What’s Ahead
Well, it’s August and the last few weeks have been blistering hot and muggy, and almost not
enjoyable to be on the motorcycle. Although some are getting out for breakfast rides and such,
no one is staying out very long. But for those who do… make sure you keep hydrated. That
means drinking plenty of fluids (not caffeinated) throughout the ride. If you start feeling
overheated, stop, find some air conditioning, and rejuvenate yourself. Don’t push yourself to the
point of causing heat exhaustion or a stroke. That would take ALL of the fun out of the ride.
And then, what’s up with the chapter. Well, things have been slow. I’ve put out request after
request asking you the members for ride ideas, but I’ve not heard back from any of you. If you
tried to send me an email, sorry… I have not seen anything about rides or events. So, ONE
MORE TIME, it is your chapter, and you are what makes it great. Not me, or any of the other
team members. So, send those ideas to [email protected] and everyone on the team gets it.
Or just to me, your choice.
So, during the SC Rally, I taught my first Trike Riders Course (TRC), and
am now a certified TRC Instructor. That means, once we locate a
parking lot in the local area we can use, we can plan both an ARC and
TRC here in the Low Country. If you have a lead on a parking lot that
might work, please let me know.
We are continuing with the Rider Education Seminars before the
chapter meeting. Each are about 45 minutes long, so we start promptly at 10am and wrap up just
before the meeting start time. We’ve been having a pretty good turnout, but I would like to see
more of you take advantage of these educational opportunities. I do these for your benefit, and those
attending are learning some keys to riding safely. So come on out and join the fun!
Our September chapter gathering (two from now), has been moved to the second Saturday
because of Wing Ding. We felt it only fair for those going to Wing Ding to have an opportunity to
to attend the monthly gathering when they get home. Besides, I know we’ll all be eager to hear
about their adventures. Same times apply, and we expect to have another Rider Education
seminar prior to the meeting at 10am.
Speaking of gatherings… do you know of someone, or a subject, you would like to see a guest
speaker talk about? I’ve been to meetings where the Highway Patrol have talked about
motorcycle accident statistics, or someone spoke about what your insurance means to you. Is
this something you would be interested in hearing about, or is there something else you’d like to
learn more about? Please drop me a line with any suggestions and I’ll see if I can accommodate.
And my last comment will be, remember, school starts this month. Traffic will get worse and
people will get in a hurry, and they may not see you on the bike, so expect it, plan for it, and ride
safely with those bright colors.
Until next time, ride safe and often,
Mike Melton

Our Big Adventure
Day 1: Packed up the RV and trailer with the trike
and dog trailer. Left Summerville and headed up
to Fancy Gap, VA. Nice quiet campground at an
entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Had dinner
and our first campfire of the trip.
Day 2: Took the trike and dogs for a nice ride
south on the Blue Ridge into North Carolina.
Stopped along the way at the Blue Ridge Music
Center and enjoyed live bluegrass music; banjo,
base and fiddle, of course. Bought our National
Park Passport and got our first stamp, our goal to
get as many as possible on this and future trips to
national parks. Back to our campground for dinner
and a campfire.
Day 3: Today we headed to Mt. Airy, NC, the
hometown of Andy Griffith and the setting of the
Mayberry TV show. Visited Floyd’s Barber Shop
which is now owned by Russell Hiatt’s son, whose
father was the inspiration for “Floyd” and was the
last barber to cut Andy Griffith’s hair. Had our
picture taken to be posted on their Facebook
Page. Also visited the Andy Griffith Museum and
Wally’s Service Station and headed back to camp.
Day 4: Headed out to Luray, VA on the Blue Ridge
in the RV but lots of twisties and not much scenery
in this part of Virginia, so we made our way to the
Interstate. Beautiful campground in Luray to enjoy
a little wine, dinner and another campfire. Great
dog park for the dogs to run and play.
Day 5: Packed up and headed for Intercourse, PA
and met up with our friends, Jim and Carol
McGrath, former MA-C Directors. This is in the
heart of Pennsylvania’s Amish country and we
went to the Hershey Farm Buffet, where we ate
way too much of good old home cooking. We
swore we would never do that again.
Day 6: Being one of their favorite places to visit,
Jim and Carol showed us around the area. The
local Amish meat market,
canning company,
hardware store, etc.
They even knew some of
the local young girls that
sell baked goods in front

of their families’ farms and come around the
campground pulling wagons full of whoopee pies,
sticky buns, shoofly pies, cookies and breads. Of
course we had to try them all.
Day 7: Another
day of visiting
shops in the area.
Gloria and Carol
visited several
quilt shops that
the Amish are
quite famous for in the area. Very cool seeing all
the Amish and Mennonite with their horses and
buggies. Played Rummikub and drank a little wine
with Jim and Carol in the evening.
Day 8: Took the trike out for a nice long ride in the
countryside, passing beautiful well kept homes
and farms. It was Sunday, and we passed a few
“gathering houses” where the men sat together
after services and the women sat together as is
their custom. Dozens of
black buggies parked
outside. We went out to
the Dutch Apple Dinner
Theatre to see the Mary
Poppins Musical and
another buffet. Ate too
much again.
Day 9: Stocked up on local foods and packed up
to continue our trip. Enjoyed dinner from the grill
and played Mexican train dominoes until dark.
Day 10: Left PA and headed north in heavy fog
over the Poconos but skies cleared up in NY state.
Entrance to 1,000 Island KOA campground was a
narrow, hilly and curvy road with no shoulders,
leading to a single lane ¼ mile causeway making
for a most interesting entry onto an island on Lake
Ontario. Our campsite
was right on the water
with a great view of the
lake and spectacular
sunsets. Only drawback
was the wind, which
didn’t let up for days, but
kept all the gnats away.
(Continued on page 4)
4
Days 11 & 12: Spent
these two days in the
campground, taking
the dogs for walks,
doing laundry,
cleaning the RV, trike
and trailers and
gathering wood hoping for an eventual campfire.
Day 13: Took the trike and dogs for a ride on the
Seaway Trail along Lake
Ontario south to Oswego, NY.
Visited Fort Ontario and
learned of its role in the War of
1812 to the present and had a
picnic lunch on the grounds.
Viewed West Pierhead
Lighthouse.
Day 14: Today we rode the
Seaway Trail north along Lake
Ontario
and the St. Lawrence Seaway
through the small towns of
Henderson Harbor, Sackett’s
Harbor and Cape Vincent.
Another picnic lunch and a
visit to Tibbett’s Point
Lighthouse which is still in
operation and the keeper’s
house is now a hostel. Back
to the campground but still
too windy for a fire.
Day 15: Rode the Seaway Trail north again to
Alexandria Bay. Found a small park that
overlooked Boldt Castle and the Singer Mansion.
We watched a very busy St. Lawrence Seaway
with all kinds of watercraft enjoying the beautiful
sunny day
on this
holiday
weekend.
Found a
nice shady
spot on the shore to have our
lunch. Then back to the
campground to watch 4th of
July fireworks.
Assistant Chapter Directors
George & Gloria Servant Our Big Adventure (Cont)
Day 16: Mass exodus leaving
the campground today with
probably two hundred RVs and
campers returning home. That
meant the hundreds of kids on
bikes and skateboards,
teenagers with golf carts and
adults walking dogs that made
this large campground crazy
was now nice and quiet again,
so we stayed an extra day and
finally got to sip wine in front of a nice campfire.
Day 17: Travel day to Brimfield, MA. This
campground had been leveled by a tornado five
years ago and still rebuilding. Sites had no trees,
no cable or Wi-fi, no sewer hookups and were not
level. Had to go to a lumber store to buy 2x12
boards to get the RV level. The only redeeming
quality was the close proximity to Gloria’s mom.
Day 18: Rainy day off and on so we caught up on
laundry, RV maintenance and visited with Gloria’s
mom. Later we rode out to visit with good friends
and neighbors we left behind when we moved to
SC.
Day 19: Our ex-neighbors
and riding pals, Bill and
Nancy, joined us for the
day and we rode some of
our favorite country roads
in Central and Western
Massachusetts circling the
Quabbin Reservoir along
the Mass Scenic Byway. We ended our ride back
at the campground for hamburgers and hot dogs
on the grill and did some catching up. Our son
stopped by later and we enjoyed dinner out and
spending time with him also catching up.
Day 20: Visited with Gloria’s mom again and
returned to the campground to pack up. Nasty
storm with heavy winds hit us as we watched the
weather warnings of possible tornadoes in the
area. That’s when we realized we were sitting in
the exact path of the previous tornado. Time to
leave and head further north.
Check back next month and look for more of the
George & Gloria Big Adventure.

Rider Education
Well this month I want to talk about the
GWRRA Levels Program. Mike Melton
would like to put on a ARC or TRC for
the chapter later in the fall. Who would
like to sign up for one of these? As I
look through the Rider Educator
Database, I see almost everyone is non-
current in the Levels Program, some for
quite some time. We are also trying to
do the seminars that give the members
the education, information and skills to
be safe on ttheir bikes when they are
on the road. Be sure to plan to attend on
Saturday, before our Chapter
Gathering.
At the meeting this month I will have a
sign up sheet for an ARC, TRC and a
Ride Captains Course. If you would be
interested in one of these, please sign
up and Mike will find a date that will
work for us. If you can not make the
gathering call or email Mike or me and
we will get you on the list.
And like always, ride safe and get
home safe!

Did you attend the SC
District rally? Have
you ever been to our
District rally? Lots of
FUN, SAFETY,and
KNOWLEDGE!! If you
missed the weekend,
here's some of what
happened. Mike, Dan and I rode to Anderson by
way of the back roads. We should have taken the
interstates because it took longer by the back
roads and it really got HOT HOT HOT by the time
we got to the hotel to cool off.
Thursday morning Dan helped Mike lay out the
parking lot for the
Trike Riders Course
(TRC). Thursday
afternoon, Robert,
Anita, Dan, Evelyn and
several others from
around SC took the
classroom session of
the TRC. Mike was one
of the instructors.
The evenings were filled with fun activities like
karaoke, line dancing, a theme costume contest, a
"world class" talent show, a lighted bike show, and
a ride to Bruster's Ice Cream.
Friday morning at 7:30 am found the TRC riders
ready to complete the riding
portion of the TRC. Mike and
the other instructor lead the
trike’s through ten exercises,
each getting a little more
difficult than the one before,
but they
really
honed our skills. The course
was completed by 12:30 pm
and we were given our
GWRRA Rider Education
Course Completion cards.
Mike is now a certified TRC instructor, so that
means he can teach ARC and TRC Rider Courses.
Then it was time to go
into the Civic Center to
have lunch and cool
down.
There was lots going on
inside. The game area
was hopping. You could
buy tokens, 5 for $1, to play games with. There
were 3 or 4 table games,
corn hole, golf, etc. After
the games, you would add
up your scores for your
games, then get tickets for
your winnings and use the
tickets to put them in the
buckets
for the door prizes. It was fun to
play the games and to watch
them as well. They also had the
wacky tractor, which proved to
be a challenge to get through the
course, since it’s steering was
modified. There were several
seminars available. also
The vendors were inside where it was cool as well.
They had hats, fancy shirts and jackets, neon t-
shirts, jewelry, purses and belts, tires, lots of bike
accessories, modern cooking, wind wings, crafts,
and several others.
Dan has two high school classmates who live in
Anderson, and we met up with them for dinner
Friday evening. We enjoyed spending the
evening catching up on the past 14 years. a little
diversion from the trike.
The closing ceremony
Saturday evening was where
all the awards were given
out. Mike was awarded his
Level 4 in the levels
program. Chapter G got second place for our
banner. There was a Grand Prize and a Grand 50-
25-25 prizes.
As you can see there was plenty of fun and
activities to take part in.
PLAN NOW TO ATTEND NEXT YEAR'S GWRRA SC
RALLY IN BEAUFORT MAY, 5th & 6th, 2017.

What Happened Last Month Here are some things that took place last month. Submit info for this page to
Chapter Gathering
Our gathering was on Saturday, July 2nd at
Logan’s, Roadhouse, 211 Azalea Square
Boulevard, Summerville. We had a Rider
Education Seminar at 10am. Then folks started
showing up at 11:00 for the 11:30 meeting, of
which we had a good turnout. We had a guest
speaker talking about the Hope Acres Rescue
organization. We talked about the upcoming
events, rally, and rides. We had a Rider Ed
briefing, and then we started eating right at
12:30 . Logans is providing us the meals at a
15% discount off their menu items Come on
out and join us next time.
Rider Educator Seminars
Mike will be offering another Rider Education
Seminar this month, at 10:00am on Saturday,
July 2nd, just before the Chapter Gathering.
Last month, he presented the seminar on “New
-Inexperienced Riders“. It presented some
pointers for the new people to be aware of,
and discussed the roles of the ride leader and
other riders in the group.
Meet to Eats
We had two Meet to
Eats last month. The first
one was on the 7th,
where we enjoyed the
food at Rio Chico
Mexican Restaurant in
Summerville (Out
towards Cane Bay).
They put us in their
back room again, and
we had a great time.
Our second one was on
the 28th at Southern Roots Smokehouse in
West Ashley. It was a little warm since their
AC was struggling to keep up with the heat,
but the food was great. Great ribs, brisket,
salads and many other choices. We had a
great turn out at both, and had a great time.
We hope to see you at one next month.
Kathy’s Craft Night
We are taking a hiatus until September. Do
you have an ideas for craft night? If so, please
contact Kathy at [email protected] or by
her cell phone at 843-509-9669.
District Convention / Rally
The District Rally was held July 14-16 in
Anderson, SC. There was a pretty good
turnout and the weather cooperated. We had
about 11 people from Chapter G in
attendance. There was a TRC & ARC, and four
of our Chapter G folks took the TRC. I think
they learned a lot. The entertainment was
good, and most of the events were well
attended. The new District Staff were
introduced during the closing ceremonies,
and some planned changes were announced.
Read the articles in this month’s newsletter for
more info.
District Plaque Capture
The July plaque capture was cancelled. The
new District Directors announced at the
closing ceremony the Plaque Captures were
being suspended until they can revisit the
rules, and working
out some changes
the Chapters have
asked for. So look
for them later.
Thank You Ed, for
accepting last
year’s plaque for
us.

What’s Happening This Month and Beyond Here are some things that are coming up in the future. Submit info for this page to
Chapter Gathering
Our next gathering will be on August 6th. We
will go into our normal program at 11:00am.
Food orders can be placed before we start
our meeting at 11:30am. Food will be served
at 12:30, or as we finish the meeting. We will
be meeting in the back room and will receive
a 15% discount on any menu item, excluding
alcoholic beverages, so come on out and find
out what we have going on. And please
folks… they are kind enough to give us the
room for free, so please order something.
We will be having our Rider Education
Seminars again this month, and in September,
starting at 10am at Logan’s. We open the side
door so you can get in. So come on out and
join the fun and enjoy a short seminar.
Mikey’s Ride
It’s August and the boxes no longer rule the
house, so Mikey plans to start riding again on
Thursdays and he would love to have some
company. Thursday is his day to escape and
go ride for a short trip. The meeting location
is moving to the Speedway Gas Station, just
east of I-26 in Summerville (exit 199B) with
KSU at 9:30, and we try to be back home by
1:30-2:00 (look for the G-Mail announcement).
Let Mike know if you have a suggestion for a
ride, and let’s go have a good time. All rides
include lunch, go figure, so if you know of a
great lunch place, we can build a ride to it.
Meet to Eats
We have two Meet to Eats this month. The first
one will be on the 11th at Italian Bistro, 1625 N
Main St, Summerville. This is in the Bi-Lo
shopping center, just east of I-26 (exit 199B).
We have been here before and enjoyed the
food. The second one will be on the 25th at
The Coosaw Creek Crab Shack, 8486
Dorchester Rd, Charleston. This is just north
of Ashley Phosphate Rd. Again, we have been
here before and had a great meal. We will
eat at 6:30 for both.
Kathy’s Craft Night
Kathy's Craft Night is taking a brief hiatus,
returning in September. Look for info next
month on what Kathy has planned. As always,
if you have some suggestions for future Craft
Nights, contact Kathy at 843-509-9669 or email
Chapter Maintenance Day
The semi-annual maintenance day is
scheduled for 20 August, but now we need a
host for it. Due to delays in construction,
Floyd doesn’t have room to host. If you have
a place and would like to host it, contact Mike.
This is the day when we get together, work on
our bikes, change the oil, fluids, brakes and
etc. If you don’t know how, you will have lot’s
of leadership there to assist you. BUT… we
need to know what you need to do, so contact
Mike Melton so we can ensure we have all the
tools there we need to assist you. You can
contact him at [email protected].
Wing Ding
We have several people heading out to
Montana for this year’s Wing Ding. It will be
August 31 - September 3rd. Some folks are
trailering their bikes out (no, they haven’t
converted them to Harley’s), so they can get
there quicker and enjoy more of the area.
Monthly Plaque Capture
The District Plaque Capture has been
suspended until the new District Staff can
work work out some long awaited changes.
Look for it in the future. When it happens,
Chapter-G gets to host the inaugural event!

August typically brings the afternoon showers. Although they are cooling, it can wreak havoc
for the bike rider. We all know we need our rain gear, but how well can we see through our
helmet shield and/or even the wind shield? Rain-X now makes a version for plastic, and some
say it works excellent. Check with your windshield manufacturer before applying though.
Note: If you are new to Chapter ‘G’, or if we've missed your birthday or anniversary, please send an email to Evelyn Pittman [email protected]. Include your name, birthday (no year needed) and anniversary (also no year needed).
