“Alcohol Abuse”by Pat Lowe

Doug Peninger: SEPPA [email protected]

First Day

January 1, 2012 has come and gone and we are already in the second month of what promises to

be an amazing year.

Last fall, Southern Exposure began advertising a request for SEPPA members to capture an image on

January 1. This “First Day” challenge wassomething we have never done before. This opportunity would allow members to illustrate

whatever they chose. Images could range from scenics to candids to whatever spoke to them.

I never dreamed we would we receive the amazing images which are about to be presented.

Each image tells a story. Each image shares a moment in time complete with emotion and depth. You will see images ranging from a church proces-sional to a moving day and everything in between.

For me, this is a very special issue. We get to see our members as the storytellers they are. I am very

proud of everyone and every image presented.

If you did not enter an image for 2012, rest assured, you will have your chance for the FIrst Day

challenge in 2013.

The SEPPA Board of Governors, at the 2010 meeting in Franklin, TN,

approved the all new SEPPA Degree Program.

The Southeastern Photographic Fellowship

is now a reality!

You can earn your new SPF Degree in two categories.

The orange ribbon is earned with a concentration in print credits,

the purple ribbon with a concentra-tion in service to the organzation.

The requirements for both options are completed with

education and/or service credits. You may also achieve both Degrees,

signafied by a purple and orange ribbon.

SEPPA will post the Credit Chart and submission forms at a later date.

Be sure to check back. All events, beginning

April 1, 2010will be eligible to submit for credit.

About the Artist

Certified Professional Photographer and Photographic Craftsman, Rick Gibbons, has been capturing memories for families in the Piedmont Triad Area of North Carolina since 1981. Having

recently celebrated his 30 year anniversary in the photographic industry, he continues to strive for

excellence in imaging.

Rick has served in every elected office of the Pro-fessional Photographers of North Carolina as well as

all elected offices of SEPPA. He was SEPPApresident from 2003-2005 and was recently

presented the Honorary Southeastern Photographic Fellowship.

Currently, RIck serves as the Vice-Chair of PPA’sBylaws, Rule and Ethics (BRE) committee. His love

of precision and excellence serves him well in these duties.

Over the years, RIck has enjoyed several hobbies. They range anywhere from the love of old Cor-

vettes and Chevy Chevelles to flying and raising his beloved Chow-Chows. One of the proudest moments, for Rick, was receiving the 2010 PPA

Charities Legacy Award. Rick’s passion for helping children, through Operation Smile, and his

zeal for sharing this worthy cause with others helped to garner this tremendous award.

About the Art

Rick has been a member of the historic Centenary United Methodist Church, in Winston-Salem, NC, for

a number of years. There, he helps with ushering and serves on committees.

The tradition of the church is to always process dur-ing the opening hymn of the eleven o’clock wor-

ship service. This formal procession helps to usher in the presence of the Holy Spirit and unify the choir,

congregation and ministers.

As Rick was thinking about what type of image to create for the “First Day” challenge, it was clear to

him that it had to be something from his church.Rick’s faith has always played a major role in his life,

not only in his belief system, but in his compassion for humanity.
