The goal of this $86 million federally fund- ed project is to enhance safety and relieve con- gestion along these heavily traveled highways by widening them from four to six lanes. With an expected completion date in the third or fourth quarter of 2012, the Geaux Wider Initiative will be built in three phases with stages. Phase I Stage I, now completed, consisted of construction of temporary lanes for traffic detours on the east and eastbound lanes. Phase I Stage II will involve construction of new inside lanes and shoulder throughout the existing median, with work beginning on cen- ter phases of Wards Creek, Essen Lane, Bluebonnet and Siegen Lane overpass bridges in Baton Rouge. Phase II Stage I will allow westbound traf- fic to be shifted to the new lane and shoulder in the center median while the westbound bridges and lanes are being rebuilt. Eastbound vehicles will continue to use the existing bridges. Phase II Stage II will allow westbound traf- fic to be shifted from the center median to the new westbound lanes. Eastbound traffic will then move to the center of the new lane and shoulder while outside portions of road and bridge construction of the eastbound lanes is carried out. Phase III is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2011 and end in the last quarter of the same year. It will open traffic on the new inside and center lanes while permanent shoul- ders and outside lanes are constructed east- bound and westbound. Phase III-A involves reconstruction of the on/off-ramps in designat- ed areas of Interstates 10 and 12. (AP) Caterpillar Inc. said June 17 that it plans to invest almost $700 mil- lion over the next four years to start producing mining shovels and expand production of its trucks at plants in Illinois and India. The world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment said it plans to add a new mining shovel production line at its Aurora, Ill., plant and expand truck production in Decatur, Ill., and Chennai, India. The new mining shovels will range from 125- to 800-ton (113 to 725 t) models. The 125-ton shovels are expected to be available in 2011 with larger models following in 2013 and 2014. The Aurora plant is likely to gain about 300 jobs through 2014. Caterpillar spokesman Jim Dugan said jobs will be added at the other plants as demand increases, but the Peoria company doesn’t know how many. Caterpillar said these expansions should increase the truck production capacity of the Decatur plant by about 30 percent. That plant produces Caterpillar’s largest mining trucks, including its 400-ton (363 t) model. The truck capacity of the Indian plant will double to help Caterpillar meet increasing demand in commodity-rich developing regions like Asia. “This investment of nearly $700 million demonstrates our commitment to Caterpillar mining customers around the world,” said Doug Oberhelman, who will become Caterpillar’s CEO in July. “It also is a great example of the job-creation benefits of global trade.” Oberhelman said more than 60 percent of the large mining equipment made at Caterpillar’s Illinois facilities are sold outside the United States. Caterpillar has said it’s seeing stronger demand for its iconic yellow-and-black machin- ery because the economy has begun to recover from the recession. JCB Fields Squad for World Cup Duties in South AfricaA squad of nine JCB Teletruk forklifts is playing a key

role in preparing major stadiums that are hosting games dur-ing the 2010 World Cup tournaments in South Africa.

The JCB Teletruks have been called up for general mate-rials handling duties during the final construction and fit-outstages of hospitality suites and visitor facilities in andaround the six principal World Cup venues in time to wel-come thousands of fans from around the world.

All of the Teletruks have been supplied by Clarklift SouthAfrica (PTY) Ltd., the JCB Industrial dealer in SouthAfrica.

Two of the JCB Teletruks, manufactured by JCB UtilityProducts at its Cheadle plant in Staffordshire, have beendeployed at Soccer City, Johannesburg — the main 94,000-capacity World Cup stadium that will stage the openinggames as well as the 2010 World Cup Final.

There also are two machines working at the DurbanStadium and at Cape Town’s Green Point Stadium, whilethere is one machine on each site at the Royal BafokengStadium in Rustenburg, Free State Stadium at Bloemfonteinand Peter Mokaba Stadium at Polokwane.

Mike Poxon, international sales manager — JCBIndustrial, said: “The tasks at the World Cup stadiumsrequired a forklift truck that was flexible and capable ofworking on rough ground — and the JCB Teletruk fitted thebill perfectly.

“The Teletruk provides a superior lift capacity and for-ward reach that extends over debris and stock piles of build-ing materials, as well as a compact size and 4WD capabili-ty to handle rugged site conditions and limited working

spaces.”This is not the first time that JCB machines have been

called up for World Cup duty — a 24 ton (22 t) JCB JS220tracked excavator was used in the construction of the show-case Allianz Arena in Munich — the main stadium for the

2006 World Cup in Germany and now home to FC BayernMunich.

“We are delighted that JCB’s world-renowned productshave once again been selected to play an integral part in theworld’s largest football competition,” Poxon added.

Hastystated, “Nichols Fleet Equipmenthas been with us since 1991 andwe look forward to this expansionas an opportunity to further devel-op and grow our business togeth-er.”

Based in Chattanooga, Tenn.,Nichols Fleet Equipment Inc. is afactory- authorized dealer for salesand service for IMT mechanicstrucks, truck mounted cranes andair compressors that was alreadyserving Tennessee, portions ofsouthern Kentucky, Georgia andthe western Carolinas. With theaddition of the new territory,Nichols now covers virtually everycounty north of Montgomery in thestate of Alabama.

Nichols’s founder and president,David Nichols, has had a lengthyrelationship with the IMT product

line. His operation started smalland has continuously grown.

“In 1991, as a result of my serv-ice background, IMT gave me aone-year trial period to serve asmall portion of Tennessee. Nowalmost 20 years later, the companyemploys 17 people and serves fourstates,” said Nichols.

Experience in the industry iswhat drives the success of NicholsFleet Equipment.

“I’ve been in this industry since1981 and our staff consists of sev-eral people who have been with usfor more than 15 years. We haveindividuals that actually came towork for us from IMT who arehighly skilled and have extensiveknowledge of the current IMTequipment, as well as the olderequipment. This is important in ourbusiness because one of the attrib-utes that IMT equipment has islongevity. We consistently seeunits that are 20 years old that weare very familiar with and knowhow to troubleshoot and work

with,” added Nichols. In addition to IMT product

longevity and name recognition inthe industry being important to hisbusiness,

“IMT products are unsurpassedin quality, product support isextremely good and they’ve built avery well established distributionnetwork in the U.S., which is big

when you have customers withservice needs who have locationsacross the country,” Nichols noted.

“Our focus has always been oncustomer service and product sup-port. Machines that are downalways take priority over newinstallations in our shop. In order tocover a territory as broad as whatwe have, we obviously put a focusand priority on down time and howquickly we can get our customersup and running,” said Nichols.

(3 mm) thick steel corners, rugged skid plate and protective bullbar. For additional functionality, theVolvo FMX also features a powerfultow hook, headlamp mesh protection, new anti-slip steps and a convenientladder.

“Aquick glance at this truck and itspowerful stance immediately revealsthe close connection between VolvoTrucks and our sister-company, VolvoConstruction Equipment — amongthe world leaders in dumpers, excava-tors and wheel-loaders,” said Jufors.“The new Volvo FMX literallybreathes construction — reflecting itscapabilities, inside and out.”

Designed for Driveline Performance

The new Volvo FMX is based onthe FM platform. The recently updat-ed construction version of the I-Shiftgearbox makes it possible to “rockfree” from almost any situation. Inaddition, a new load sensor sends pre-cise load weight information to I-Shift for an optimal gearsequence and smooth gear start, according to the manufac-turer. Massive braking power, 506 hp (375 kW) at 2,300rpm, is provided by Volvo Engine Brake Plus.

‘The Perfect Construction Truck’“This is the perfect construction truck — and our cus-

tomers have largely driven its development,” said Jufors.“With all the improvements in the Volvo FMX, combined

with the development of a strong service offering for theconstruction business, we hope that our existing customerswill become even more satisfied. We also have high expec-tations that this new truck and our unique total offer for theconstruction segment will attract many new customers.”

New Features on the Volvo FMX• New upper grill, inspired by the FH series, contributes

to a modern look. The Volvo iron mark is larger and more

visible, while the FMX globe sign makes a bold statement. • New central towing device offers robust and reliable

Crushing, Screening &

Recycling Section

By Eric OlsonCEG CORRESPONDENT

Gerry Kenny has worked with materialsprocessing equipment almost his entire adultlife.

A gregarious Irishman, he has workedwith screens and conveyors in Europe andAfrica and since coming over to Americamore than 25 years ago, he has operated oneof the most successful equipment dealer-ships in the Southeast.

So it is not surprising that Kenny knows afew things about how to make friends withhis customers and keep them happy.

Through his company, Sand Science Inc.in Beaufort, S.C., Kenny has built a reputa-tion among construction professionals as avery knowledgeable, reliable and personabledealer of high-quality equipment.

Sand Science is marking 25 years in busi-ness in 2010 largely due to the fact thatKenny offers service that is one-on-one andfamily-oriented — not the rather impersonalbrand of service favored by some compa-nies. Kenny believes his approach leads tosatisfied customers and by extension, moresales.

“We may be a smaller company than a lotof dealerships, but we are very attentive toour customers,” Kenny explained. “Becausewe are smaller, though, we have flexibilityand we have proven that by our longevity. The fact is we can move in a certain direc-tion when we see our customers have a need, whereas bigger dealerships don’t have theability to do that.”

Kenny added that Sand Science doesn’tsell loaders or excavators — it is strictly adealer of processing equipment. Thatincludes several name-brand manufacturers, such as Finlay, Roto-Screen and Kafka.Because of that, Sand Science has becomean expert at finding solutions for its cus-tomers in the handling of soil and aggregatematerials.

“We are able to listen to our customersand I can honestly say, realistically, after 25years you would be hard pressed to find acustomer in the region who would have bad

things to say about us,” he said. “If some-body has a problem, we will do what it takesto address that problem. Our customers’needs are very important to us because weknow that their recommendations are whatwill give us our next sale.”

And it is that penchant for listening to hiscustomers that gave Kenny the idea to add anew dimension to his company.

Sand Science had already establisheditself as a substantial dealer of trommelmachinery through Finlay and Roto-Screen.But most of that business was geared towardmedium to large contractors.

“What I started to see was a need for asmaller, more flexible machine that youcould move onto small sites and somethingthat was a bit more affordable to small con-tractors,” Kenny said. “They were saying tome ‘Look, I would like to buy that brand ofconveyor but I can’t afford it’ or ‘The sites Iam working on don’t allow me to bring it inand out very easily. I just need somethingsmaller.’”

After doing a lot of research, Kenny foundthat the Ultra trommel, manufactured byUltra Plant International, offered the veryflexibility his smaller customers said they

needed.Due in large measure to his reputation and

his contacts in the business — on both sidesof the Atlantic — Kenny was able to suggestupgrades to the Ultra to make it more attrac-tive to the contractor that needs a smallerthan usual trommel.

“Our aim was to provide something thathad all the features of the bigger machines, but was more effective,” he said. “For exam-ple, there are machines out there that havelittle four-foot drums on them, but those aretoo small. We wanted to have features that

Sand Science Adds Flexible Ultra Trommel to Its Lineupthe bigger machines have, like afive-foot drum and a drum with nospokes. We also wanted a machinethat had a variable speed feederwith a wide belt for material col-lection that was still portable andeasy to move around and, obvious-ly, one that was reliable. If youlook at the Ultra you will see that itis basically a small version of thebigger machines.”

As a result of his close relation-ship with the manufacturer, SandScience has become the officialdistributor for the Ultra trommel inthe United States. Right now,Kenny is the only Ultra dealer inthe country, but he is currentlylooking for companies that want tooffer Ultra products, he said.

“I am really looking for smallerdealers, maybe someone who sellsfarm equipment and a couple ofconveyors and mixers, too,”Kenny added. “We want smaller, more family-oriented businessesfor Ultra, not big firms that sellcompeting products.”

In that Kenny is just ramping uphis Ultra business through SandScience, he is more interested infinding dealers in the Southeast

first in order to make it easier to setup lines of distribution for partsand service. Once he gets the expe-rience of working with other deal-ers, he hopes to set up Ultra dealer-ships in other parts of the country.

His interest in developing fami-ly-oriented dealerships comesfrom the involvement of his ownfamily in running Sand Science. From his 10-acre compound justoff I-95 in Beaufort, Kenny hasoperated the business with theassistance of his wife and two sons, along with several other employ-ees.

A native of County Mayo, onthe west coast of Ireland, Kennyworked for Powerscreen in Europeand South Africa for several years. While using Johannesburg as hisbase, he traveled all over the south-ern part of Africa in the early 1980swhere, among other things, heshowed diamond miners how touse portable processing equip-ment. Kenny’s African adventuresare featured in the novel, “TheKimberley File,” which he pub-lished in the late 1990s and fre-quently gives out to his customerstoday.

“They were all using staticequipment at that time,” Kenny

said.Powerscreen brought him to the

United States to set up a franchisefor its equipment and gave him achoice as to where he wanted tolive and work.

“I am a warm weather man,”Kenny said. “The only placesavailable were South Carolina andGeorgia, so we choseColumbia, S.C. It wasin January and I was ledto believe it was awarm climate here, yetwhen I arrived it was 11degrees and I didn’teven have a jacket.”

He later moved toBeaufort chieflybecause he and hisEnglish-born wife,Diane, loved the 1983movie The Big Chill, which was filmed in theBeaufort area.

Since then, the Kennys havebecome American citizens, as wellas enthusiastic Gamecock fans dueto their sons having attended theUniversity of South Carolina.

Kenny said that Sand Science’shigh profile location just off I-95,coupled with his advertising expo-sure in Construction Equipment

Guide, has been great for advertis-ing his business.

As a result, he said, the compa-ny has had customers from “Maineto Honduras.”

“But our main business comesfrom the Carolinas and Georgia, although because we are only twohours from Jacksonville we also do

business in north Florida,” headded. “I would say that we selleverywhere within a 500-miledirection.”

Sand Science’s primary focus issales and rentals, but the companyalso offers complete parts supportand service.

To Kenny, everything he does in

his business is designed to get hiscustomers what they need to besuccessful.

“For example, if someone wereto call me and say they are interest-ed in an Ultra, we have a specialprogram going where we will rentone to them for a week,” heexplained. “Generally I wouldn’t

rent anything for lessthan a month. Butbecause the Ultra isnew and there is arecession on wheremoney is scarce formany small contrac-tors, I will rent weekto week for as long asthey need it.Hopefully when theyget enough money init to get financing tobuy, they willremember that I gotthem going.”

Another jaw crusher in the Sandvik CJ200 series is now avail-able — the CJ208. This is a crusher for customers who do notwant to compromise between lightweight and heavy-dutyequipment, mobile and stationary applications, and processflexibility and easy operation. The new Sandvik CJ208 isthe smallest member of the family.

Sandvik’s CJ200 series offers a combina-tion of lightweight equipment and heavy-duty crushing applications. The optimizedcrushing chamber provides a high reductionratio and capacity. The CJ200 series’ widerange of applications also includes the possi-bility of producing a 0 to 1.5 in. (0 to 4 cm)final product in one crushing stage. Moreover, the CJ200-series crushers areeasy to operate and maintain, according tothe manufacturer.

The frame of Sandvik’s CJ200 series of jawcrushers is all-welded, making it equally strongin all directions and ensuring durability againstshock loads. In turn, this minimizes the risk ofmainframe failure, as seen with a bolted design.Furthermore, the design of the deep symmetrical crushingchamber maximizes feed size, capacity and reduction.

The CJ200’s heavy-duty capacity makes it apractical choice for stationary applications. The

crusher’s compact, low-weight and easy-to-install design also makes it ideal for use inmobile applications. Its bolted feet enable theSandvik crusher to be used as a stationaryunit with zero degree inclination or on amobile unit with five-degree inclination.

The Sandvik CJ208 and the other mem-bers of the 200 series are available with a

range of optional equipment, such as automat-ic bearing lubrication, feed hopper, intermediate

protection plate and a complete drive package, including motor, bracket, pulley, belt and fly-

wheel/belt protection. The CJ200 series has low energy and

operating costs due to its optimized fly-wheels. For example, the CJ208 model requiresonly a 74 hp (55 kW) motor to crush the hardest

material with the smallest feed openings.
