Happy July, the month we cele-brate our indepen-

dence. This month is filled with picnics, fireworks and hopefully some sunshine! The forth of July, or rather the evening of the third al-ways meant driving down-town around mid-evening to nab a spot to watch the fireworks with the family. It really is a spectacular com-munity event here in Juneau as I am sure it is most places. The streets, sidewalks, docks, and pretty much any place with

a view of the channel is inundated with enthusiastic people. The streets are filled with excitement and anticipation for the sparkling display of lights, the loud boom that spectators feel in their chests, and the buzz of cheers everywhere. As the finale of fireworks fade away, there is always a mad dash for valley dwellers and out-the-roaders to get home “be-

fore” the crowd. As a kid, the drive was always bumper to bumper, slow going, and usu-ally held up by a fender bender or two. Once home we were swiftly put to bed in hopes that everyone got enough sleep for the parade the next morning. I love the parade. I

remember the huge amounts of candy I’d collect while holding flags and red, white and blue pinwheels. I was so excited to see the creative floats, costumes and decorative vehicles as they

made their way down the street. There is so much culture in Alaska as well as the rest of the United States and Inde-pendence Day is a wondrous day to rec-ognize and celebrate it. Happy Forth of July Southeast Alaska!

Bauer/Clifton Interiors is an interior design firm located in Juneau, Alaska. Jeremy Bauer and Jason Clifton, the principals of Bauer/Clifton Interiors, are designers that share a passion for creating styl-ish, organic, and contemporary spaces.

This project started with the desire to create an open floor plan that takes advan-

tage of the floor to ceiling windows surrounding the room. The desire to work within the modern style and tie into the mid-century styling of the exterior of the home. The cli-ent also appreciated warm natural materials.

Removal of the partial wall sepa-rating the main living space, and raising the header that separated the living space from the back hall made a tremendous change in the functionality and openness of the space. This small change of rais-ing the header up into the ceiling instead of hanging down below the ceiling removed the implied barrier of one space to another. Zoning the large open room into a living, din-ing and kitchen was done with some of the built elements. The addition of the stone wall behind the range provided not only a functional as-pect of allowing a shelf behind the stove and a mounting structure for the new Thermador hood, but it also provided a small separation from the entry of the stairs and living space from the kitchen. Lighting place-ment also plays an important factor in the way an open floor plan func-tions. Recessed, task, can lighting

was used throughout the kitchen to maintain focus on the stone wall and backsplash and provide great work light. A Tech Lighting track system was installed in the living space to help define that zone and allow flex-ibility for future furniture arrange-ments. Lastly, the dining area from where the picture was taken from has a combination of recessed can

lights to allow ample task light to the surface of the dining table but is combined with the addition of a modern dining chandelier that helps bring the ceiling down and create a more intimate space that is perfect for dining. Once furniture is moved in the addition of area rugs will be the last feature that will help define space with in a space.

The new stained maple cabinets is by Showplace Wood Products, the countertops are a 2” thick Chroma quartz, Liebherr refrigeration, Blue-star gas range, Thermador venti-lation, Bosch dishwasher with a custom wood front are some of the items we used in this space. We used eucalyptus flooring through-out the home to provide consistency between rooms while maintaining a durable light and bright tone to each space. Hunter Douglas window cov-erings with the top down and bot-

tom up feature was used to allow just the right degree of privacy with all of these large windows.

Home Purchase from a Builder’s Perspective

I am always curi-ous about the

homes and land on the market and what home buyers are looking for in a home. From fixer-uppers, to existing homes, to new con-struction there can be a lot to choose

from. It all depends on what you are looking for in a home. As a build-

er and remodeler here are some things that I look for and you

can look for when purchasing a home in Southeast

Alaska.

First, check the foundation. Check for cracks, dam-

age, and water stains. Concrete does crack

in older homes and not all cracks are a

problem, but they should be checked out. Foundation cracks caused by settling are a problem and an engineer will need to de-termine the extent of the damage. Water staining on the foundation is a sign that there could be drainage problems or other problems from inside the home. Drain-age problems on the exterior of the home can often be a simple fix. It may be as easy as providing the proper slope away from the house and removing shrubs and trees. However, too often it goes beyond slope and the cause may be an improperly in-stalled or silted foundation drain. Foun-dation repairs can be very expensive so if you really can’t live without the home seek an engineer and get estimates from contractors.

Next, check the roof. The age of the roof and the materials used on the roof need to be determined to fully know the sto-ry behind it. An asphalt shingle roof in Southeast Alaska can last 10 to 15 years. If the asphalt roof is older than that, it may

need to be replaced especially if there is significant moss or algae buildup. Asphalt roofs should be maintained and cleaned on a yearly basis to get the most life out of a roof. Special cleaners are available for purchase at your local hardware store – do not power wash an asphalt roof.

Asphalt roofs can be a significant cost to replace after buying a home. However, if a steel roof needs to be replaced after the purchase of a home, it can cost 30-50% more than an asphalt shingle roof. Steel roofs can last 50+ years in Southeast Alaska, and the first thing to give on a steel roof is the fasteners. Exposed fasten-ers on a steel roof can be easily replaced at a reasonable cost. Flashings, overhangs and roof drainage should also be inspect-ed. Homes with a two-foot or more roof overhang will eliminate some of the rain that hits the side of the home. Look at the roof drainage to see there are any obvious issues with water or ice backing up and that gutters and fascia boards are in good

shape.

After the roof, I look at the energy effi-ciency of a home. Buyers often purchase homes at the upper limits of their price range. So, will you as the new home own-er be able to heat the home? You should be able to obtain the past heating bills and any past energy ratings on the home. Or you can have the home inspector closely inspect the insulation, if the home is not sufficiently sealed and insulated it could be more costly than you bargained for. Insulating and air sealing a home can be the best thing you can do in your new home. The energy savings alone from air sealing and insulating can help with the new kitchen or bath you’ve been dream-ing about.

Next, I check for moisture. Bathrooms, kitchens, and utility room (anyplace where there is water) should be checked for signs of moisture issues. Finding mois-ture problems in a home for sale can be challenging since sellers often repaint or

touch up paint in a home. Paint does not adhere to wet materials. Mold and water stains can show through slightly on newly painted surfaces so look closely. Moisture issues, in most cases, can be easily rem-edied. These issues often include poor ventilation, a shower door leak, or small plumbing leaks, which can be easily re-paired. Other leaks including founda-tion leaks, exterior, extensive moisture issues, and roof leaks can be a bit more costly. Always check areas of a home where there are water sources that can cause moisture issues.

Lastly, follow your gut instinct! If some-thing looks or feels wrong, ask questions. Even if this is your first home purchase or your tenth, you should ask your banker, your inspector, your engineer, or your realtor all of your questions so that you know what you are getting into. If you just can’t live without this particular home, find out what is really going on so you know what

to expect in added costs once the purchase is complete.

Testimonial I LOVE my house! My porch is quite possibly my favor-ite feature! I have so much fun showing it off to anyone who visits, pointing out how we made one wall larger to accommodate a large screen TV; that I picked out the floorplan specifically for the ease of giving the dogs a bath; that I have a skylight in my kitchen and master bath; we picked out the highest grade carpet so it would stand up to the dogs! We began with a basic floor plan and went back and forth, asking Julie if we could try this, sending the idea down to the manufacturer, then having them send back a response. The most comfort-able part for me was knowing that I could change things if the cost went too high. I had a lot of fun picking out colors for carpets and counter tops, picking out the type of floor, type of lighting, and type of siding. Overall it was a very easy experience! I also have some really cool pictures of my house being put together! -Janette & Tom Gagnon | Unit 5

Testimonial I have to say I’m very happy with the way the custom ordering worked. I had been looking at houses for a while, and day-dreaming about one much longer, and was getting put-off by going through place after place and thinking “that needs to be fixed and I’ll need to change that”. Going through the floor plan options al-lowed me to identify those items that were important for me and see how the layout could be adapted to fit the patterns of how I would use the rooms. It was easy (for me) to have the light switches, outlets, and drop-boxes added at the builder instead of after everything was built. Working with you on getting the changes I wanted was great, you helped identify those things I hadn’t thought of (like extra light in the kitchen). Everything worked well from my viewpoint, even reviewing the specifications prior to finalizing the order let me iden-tify items that could be made more to my liking at the builder instead of waiting until after I’d moved in to make changes. Even something so simple as being able to pick the colors for counters and flooring, instead of living with something that would do until I could make a change, has made the place much more “mine” right from the move-in. I really appreciate the work you did to make the pro-cess go so well for me. - Keith Murry | Unit 7

Mountain Meadow Estate6260 Alaway, next to the Juneau Police Department

Testimonial Guests are always pleasantly surprised when they enter our new home. The high ceilings and open floor plan are just two of the things people specifi-cally comment about when they visit. We love our large kitchen with extra wide breakfast bar. We often entertain large groups and use the breakfast bar as a buffet/serving area. This house has THE LARG-EST master bed, bath and closet we’ve ever had. It’s a comfortable home and we are very happy with our choice to purchase in Mountain Meadows. Sandra and Mike Tagaban | Unit 28

Testimonial I would be happy to provide a few lines about my satisfaction with our home: When my husband and I moved to Juneau last year, we were looking for a place that would be comfortable and affordable. Our home in mountain meadows has more than met our needs. I like the fact that I am close to work and shopping and located between the valley and down-town. Mountain Meadows was an excellent choice for us! Shirley and Charles Workman | Unit 29

The great thing about living in a small town where concerts, amusement parks, the zoo, the aquarium or half

the time even the movies are not an option, is that we can celebrate holi-days, festivals and tournaments is a very big way. In my family we each have our own event at a time of year that is “ours,” when we are

super-star of the family.

My husband’s event is Gold Medal. Gold Medal is his week and every-thing is about Gold Medal and Hoo-nah. We spend weeks in preparation.

This year Anthony hit open gyms, bought new shoes, changed his diet and I taught our daughter to chant “Hoo-nah, Hoo-nah!” Marigold’s event this year was Celebration. She practiced her “Hoo-ha” for months and I can proudly report that she both made it onto the stage and did some dancing. And we were there Mom, Dad, Grandmas, Aunties, cousins, bursting with pride. My event is Hol-iday Cup-yes, I still have the trophy in my office - we won and it was awe-some. I have six more months to revel in the glory and I shall.

These events are fun for all of us and get our family through the winter. If it weren’t for basketball games, soccer

or dance practices what would we do? But the most important event for our family is the 4th of July because that is our dog Haagu’s day, when he com-petes in the Frisbee Contest.

Haagu is a tall 85 pound chocolate lab and he’ll be six years old this year. The 4th of July is Haagu’s birthday. The 4th is also my mother’s birthday, but no crowd would gather to watch her catch a Frisbee so she graciously waits until after the festivities on the Fourth to claim the family’s attention. Un-til dinner time it is all about Haagu. It’s an important day for our family because Haagu is a truly fantastic dog who deserves a jubilant crowd cheer-ing for him every day. Haagu has

HAAGU’S FOURTH OF JULY

been with us since he was eight weeks old and is the greatest companion. He took on his role as big brother very dutifully when our daughter was born. He adjusted to being second fiddle in the family with grace and dignity and is fantastic at cleaning up after the baby eats.

The first time Haagu competed in the Super Dog Frisbee Contest is still one of my fondest memories of Juneau Fourth of July. It was a hot, sunny day, the last bluebird Fourth of July in the streak of many, many great Fourths. I was so nervous for Haagu I could not eat any of the fry-bread or cotton candy at Sandy Beach. We registered Haagu for the contest at

one of the baseball dugouts and then we waited as the crowd gathered. The audience formed a wide ring around the field and the throwers and their dogs lined up at home plate one at a time.

I froze when they called Haagu’s name. In all my years of athletics including my college soccer days I was never this nervous. Anthony led Haagu over to home plate and threw the first toss. It was a practice toss and Haagu dropped it. “It’s okay, it’s okay!” I assured my sister, “That one doesn’t count!” We held our breath. Anthony tossed the first judged Frisbee and Haagu sailed through the air and grabbed it. I breathed a little bit. “At least he got

o n e . He won’t have zero points.” At this point I was muttering to myself the same way I muttered “That ref hates you Anthony, you bet-ter stop talking” at Gold Medal and “Stay on the stage Honey, just stay on the stage,” during Celebration. An-thony threw out another toss. Again Haagu came up with a clean catch!

The crowd loved Haagu. Haagu loved

t h e crowd. After his third catch he trotted through the people along the first base line, tak-ing in their affection. Haagu was hot. His tongue drooped from his mouth and he panted hard but he gave the people a great show.

Six 8-oz Halibut fillets, skinned (preferably from fish 60-40 lbs and no thicker than 1 ½ inch thick)

½ cup cream cheese, room temp

½c onion, chopped

¾ c fresh aioli (or mayonnaise) - See Aioli Recipe.

2tsp. fresh lemon thyme, minced

2tsp fresh chives, minced

3T strained Greek yogurt

½ c Manchego cheese, fine shred

2 whole artichoke hearts, fresh steamed and chopped (roughly ¾ cup)

½ c roasted red bell peppers

1/3 c fresh mozzarella, grated

½ c Dungeness crab meat

Salt to taste

Dash white pepper

Dash white balsamic vinegar

We are in our peak of summer now, our days have started the slowdown and our har-

vests are ripe, as well as the bounty pil-ing up in cans and jars in my freezer. One of my favorite July favorites is the availability of fresh Alaskan Pacific Halibut or Hippoglossus Stenolepsis if

you prefer more formal names.

While they are moving into shallower warmer waters in the summer months to feed it’s not feeling that warm and summery on land so what better way to pretend it’s summer in Southeast than by harvesting and enjoying its bounty, especially since our garden production

is going to be a little less than lack-luster. It’s a great time to put up the bounty of the sea in the freezer or jars and of course cook some fresh while you have it.

Here is one of my favorite Halibut recipes I created utilizing fresh summer veggies and herbs. Don’t worry if you

don’t have all the right seasonings, you can be creative with herbs and veggies depending on what you have on hand. (fennel and mushrooms are also great combo)

In blender add first three ingredients and blend lightly to mix, then slowly (very slowly) add the oil (while blender is running) until mixture becomes light and creamy, season with salt and pepper, refrigerate.

Instructions:Preheat oven to 350º and prepare a baking sheet or shallow dish.

Mix cream cheese, onion, aioli, herbs, yogurt and sea-sonings well, fold in crab meat, red peppers and arti-choke hearts in large bowl. Season halibut fillets with extra salt and white pepper, top with 2-3 oz of mix and spread evenly. Bake at 350 for 17 minutes until halibut is white and flaky, be careful not to overcook as it will dry out quickly and continue to cook once pulled out of the oven.

Serve with Alaskan Summer Ale or white wine of your choice, I enjoy an aged Chardonnay if you can find it, or a Pinot Grigio. Enjoy and relax after a hard day’s catch, since halibut has a nice supply of omega-3 fatty acids, complex B vitamins, protein, selenium, phosphorus and tryptophan.

On his fourth toss he leapt so high his front paws and back paws came to-g e t h e r in the air as he snatched

the swirling Frisbee in his jaws and with that Haagu triumphantly con-cluded his performance and returned to my sister and I waiting on the side-line. A fan came with water for Haagu and then we watched the other dogs, biting our nails and secretly enjoying the “awwws” of the crowd when a dog missed a catch.

Much of the crowd dispersed while the judges deliberated but the hard core fans remained. The judges fi-nally announced the winners and Haagu won…second place! He was

proud, Anthony was proud, but I am STILL proud. Haagu won a certifi-cate, a chew toy, a gift certificate to the Gatineau Humane Society gift shop and some doggy shampoo. There are new mothers who carry their infants with less pride than I felt carrying Haagu’s winnings.

We walked through the crowd at Sandy Beach and found Haagu some more water. Then we strutted around a little while longer enjoying the sun and the glory of his second place win. We walked by a young girl who called out to her friends, “Hey, that was my favorite dog from the Frisbee contest!” “Me too,” I thought to myself, “Me too.”

Hannah Lindoff grew up in Juneau and returned to the community after graduat-ing college. She now lives with her hus-band Anthony, daughter Marigold and dog Haagu on Mountainside. Hannah can be reached at [email protected]

U-Haul of Juneau, owned by Jeff and Char Boehm has moved to a new loca-tion in the Lemon Creek area at 5450 Glacier Hwy. The Boehms have owned the store for six years. Boehm says that

the move is more central, and is a better location for their Douglas and downtown customers. “We own the property which is shared with Bobcat of Juneau who have turned out to be a great company to share our building with.”

Boehm is ex-cited to introduce U-Haul’s new U-Boxes. The U-Boxes are a U-haul alternative to ship-ping containers. The boxes are ori-ented for “do-it-yourself ” movers. Boehm says the U-Boxes have be-

come very popular in Juneau, because they are competitively priced and per-fect for customers who have a smaller amount of items to move. When utiliz-ing this service customers can expect the

U-Boxes to be delivered to the residence and once the box is loaded it is picked up and dropped off at Northland Ser-vices Marine Transportation, which is the barge and shipping company that U-Haul contracts through. The U-Box then gets delivered to the new residence or destination. Another option for the U-Box service is to utilize the unit as a storage area. This service is offered for movers who need some extra time or extra storage during the moving process.

U-Haul has also become a Hitch Cen-tral, making it a one-stop shop for all hitch and hitch accessories. The hitches are made custom to fit your vehicle rather than being a universal hitch. U-haul also has multiple boxes to meet all of their customers’ box size require-ments. They offer a packing and ship-ping service as well as they are a UPS pick-up site. Boehm says “if you have an office to pack and move give us a call, we can assist, as you can see we are a full moving center.”

Jeff and Char Boehm of U-Haul of Ju-neau can be reached by phone (907) 523-1090.
