Dear Early Head Start Staff,

Today we celebrate the beginning of a new Early Head Start program year!

I know you are all excited to greet new children and families and extend a warm EHS welcome to everyone. I am looking forward to visiting EHS centers this week to help with some orientations, meet families and observe our caring and skilled teaching staff in their classrooms.

I am so happy that we have the oppor-tunity to show families what a powerful, positive impact a caring, consistent and secure environment has on their chil-dren’s development. You are the ones that make that environment happen eve-ry day for children.

Early Head Start is a haven of trust and security in which children and families thrive.

FAMILY CONNECTION NEWS!

The Family Connection’s office sits inside of Head Start’s Main Office. The Family Connection (supported by our backbone agency, Head Start/SOCFC, and a generous grant from Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative) supports 90% of the Parenting Classes that Family Advo-cates teach at Head Start and about 76% of parenting ed-ucation happening in the Rogue Valley.

Our services are FREE to any parent, grandparent, co-parent, or guardian in Jackson or Josephine County. ANY

person may refer to our services and ANY person may participate in our positive parenting work-shops, classes, and family friendly events. We look forward to a busy year!

The Dangers of Drawstrings It is always fun to go shopping for new clothes at the beginning of a new school year. Kids get big-ger, styles change, and everyone is excited about a new “back-to-school” wardrobe. An often over-looked danger is drawstrings in children’s clothing and outwear. Drawstrings can catch on items such as playground equipment or vehicle doors. CPSC has received at least 26 reports of children who have died when drawstrings in their clothes got tangled on playground slides, school bus doors and other objects. The CPSC has issued guidelines on drawstrings which have been incor-porated into an industry voluntary standard. Since the clothing industry started following the volun-tary standard, deaths involving neck or hood drawstrings decreased by 75% and there have been no deaths associated with waist or bottom drawstrings.

Still, we continue to see jackets, sweatshirts, and sweaters made with dangerous drawstrings that must be recalled. Recent recalled products with drawstrings are listed at www.cpsc.gov. Please remember to check your child’s upper outerwear for dangerous drawstrings.
