MOST
STUDENTS WILLING TO PUT IN THE WORK TO HAVE THE
OPPORTUNITY TO BE PART OF A TEAM.
MOOSE-A-PALOOZA!
In between studying management and criminal justice,
writing history papers or studying for bio exams, SVC
students take time out for fun. One of the most popular
campus traditions is Moose-a-palooza—a spring festival
of music, dance and fun!
“In my class, we learned
about the challenges of
rural healthcare, then
brainstormed possible solu-
tions for our population. By
the end, I had new skills in
accounting, marketing and
research and a bunch of new
friends. Plus, it was great to
do something that had an
impact—it gave me a new
perspective on the value of
my education.”
–Scott Menard,–Psychology major
NURSING EXCELLENCE
SVC’s Nursing students have
achieved an outstanding
National Council Licensure
Examination (NCLEX) pass
rate. In 2008, 100% of first-
time candidates passed.
maTHE LIBERAL ARTS. Why does it matter if you want to be a nurse or an entrepreneur orwork in criminal justice?
We believe that a liberal arts back-ground—the courses you take inhumanities, the arts, literature, his-tory and the sciences—transformsyou into a sophisticated thinker, aproblem-solver, a visionary, a leader. It makes you a better writer, asmarter speaker, a thoughtful teamplayer. It touches the compassion in your heart, inspires your courageand ignites your desire to make a difference. The liberal arts make us all more human—and moreinteresting human beings.
Let’s not forget, however, the real and serious demands of our com-plex world. We also want you to be practical—to develop valuable skillsand become a person who can make things happen.
Know what you want to do? Whoyou want to become? What if youtook it to the next step? WHY NOT ASPIRE…?
ENTREPRENEURSHIP &
MANAGEMENT/BUILD
THE ENTERPRISE
Do you have an idea for a
business? Why not start it as
part of your college experi-
ence? Southern Vermont
College’s “Build the Enter-
prise” program guides
students in applying the
concepts learned in their
studies to creating and
running a business of their
own. Your enterprise could
be in retail, technology,
agriculture or health care.
How’s that for real world
learning?
WRITING AWAY
We know that people struggle
with writing, but strengthen-
ing your writing skills may
be one of the best things you
can do for your career. Most
majors have communications
and writing components. At
SVC, you will be challenged
to write in all your courses. In
addition, we offer a variety of
writing-intensive courses and
majors—communications,
journalism and a very popular
creative writing program.
Extra help is always available
in our Success Center.

that will allow them to
become more successful…
faster!”

‘
SVC’s professors—teachers, writers, thinkers, scholars, researchers, lawyers, inventors, entrepreneurs, scientists, artists and nurses—make it a point to know their students well. They notice how hard you work, whether you’re makingprogress, if the subject has you engaged. They see it as their job to offer guidance and mentorship.Rushed through the reading? They’llnotice. Stuck on a math problem? They’ll help. Having a bad day? They’ll listen.
MOST OF ALL, THEY BELIEVEIN YOU. THEY KNOW HOWFAR YOU CAN GO—EVENWHEN YOU HAVE QUESTIONS. “What’s most interesting or rewarding about teaching at SVC?
I especially like that every student is provided with individu-
alized support. At SVC every student has the opportunity to
become successful.”
–Sylvia L. Jimison, Success Center
“I try to open the world to my students, intellectually, politi-
cally and socially—to help them understand that the whole
world is wide open to them. I try to help them to imagine a
world of great possibilities and to appreciate their own intel-
ligence and capabilities.”

“I teach psychology at SVC and one thing that psychologists
know is this: never say ‘I can’t’—even when the work is chal-
lenging. Too often, ‘I can’t’ is the first step towards failure. At
SVC, we want our students to exceed their own expectations.
The more each of us expects of ourselves, the more we will
strive and succeed.”
–Scott Stein, Social Sciences
“I always tell my students to work hard and consistently rather
than cramming, to believe in yourself, and keep yourself healthy
and rested for optimal performance. I encourage them not to
be afraid to ask questions, to question what they do and why.
I remind them they are on a wonderful journey and that they
will always be learning new things.”
–Susan O. Sykas, Nursing
“I chose to work at SVC because of its entrepreneurial spirit. I
have been given enormous freedom to innovate and design a
program which is grounded in professional practice, respon-
sive to contemporary management, and second to none in
terms of meeting students' interests and needs.”
–Charles Crowell, Build the Enterprise/Business
MOST UNDERGRADUATES IN THIS COUNTRY EXPERIENCE education from the back of a big lecture hall. Wethink about education differently at Southern Vermont College. Instead of large lecture-based courses, weoffer smaller classes, usually with an average of 16 students—large enough to have many interesting pointsof view, but still small enough so that you’ll know everyone fairly well by the end of the semester. We thinkeducation should be rooted in conversation, in back-and-forth, give-and-take.At SVC, when you have agood idea, people will notice. Professors recognize when you’re putting in the effort.
LEARN YOUR WAY. We know that everyone learns differently. Some students do better holed up in thelibrary lost in thought, while others learn better if they can talk with friends. If you’re the kind of personwho does better when you are engaged, when you’re a more active and even hands-on participant, whenyou can get feedback quickly, we encourage you to call, email or plan to visit. LET’S TALK!
A THEMED LECTURE SERIES
We don’t all learn in boxes. What makes education useful is being
able to connect the dots. That’s the idea behind SVC’s annual
lecture series. Speakers from very diverse fields come to campus
and speak on the same theme: The Lessons of Leadership Series,
for example.
FROM THE TOP
From some of our classrooms, you can see the town of Bennington
below. The third largest town in Vermont, Bennington is filled
with interesting things to do—from movie theaters and museums
to clubs and eateries. SVC students also enjoy internships and
part-time jobs in the area medical center, clinics, courts, law offices,
and technology firms, and the surrounding area offers some of
Vermont’s best hiking, skiing, snowboarding and fly-fishing.
ROVING PROFESSORS
Change it up. Shift perspectives. Think in different ways. To help you figure out what this really means
and why it’s important, SVC selects a few “roving professors” who teach in a variety of courses for
short periods of time. Experts and scholars, they cross disciplines and bring new points of view,
lead projects and join you in discussion. A visiting pharmacology professor might drop in on nursing,
psychology or computer science classes, while an artist might engage students in mathematics,
photojournalism or history.
9
ROOM WITH A VIEWAT SVC, MANY OF OUR CLASSROOMS AND SUITES INOUR RESIDENCE HALLS COME WITH INCREDIBLE VIEWS.IMAGINE LOOKING AT THIS EVERY MORNING!
WHAT DO COLLEGE STUDENTS DO ALL DAY?For many SVC students, it’s the firsttime in their lives they’ve lived awayfrom home for any extended period. This means learning how to organizeyour life so you have time for work, for studying, for sleep and for play. You’ll learn new skills, self-discipline and the value of balance. If you’re havingtrouble with anything—YOU’LL FIND PEOPLE EAGER TO HELP.
MICRO ECONOMICS
At the core of your scheduleis your course work. SVC students typically take fouror five courses a semester, which allows for more depthto the work and a little moretime in the classroom.
11
MAD HATTERS
The Mad Hatters are SVC’s student drama organization. They stage regular perform-ances in the Everett Theatre that draw notonly crowds of students, faculty and staff, but also area residents.
CORE REQUIREMENTS
Yes, we have a few and they’ll definitelychange your point of view. In addition tocourses in your major, every BA/BS candidatetakes basic courses in the humanities, historyand politics, environmental issues, naturalsciences, philosophy and ethics, and the social sciences. We also require courses incomputing, economics and effective speak-ing. The result is a well-rounded liberal artsbackground that gives you the tools andknowledge to be part of the critical issues ofour time—whatever career path you choose.
STUDENT SERVICE
The Student Activities Squad (SAS) is one ofSVC’s most popular student organizations, and provides opportunities to give a littleback. Students work with the Coordinator ofStudent Programs to develop an array of activities to enhance the college experience:club sports, midnight bowling, comedians, live music, off-campus trips, service learningprojects and more.
WEEKEND FUN AND RELAXATION
When you have some of the world’s best skiing and snowboarding less than an houraway (18 resorts within 90 minutes), it’s hard not to get caught up in the fun.
MEET CHRIS.AND STEVE.AND MATT,ALINA AND ROXANNE.Meet the sophomore from Texas and the senior from Tibet. Meet the New YorkCity nurse and the programmer from Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. They aregoing to be like family while you’re here. You’re going to see them in your classes, walking down the hill to your residence hall and at the movies. You’ll sit withthem at dinner and at breakfast if you get up early enough. You might study withthem for finals. They’ll know you and who you want to be. On the last day ofclasses, at the traditional Moonlight Breakfast, you will appreciate the impact theyhave had on you. They’re your friends and they’ll be your friends. FOR LIFE.
AT EASE
What do SVC students do for fun? If you like your fun
organized, you can find all kinds of activities organized
by the residence halls, from movie nights to day trips.
SVC students are also just as likely to hang out in small
groups in each other’s rooms. If you like your fun on a
larger scale, check out the campus calendar for info on
trips to Boston to see the Red Sox, all-campus parties
and celebrations and special events.
THE SUITE LIFE
SVC students enjoy suite life in our residence halls. A Community Advisor helps out with any
residence life issues and acts as a big brother or sister. The residence complexes also offer laundry
facilities, cable television service, in-room Internet access and 24-hour computer labs. New
students are required to live on campus; older students may eventually choose off-campus living.
GET ORGANIZED
With more than 20 clubs and
organizations on campus, you’ll
find the right match for you.
Write for the paper, direct a play
or lead an expedition. Organize
a speaker series, create a budget
or negotiate a contract. Student
organizations at SVC help you
acquire and practice a wide
variety of skills, build an inter-
esting resume and meet new
friends.
GET GAME
SVC offers 10 NCAA Division III teams and plays in the tough New England Collegiate Conference
—we even have a few championship trophies in our display cases. That’s a lot of game for a small
college, and it doesn’t stop there. Many of our students describe themselves as athletic, but
even those who don’t play on a team can be found enjoying the fresh Vermont powder, racing
the trails on their mountain bikes and rock climbing and hiking in the Green Mountains.

“I started interning at the local radio station, WBTN, my freshman
year and now I’m co-hosting a two-hour drive-time show. We play
music, read the news and invite guests to talk with us about various
subjects. The experience taught me a lot of practical things about the
field, and it’s been an amazing experience for me careerwise. I hope
to continue in communications as a journalist and a writer.”

“I’m doing an internship at the Center for Restorative Justice in Bennington—working on the new website
and representing CRJ in various programs such as Tobacco-Free Community Partners. TFCP works to
prevent first-time tobacco use among young people. I’ve learned a lot about what it takes to create
change in society, and I can see that the insights I’ve gained here will be important in whatever career I
choose.”
–Garrett O. Vogel, Midlothian, VA, Criminal Justice
INTERNSHIPS
We encourage students to undertake internships informally
or formally, as part of their course work. Some internship
experiences can earn you college credit. We can help you find
an internship where you’ll build new skills and knowledge or
help you plan an experience with an organization or company
you already know.
“I’m interning at a local
center for elderly residents.
Being a nurse is an important
job—you have to be smart,

to know that his or her nurse
is caring, compassionate and

more rewarding than knowing
that you can help someone in
his or her time of need.”
