As we make a toast and raise a glass or two to the New Year, our thoughts naturally turn to the next 12 months ahead. Ambitions are set, resolutions are made, and priorities are well, prioritised. To celebrate this fresh start, this issue, the Journal chats to four local
residents about their plans for 2015. From project-managing home renovations to jet-setting around the world, find out more from page 10. It has certainly given me plenty of inspiration. Elsewhere, if you’re looking for the usual January fitness features, fret not, as Tom Hagues tries out hot yoga (p.20), while Battersea-based personal trainer Vicki Martin shares her top five tips to whip your body
back into shape (p.21).
Also, Bonnie Estridge chats to Call the Midwife actress Charlotte Ritchie about the new series, gigs with her brother and growing up in Clapham – read on from page 12. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, find out more about Chief Political Correspondent of Sky News Jon Craig and his wife Caroline, who live a stone’s throw away from the Common, and all their media mogul pals (p.16).
We hope you enjoy this issue and have a fabulous start to 2015.

Positive changes Plans to extend the Northern Line from Kennington to Battersea have been given the go ahead. The underground extension will support the redevelopment of Nine Elms by connecting the area directly to central London. Battersea Power Station is currently undergoing an extensive redevelopment that will be home to one of two new underground tube stations with the other just off Wandsworth Road. The new tube link will cut journey times and treble the number of jobs in the area by as much as 25,000. The project is to start as soon as spring 2015, with stations planned to be open in 2020.

Park racing Wandsworth Council has endorsed plans to potentially stage the climax of the current Formula E championship season in Battersea Park from June 2015. Spectators will have
the opportunity to witness state-of-the-art electric racing cars, subject to planning permission. If the event is given the go-ahead, Battersea Park could receive around £1million of investment from Formula E to be spent on improvements.

Have your say Parents with children attending schools in Wandsworth are to be consulted on proposed changes to school admissions that will make it easier for local children to go to their nearest school. The new proposed rules will see siblings living within 800m of the school to which they are applying will get an automatic place. Brothers and sisters of pupils living further away will also receive priority admission as long as they’ve not moved home since their older sibling first attended the school. The proposals attracted more than 900 responses and the new rules will see around 50 children get a place at their local school each year.

Haley HillAuthor, PR guru and mum of twins
This year, i’m hoping i’ll have a bit more time on my hands once our twin girls Chloe and livia [four] start at Broomwood School on Ramsden Road in September.
i’m currently penning the first draft of my second novel called Love
is a Battlefield, which is due in July. i dedicate Wed afternoons to writing and i do my PR work when kids are at nursery school between 9am until midday. The publisher Harlequin is also re-releasing my first novel It’s Got to be Perfect in June, so i’ll be doing lots of PR pre- and post-launch.
This summer, my husband James and i are taking the girls to South africa [James was born there] to meet their cousins for the first time. as it’s a 10-hour flight, we’ve avoided flying there until now as it’s such a long journey to make with little ones in tow. While we’re there, the girls will be christened in the same church where James and i married in Clarens – it will be a very special occasion.
i want to get back in shape and rejoin the gym which i’ve been putting off since i had the girls. i

i love the new year and always make a list both professionally and personally.
First and foremost, i’ll be organising an official launch party for our Barbershop on northcote Road, which has recently opened. Having started both the salon and the barber’s in 2014 i’d like to see them continue to grow in popularity.
i’ve been invited to enter a lot of business and industry awards, so this year i’d really like to enter and possibly even win one.
i’d like to produce our first collection of pictures for the salon. The team are all keen to be in the photographic studio – it would be great to produce some personal imagery.
on a personal level, i’ve been intending to attend a stand-up comedy course for a couple of years; a friend recently did this and raved about it, so that’s definitely on my to-do list.
(anthonylabanhome.com)
used to love Pilates classes, but i just can’t seem to fit them in any more. i bought a Pilates DVD, but it’s just not the same!
i’d also like to spend more time with my family and venture out to our usual eateries, including Soif on Battersea Rise and Source Battersea.
at home, we’re currently in the process of digging out our basement which i’m project-managing; once it’s completed it will have an office in it so i can work from home, a kids’ play area and a dining room.

In recent years I’ve frequently worked with well-known chefs, and the year ahead looks set to follow the same pattern. It will be something of a marco Pierre White year.
February sees the publication of White Heat 25, which I had the pleasure of working on. It’s a special 25th anniversary edition of the iconic cookbook that made cheffing the coolest job in the world and inspired so many young men like Jason atherton, adam Byatt, sat Bains and tom Kerridge. the book was set in the kitchen of Harveys beside Wandsworth Common, which Wandsworthians now know as Chez Bruce.
meanwhile, marco’s autobiography The Devil in the Kitchen, which I ‘ghost wrote’, has been optioned by filmmaker sir Ridley scott. He plans to turn it into a Hollywood movie. Fingers crossed, the cameras will roll this year.
among other book projects, I’ll be writing with Ken Hom, the man who introduced Chinese cookery to Britain. Ken has lavish homes in thailand and France, and I’m happy to travel. Ken, are you reading this? I’m happy to travel...
In november 2014, I spent a few weeks in australia, again with British chefs including Heston Blumenthal. Our mission: to eat, drink and explore the country’s gastronomic scene. mission accomplished. though I’d love to return in 2015 and explore some more. . . n

as we prepare for Phoebe’s first Christmas [she’s 11 months old] we’re looking forward to 2015 with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. I say trepidation because early January will see her spend her first day at nursery, which I’m confident won’t faze her in the slightest, but will undoubtedly leave her anxious mummy and daddy completely traumatised. Having a toddler learning to explore an entirely new world means 2015 will bring with it lots of firsts. We’re fortunate to have Battersea Park on our doorstep, and the moment Phoebe begins to walk we’ll be able to let her loose in the park with our chocolate Labrador, hopefully tiring them both out. Following the launch of our new venture the upper Deck Oyster and Champagne Bar, this summer we’ve been inundated with requests to attend a plethora of private events. It seems plenty of people are keen to add a touch of glamour to proceedings and, for us, this ensures that 2015 will be filled with lots of wonderful celebrations – it’s always a real treat to play just a small part in someone’s special day.

When Charlotte Ritchie heard that she had won the much-coveted role of Barbara Gilbert, the new character in the hugely popular TV series
Call the Midwife, she recalls that she ‘Could hardly believe my luck.
‘This was a series that I had always watched and totally loved. So being chosen for this role was just fantastic – not only for me but also for the rest of my family who love it too and had enjoyed it well before I even appeared on the show...’
But there was probably no one who could have been more excited and proud than Charlotte’s mum who admits that she couldn’t quite believe what was happening to her about-to-be very famous daughter.
Born and brought up in Clapham, Charlotte, 25, says that when she spends long spells working away from the area she cannot wait to come back to
her old haunts and see her family and friends. The product of an über-musical family, she is
clearly an all-round performer. Her brother Luke is a musician and the pair are well-known in the area for playing frequent local gigs at the Balham Bowls Club, The Antelope in Tooting and The Bedford Arms in Balham.
‘I also played in a four-part, all-girl classical crossover harmony group called All Angels for six years,’ she tells me. ‘We were a vocal quartet who sang light classical choral, folk and pop music.’
But Charlotte and Luke have also had plenty of encouragement from top producer Richard Cardwell who had seen the pair do a sound check at The Angel pub in Islington, which helped them no end.
She recalls: ‘Richard told us that he loved the way our voices sound when we sing together and he was also most impressed at the songs that Luke had written. We were both surprised and delighted when he invited us to come and record at his studio.’
Amazingly, there’s yet another musical sibling,
r aWtalentBonnie Estridge chats to Call the Midwife actress Charlotte Ritchie
about the new series, gigs with her brother and growing up in Clapham
Alice, of whom Charlotte says: ‘Possibly isn’t quite enough of a show-off to come and sing with us.
‘But actually, it’s strange enough having grown up with your brother to then end up working with him, let alone your sister as well…’ she laughs.
Charlotte admits that she was lucky enough to go to school at James Allen’s Girls School in Dulwich as there was an exceptional music and theatre department, so she really benefited from all the extra-curricular activities, studying AS and A-level drama in sixth form.
In fact, she found herself an agent when she was just 15 through a chance encounter that her mother had with a casting director.
‘I was lucky enough to be cast in an adaptation of a film called The Open Doors based on a short story directed by James Rogan which starred Michael Sheen and Cherie Lunghi,’ she says.
‘My agent asked me if I would like to be represented by Creative Artist Management, which was pretty exciting. I met and signed with them and was then packed off to plenty of auditions, one of which – some years later -- was Call the Midwife.
‘Mind you, initially I did it all wrong… Dressing in black and scraping my hair back, thinking that this was how one should look as a would-be actress wasn’t the right way at all. It looked completely unnatural and absolutely nothing at all like the character I was auditioning for.’
After her first audition for Call the Midwife at the end of May 2014 [filming finished at the end of October, 2014] Charlotte admits that she was: ‘Very excited but extremely nervous.
‘I had to learn a couple of scenes and then meet the casting director and producer who gave me a breakdown of the character I was going to be playing in the show.
Charlotte admits that it was certainly daunting going onto the set to meet an established cast who

had known each other for a long time as the series had been running since January 2012.
She says that she’d imagined that joining was going to be a pretty intimidating experience. However, happily all the cast members – Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart, Judy Parfitt, Linda Bassett and Stephen McGann – were just a few of the actors who, she says, put her at ease right from the beginning.
The dramatic scenes of birth that fans of the series enjoy so much are many of Charlotte’s personal favourites and she confesses that filming the scenes when there were real babies on the set was a joy.
‘The babies are artfully swapped with dolls, something that looks so amazingly natural on screen that the viewers often find it pretty hard to work out quite how it is done.
‘In fact, everything is filmed with the real babies, right up to the time of the “delivery”, and then there will be plenty of dramatic pushing and close-ups with amazingly lifelike dolls and strategic side shots through the legs of the actress who is playing the mother in labour.
‘Terry Coates [a real midwife] was always on-set to give advice as to what was happening and she would be crouched next to the “mother” either beside or under the bed.
‘When the “baby” was needed,
Terry would pass a doll that had been covered in oiled fake blood into the
“mother’s” arms. ‘It was fascinating to see how
all this was done and it’s quite difficult not to get broody…’
Talking to Charlotte – who has also appeared in the popular Channel 4 comedy series Fresh Meat – it’s pretty clear that she has landed her dream role.
The first episode will be airing on Christmas Day as a “special” and Charlotte will be seen on our screens 10 days later.
‘Of course the family are really excited and mum in particular says that she cannot believe that everything has been happening so quickly for me,’ says Charlotte.
‘She’s absolutely thrilled that I’ve been signed for another series of Call the Midwife.
‘Mind you, Luke and I are looking forward to plenty more gigs in Clapham, Tooting and Balham and he has a brilliant album out called The Water’s Edge – so anyone who wants to come and see us is more than welcome.’
No doubt many of the Call the Midwife fans will be there like a shot. n
The Christmas special of Call the Midwife will air on Christmas Day on BBC1 at 7.50pm, series four will be on screens from 18 January, 2015 on BBC1

ON THE COMMON
Walking our dogs on the Common is one of the great joys of South London life, and now there’s an added incentive. If you’re a news watcher and enjoy politics
you can spend your chilly winter mornings looking out for Jon Craig, Chief Political Correspondent of Sky News, and his family’s border terrier Dylan. The Craigs live in a comfortable family home, just yards from the leafy spaces of Wandsworth Common and the shops of Bellevue Road.
‘When we bought the house it needed a bit of work,’ says Jon. ‘We’ve had the inside repainted and made a few changes to turn it into a family home. The children have both had their say on how they wanted their bedrooms to look. Jack’s is a shrine to Dr Who, while Sophie’s is to bands I’ve never heard of. We’ve still got some boxes from when we moved in that we haven’t unpacked yet and pictures we haven’t put up. But we’re getting there, albeit slowly!’
Jon’s wife Caroline, a glamorous former House of Commons secretary, says they’ve had some help from her friend, designer Emma Norris, who lives across the Common with her husband Steve, who was a colourful and high-profile MP, Government minister and twice Conservative candidate for London mayor.
‘Emma seems to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of paint colours and can look at a room and come up with a perfect colour scheme instantly,’ describes Caroline. ‘She has taught me a lot about different coloured hues of paint; I never knew there were so many different shades of white in the world!’
The dimensions of the Edwardian house give it a homely, peaceful feel and the large garden adds to the calm, country-like feel. It’s no doubt a haven for Jon from the hurly-burly of Westminster and, as Caroline is originally from Worcestershire, she loves the way that Wandsworth echoes the green spaces of her childhood and her family home, which is in the area said to be the inspiration for The Archers.
‘I spent a couple of years in Herefordshire with the children when they were small and I wanted somewhere similar in London,’ says CaroIine. ‘I really feel that this area is the closest you can get to the country in town.’
The Craigs’ two children, Sophie, 14, and Jack, 12, both went to the Holy Ghost Primary School
in Nightingale Square in Balham. ‘Sophie loves wandering along Northcote Road with her friends. She goes to Pizza Express for lunch or All About the Girl for a facial. Jack, meanwhile, enjoys the freedom and safety of the area; whether it’s hitting balls on the driving range at the Central London Golf Centre with Jon, or speeding across the Common on his Penny Skateboard, while Dylan sniffs around and chases squirrels.’ Jon adds: ‘He hasn’t caught one yet!’
Jack is at the Bolingbroke Academy, just the other side of the Common while Sophie goes to More House School in Knightsbridge. Although they still have the friends that they made at Holy Ghost and Caroline still sees the group of mums from Sophie's and Jack's year groups including top freelance journalist Joanna Moorhead.

Caroline has clear ideas on how children should be brought up: ‘We know so many families who insist that their children are constantly at a club or playing football,’ she says. ‘I feel that they need time to just be children, and if we’re at home I like them to feel relaxed and able to chill out in front of the television.
‘Jon spotted me reading an article on work-life balance the other day and joked that he worked and I have a life. At least I think he was joking. He might have a point, as I do love being at home or wandering into the shops on Bellevue Road. Jack gets his hair cut at Anthony Laban and I go to Tranquillity next door, which is fabulous for massages. There’s a great range of shops in the area; I’m particularly fond of Jigsaw for clothes and Revamp Interiors for design inspiration.’ Indeed, the brightly patterned cushions on the enormous sofa that immediately catch the eye on arrival into the Craigs’ kitchen-dining room are from Revamp Interiors on Bellevue Road, along with the tall lamp next to the sofa.
Jon clearly enjoys living in the area and has discovered that many media friends and politicians also live close by. He recounts: ‘We hadn’t lived here very long when Rav Singh, the former News of the World showbiz columnist and now a very successful pop promoter, tweeted that he’d seen me walking the dog on the Common!’ says Jon. ‘Wow!’ I thought. ‘No escape here!
‘Rav lives just a few doors up the road from us,
with Marion, Piers Morgan’s ex-wife. I saw Piers a few weeks ago as I was driving up Balham Park Road. He was looking slightly breathless after a run on the Common with one of his sons. That’ll teach him!
‘We hadn’t lived here long either, when I bumped into Danny Alexander, the LibDem MP and Treasury Chief Secretary, at the checkout in Waitrose in Balham on a Sunday morning. I’ve since seen him a few times on the Common with his children. When he comes into the Sky News studio in Westminster I now call him my Balham neighbour.
‘I find I’m always bumping into someone I know from our noble profession on the Common. Alistair Bunkall, Sky’s Defence Correspondent, lives
just the other side and I sometimes see “Bunkers” and his wife Kate walking their baby in the pram.
‘I’ve seen Carole Walker, the BBC political correspondent running, though she’s too fast for me! Caroline and I have also bumped into Jane Moore, The Sun columnist and TV presenter, who I used to work with on the Today newspaper years ago, walking her dog when we’ve been out with ours.’
The Craigs are also fond of eating out in the local area and choose their favourite restaurants depending on the company they’re with. Jon describes: ‘When we’re with the kids we like Brinkley’s Kitchen at the corner of Bellevue Road and Trinity Road or Harrison’s in Balham. The children can order a

burger and I can have rare roast beef on a Sunday.‘If we’re with friends we like The Good Earth, the
Chinese restaurant on Bellevue Road on a Saturday evening, or The Abbeville Kitchen on Abbeville Road for Sunday lunch. I particularly like the Swaledale lamb shoulder. I’m also a big fan of the cheeseboard in Chez Bruce, which is again on Bellevue Road.’
When it comes to pubs, the Craigs’ favourite is The Nightingale on Nightingale Lane. Jon says: ‘It’s a proper pub, with a dartboard and a great crowd at the bar. If the children are away for the weekend we sometimes go and watch the racing there on a Saturday afternoon. I also quite like the Althorp on Bellevue Road, especially if they’ve got Timothy Taylor’s Landlord on, and I like the fish pie with chilli spinach on a cold day.’
Caroline and Jon moved in the same circles in Westminster for years, as Caroline worked as a Commons secretary to Michael Ancram and many other MPs. ‘We’d been friends for decades; Westminster is like a village and the journalists are part of that,’ says Caroline. But their friendship developed into something deeper and they married secretly on 20 December last year at Chelsea Old Town Hall and then Jon announced the event on Twitter. ‘My friend Kevin Maguire of the Daily Mirror immediately tweeted “Commiserations to Caroline!”. The only person in this area who knew in advance was Hannah, the florist in Gardenia on Bellevue Road, where I ordered the flowers from!’
Apart from Caroline’s sister Rowena and her partner Mike, the only other wedding guests were Sophie and Jack and Emma and Steve Norris with their son Harry. ‘We wanted it to be about our family and closest friends,’ says Caroline. ‘We wandered over to Bluebird on the King’s Road afterwards. It was a great day and just how we had imagined it. We went to Mauritius for our honeymoon, which was very special.’
It certainly seems that every time you turn on Sky News, Jon Craig is there on the green outside Parliament, with his trademark red scarf and insightful political analysis. Caroline meanwhile is penning a book about the colourful world of Westminster, even though she has given up her career at the House of Commons.
‘I was there for 30 years and now that the children are getting older I’m looking for a new challenge,’ she says. ‘I’ve written in the past and am busy putting together a diary of my time at the Commons. I lived through some extraordinary events while I was there and I think people will find it a good read, with some stories that will put smiles on their faces.’
It certainly seems that living in SW12 has put a smile on the faces of Jon and Caroline and their family. n

Inside the yogahaven studio where I’m about to attempt a hot yoga class, the first thing I do is check that I haven’t just bustled into a walk-in oven. The heat is intense, its humid fingers
immediately massaging my body, giving me cause to emit a long, low whistle and rub the back of my neck like an incredulous mechanic. Allie Hill, yogahaven founder and expert instructor, enters wearing (to my surprise) a woollen jumper that would give even an Arctic explorer a hot flush, and we have a quick chat about where the best place would be for me to set up camp. We settle on a prime spot where I’ll be able to observe the others and make sure I’m doing everything properly. Or at least as properly as a yoga virgin can.
Gradually, I grow accustomed to the heat. It’s a brilliantly cold day outside and soon I’m grateful for my cocoon-like surroundings. A female classmate arrives and pitches her spot, followed by three other ladies. Two more shuffle in, then another three. The room fills up until I can no longer ignore the fact that I’m the only male in there. Oh well. My bright red shorts make me stand out like a sore thumb anyway.
At this point, Allie returns and puts on some music. ‘OK, everyone, get into child’s pose,’ she instructs. Until this moment, I’ve never attempted yoga and for some reason I hadn’t realised that I was going to need a basic understanding of the art in order to get through the intermediate class. The only child’s pose I can think of is grinning madly with gappy teeth, while holding a large ice cream. A quick glance around the room confirms that I’m meant to be on my knees, bent flat to the floor with my arms outstretched and nose touching the mat. I assume this position and await further instruction.
We begin by getting the blood flowing and muscles loosened by repeating a cycle of movements involving numerous poses, including the downward-facing dog and the plank. In this heat, even these relatively simple stances really get
the sweat going, and I grunt to keep up with the ladies who appear to be doing it effortlessly. ‘And now, down into food-bank Casablanca,’ says Allie. I’m well aware I’ve misheard her, but since my yoga lexicon stretches no further than Spandex, I’m clueless as to what she might have actually said. I try not to worry about it, because I’m beginning to enjoy myself. As they say, ignorance is bliss.
As the routine develops into something a little more intense and fast-paced, the fact that I’m new to the game becomes clear. Despite this, Allie is encouraging, making my ineptitude irrelevant. At one stage, when everyone has their legs very high in the air with their faces pressed into the mats, I’m wobbling uneasily with my leg half-cocked and my stomach pressed to the floor. No one’s looking, I reason. It doesn’t matter. As I stand up, I realise just how sweaty I am. The squelch that follows me sitting back down on the mat is only marginally less embarrassing (and comical) than the rubbery squeak of me shifting my weight around on the sodden towel. I’m reduced to a seal-like state. This is harder than I’d expected.
At the end of the session, I peel the mat from the floor and feel sorry for the person who’s going to have to wring it out. It’s not until I exit the studio that I begin to notice the benefits of my session. I feel awake, invigorated. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed myself and I now understand why hot yoga is so popular, especially in the frosty winter months. n

If you’re looking to drop pounds this year, incorporate some of the advice below into your everyday living and you’ll soon start to notice big changes,
writes Battersea-based personal trainer Vicki Martin
ways to shape up this New year
1. the best preparation for tomorrow is today
Each week create a plan and stick to it. Use a template to plan every meal, every snack, every workout,
and tick it off as you go along.
2. Clean = lean
Eating ‘clean’ means eating food in its most natural state. To start, cook everything from scratch; avoid sauces from a jar,
ready-prepared meals and eating out. Follow these simple guidelines and you will notice a dramatic increase in energy levels, mood and productivity and less bloating and fatigue, let alone a leaner physique. Here are my top tips:
• Eliminate sugar – all kinds (particularly refined sugars), except fructose, the natural sugar found in fruit
• Reduce saturated fat intake such as red meat, cheese and butter
• Avoid all refined grains such as white bread, white rice, white pasta and white flour
• Reduce dairy intake• Reduce alcohol intake• Load up on veggies
3. Go hard or go home
High intensity interval training (HIIT) is the most effective method of cardio-based exercise for fat-burning and increasing
the metabolism. It causes the ‘after burn’ effect, which is an oxygen deficiency to the muscles. It makes your body work harder for up to 48 hours afterwards, to supply the muscles with the oxygen demand needed. Try this beginner’s HIIT workout for any cardio activity and as you progress start reducing the recovery interval time and increasing the 100 per cent effort time.
Here are my guidelines:• 5-10 mins: Warm up • 30 secs: Recovery interval
(50 per cent of maximum ability) • 30 secs: Maximum effort interval
(100 per cent of maximum ability)• 5-10 mins: Cool down
4. use your body weight
You can perform a challenging workout anywhere with just the use of your body as resistance. A body weight workout is
functional, improving the way you use your body in everyday activities. It improves flexibility, balance, increases muscle mass and metabolism, and most of all it’s free.
So why wait? Try this simple yet challenging body weight workout. Perform each exercise and quickly move on to the next one without any rest. After all exercises, rest for 90 seconds and repeat twice more.
• 30 squats • 10 press-ups • 15 lunges (each leg)• 10 triceps dips
5. Drink more water
Water is vital to your existence as it regulates your body temperature, lubricating your joints, protecting the spinal
cord, distributing nutrients and flushing out toxins. When you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated and have lost approximately three per cent of water. Dehydration slows down the fat-burning process, so stay hydrated by drinking at least two litres of water a day, excluding tea and coffee, as these can have the opposite effect. n

Parent traP: naPPy Valley net NappyValleyNet.com has become an online sensation in the four years since founder Susan Hanage, aka. Annabel, launched it, with more than 130,000 visits to the site every month. An invaluable tool for parents based in south-west London who are seeking to swap tips and share advice, we’ve teamed up to post some of the most pressing topics posted on the site
Restaurant recommendations Can anyone recommend any good restaurants in SW11? We have been going to Numero Uno for a long time but we fancy a change. Chez Bruce is great for a special occasion, but now we want to explore and try new places.

Rosita on Northcote Road and Donna Margherita and Ristorante Ichnusa on Lavender Hill are all favourites of mine. The Bolingbroke on Northcote Road is also nice.
Tue 1 Jul, 2014 10.43pm
I still love Osteria Antica Bologna on Northcote Road, even after 20 years of going there. The Bellevue Rendez-Vous around the corner from Bellevue Road is a gem and serves genuine French cuisine that is well-cooked.
Thu 3 Jul, 2014 8.17am
I’d like to say that London House on Battersea Square is really good. It’s also an easy walk from Northcote Road, and I can’t recommend it enough.
Sat 12 Jul, 2014 2.55pm
I went to Pho on Battersea Rise last Sunday. It was really buzzing for an early Sunday evening. The food was really tasty and the staff were very attentive. You can eat a quick meal and leave, but they were happy for us to stay and chat after finishing and didn’t rush us out. I’m looking forward to trying Sinabro and Wagu.
Fri 15 Aug, 2014 9.36am
I recently had a delicious Japanese supper at Tokyo Retro, on Abbeville Road. It’s slightly quirky and has charming service. I wish we had something similar on Northcote Road.
Fri 22 Aug, 2014 8.48pm
The new posh fish and chips on Abbeville Road, Kerbisher & Malt, is fantastic. I’m now a regular customer.
Fri 29 Aug, 2014 10.46pm
We went to Sinabro on Battersea Rise and we weren’t disappointed. The food was amazing, the presentation was excellent and the vibe of the space was just great. We will definitely go again, even though the desserts were not as spectacular as our starters and mains.
Wed 1 Oct, 2014 6.46pm
Four of us went to Sylvan Oak on Garratt Lane in Earlsfield last weekend and were really pleased with everything. It was a delicious meal that wasn’t over the top and the ingredients were of a very high quality. The staff were very friendly, the atmosphere was nice and the décor was inviting. There were couples in there having romantic dinners, larger tables celebrating big birthdays and some family gatherings too, so it obviously appeals to every occasion. I equate it to Lamberts which is one of my all-time favourite restaurants round here.
Thu 2 Oct, 2014 8.19pm
The Dairy by Clapham Common is fantastic. I enjoyed some of the best food I’ve had in years when I went. It’s smart but also very relaxed and I thought it was a refreshing change from Chez Bruce on Bellevue Road.

Lauren Romano gets a sugar rush with Lavinia Davolio, founder of Lavolio Boutique Confectionery, a company that
specialises in sweets for grown-ups
perfectionConfeCtion
Sugar and spice and all things nice – according to the old nursery rhyme, that’s what little girls are made of. As a child, this formative life lesson was something that I
took very seriously. A trip to the newsagent’s, with its jars of flying saucers, milk bottles and bulbous gobstoppers, speckled with fluorescent yellows and slime-greens, would induce an acute bout of eyes-bigger-than-belly syndrome. By the time I was eight years old I was a connoisseur of Quality Street and could probably have navigated my way around the Woolworths’ pick ‘n’ mix counter blindfolded. If I was given the choice, fruit salads sweets would have constituted at least two of my five-a-day, so the fact that I made it to adulthood with no fillings is nothing short of remarkable.
Nowadays, my relationship with the sweeter things in life is a nostalgic affair. Give me a paper bag of aniseed twists and I’m traipsing through a bluebell forest with my granddad, cousins and Shane the Border Collie, feeling like a member of The Famous Five. It’s a sensation that Lavinia Davolio shares, although she has gone to greater lengths to appease her sweet tooth, by starting her own confectionery company.
Founded in August 2013, Lavolio Boutique Confectionery is well-versed in the art of making sweets. Inspired by the traditional confectionery art still thriving in Lavinia’s native Italy, the laborious manufacturing process involved sounds like something out of the invention room in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. shells are made the old-fashioned way in revolving copper pans over a period of several days. The end result is five different confectionery collections, all vegetarian and gluten-free and bursting with carefully sourced fruits, nuts and spices presented in beautifully patterned tins.
‘I’m the second of six children from a big Italian family,’ Lavinia tells me. ‘My mother used to despair at our messiness, which she put down to a creative gene,’ she laughs. This creative streak reared its head after nine years working as an investment banker. ‘I became disillusioned with the finance world and I wanted to find a new career,’ she admits. ‘I’d always been passionate about cooking, so I joined a cookery school to learn the ropes. I quickly decided that I didn’t want to be a chef – the unsociable hours and stressful working environment weren’t a million miles from the financial sector I’d just left, so I started to consider my career options in different areas of the food and hospitality industry.’
It was actually a batch of marshmallows that eventually provided the Eureka moment for Lavinia. ‘I was researching food trends in 2013 – we’d had the cupcake craze, and marshmallows looked like the next big thing. I started to hand-make them at home following a simple recipe of gelatine, sugar and water. After a while an overpowering bovine aroma, shall we say, started to pervade my home. I’m a meat-eater but even I was put off by the smell and I decided that I wanted to make vegetarian sweets and that would be my niche.’
Around the same time, Lavinia started to collaborate with renowned Italian pâtissier Mathieu Berti who introduced her to new flavour combinations and old methods of making confectionery. This sense of experimentation and innovation manifests itself in the five different Lavolio collections. When opened, the tins of sweets teem with delicacies of all shapes and sizes, from marble-like shiny orbs to brightly (but naturally) coloured beans. An assortment of flavours and textures, the Nutty Forest Collection I sample contains toasted hazelnuts enrobed in dark chocolate and a crisp sugar-spun shell, pistachios coated in vanilla and smooth pebbles of marzipan. ‘My favourite collection is the Decadent Spiced,’ Lavinia reveals.

‘Its subtle balance of cinnamon, saffron, chilli and coffee means it’s pure grown-up indulgence.
‘It’s an amazing feeling founding your own company,’ she admits. ‘It’s been a lot of hard work, but the fact that we are now stocked everywhere from Fortnum & Mason and Partridges to Bayley & Sage is fantastic,’ she enthuses. ‘That’s not to mention all the amazing collaborations we’ve had the privilege of working on, from art-gallery openings to producing bespoke boxes of treats for fashion brands like Moschino.’
Her passion for the products is palpable. ‘The sweets are a labour of love,’ she confesses, adding that when she does get time off from overseeing things at the office on Peterborough Road or visiting the factories in Italy, she enjoys the peace and quiet of her apartment off Lots Road where she unwinds making traditional pasta recipes handed down from her
Nonna in Bologna. ‘I always make fresh tortellini,’ she says, as if it’s the easiest thing in the world.
After the gluttony of the festive season, repentance usually starts to sink in around about now, as the gym kit is reluctantly dug out from the back of the wardrobe where it has been gathering dust for a month. ‘My boyfriend’s grandmother lived to 99-and-a-half and she ate sugar every day – that’s all the justification I need,’ comes her response when I ask Lavinia whether she will be abstaining from her usual tasting duties this month (‘It’s for work!’ she protests).
‘Sugar is sugar. It’s never going to be healthy, but for me Lavolio has always been about using real flavours and the best-quality ingredients to craft something that isn’t laced with unnecessary additives. I wanted to create grown-up treats, something that people can pass around after dinner or enjoy with a glass of wine,’ she concludes with a smile. ‘After all, if you’re going to fall off the wagon, it might as well be worth it!’ n

Rustic loaves of bread dusted with flour lie in baskets beside rows of large billowy croissants, glazed cinnamon swirls and sumptuous oversized muffins (blueberry,
spiced apple, chocolate chip, to name but a few). It’s a tempting display, but what strikes me is the open-plan setting, with all the baking happening within sight behind the large racks of freshly baked goods. I later learn that this was done on purpose to encourage curiosity – it certainly engaged mine.
I’m sitting in the back room with owner Dee Monteleone, surrounded by boxes of fresh cakes and half-finished creations, as she tells me what sparked her love of baking. ‘It began when I was a young girl in Sydney, Australia. I was always in the kitchen watching my mum cook, licking the bowl like most children do,’ she smiles. ‘My mother baked for more than just pleasure, though; I was a chronic asthmatic, and 30 years ago dairy and gluten-free options weren’t available to buy in the shops, so she created her own.’
Those early memories inspired Dee to join the world of professional baking. After finishing college, she flew to London to study at the National Bakery School at South Bank University, an important step
towards her ambition of opening a bakery. Her dream was to set up shop in Australia, so I enquire as to what made her swap the sunshine for rain when she decided to stay in the UK. ‘My husband,’ she replies. ‘He lived in Balham and when I was living in Holland Park, I used to think that was such a long way away!’ she laughs, ‘but now I love being south of the river; there’s such a villagey feel here.’
Reflecting on her earlier comment about her mother, I ask about the variety of gluten-free produce available at the bakery. ‘I like to call gluten-free, guilt-free,’ she laughs, before telling me that the range is actually one of her best-selling ideas. ‘There can be a lot of stigma around gluten-free products because people worry that they won’t

taste as good but, in fact, the opposite is true. As well as my orange and almond cake and fruit muffins, we also do quiches and scotch eggs.’
Dee goes on to tell me about her other passion, teaching, which she indulges with regular baking classes held at Dee Light Bakery as well as classes at the Divertimenti Cookery School in South Kensington, where she teaches cake decorating and gluten-free baking. They’re open to anyone who wants to learn to bake bread rolls or make and decorate cookies. They’re fun days for everyone’
But enough of the chatter – despite being surrounded by teatime treats, Dee’s busy schedule rarely allows for indulging. She stresses: ‘I’ve got about 10 bespoke cakes to finish and the wholesale orders go out tomorrow; it’s never-ending, but what could be better than cake?’ I can’t disagree with that... n

I have a confession to make: I’m a foodie and a theatregoer. Not only do I love going to big West End productions (I think I’ve seen just about every current musical going) and eating
at Michelin-starred restaurants (I have a taste for the finer things in life), but I also love exploring local, independent haunts – there’s something quite unknown and mysterious about a pop-up restaurant or an intimate night out at the local theatre.
That’s why when I heard about food theatre restaurant The Green Room, which opened in September 2014, my mind automatically turned to Heston Blumenthal; not only does he inject drama into his eateries with the likes of exploding ovens, but he also conjures up dishes including liquid nitrogen scrambled ice cream. The Green Room, however, is a different type of experience. Spread over two
floors, the restaurant is situated on the upper level, while the ground floor comprises the bar area and theatre installation project, which changes every two months. The brainchild of Sasha Pomelova, who is a former Cirque du Soleil technician, the interior features thick wooden tables, mood lighting and pieces of old theatrical rigging equipment.
In order to sample a range of the dishes available, I opted for the eight-course tasting menu, which included Gressingham duck breast served with orange jus, seafood risotto and grilled
fillet of beef accompanied with a red wine, mushroom and green peppercorn sauce. All washed down with a bottle of the house red, of course. The food was absolutely delicious – the beef was tender, the portions were the right size for the tasting menu and the tangy lemon sorbet in-between the courses refreshed the palate. My only slight criticism was the dining experience, as although the restaurant claims to use specialist effects and interaction from the waiters, I didn’t witness it. Then again, when I visited, it was the opening night.
After dessert, I headed to the bar which rather reminded me of a speakeasy – dimly lit, intimate, with extraordinary cocktails. There was a lively atmosphere and everyone was singing along to a pianist. That was until the performance was interrupted by the installation. During featuring The Haunted Dress which was originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, a mannequin was brought to life through video projections and a narrative. The installation intrigued me – it was certainly something a little bit different. More cocktails followed, along with more singing, and soon enough I found myself wishing that I had more time before I had to catch the last Tube home. If you’re after fantastic food, a lively atmosphere and a good night out, head to The Green Room – you won’t be disappointed. n

Battersea is now home to a never-before-seen, state-of-the-art building that houses a Land Rover showroom. Situated on
Lombard Road, the new building is said to be the first of its kind in the country.
The modern theme begins from the outside. Its gun-metal grey exterior is typical of most Land Rover outlets, and it looks as though it has been clad with enormous grey tiles. The building’s style is square, with clean lines and proportions that are perfectly symmetrical, and the
large windows are perfect for people to peer through at the cars inside.
However, the interior and its inner workings are a little more interesting. The space inside is 40 per cent larger than the previous showroom, meaning it can host double the number of staff and a permanent display of 24 Land Rover models. Since the building has such a large number of vehicles in it, it’s no surprise that the staff have been equipped with impressive technology to assist customers as they browse the contents.
The showroom operates a technological ‘cloud’ system, whereby the staff can access a whole host of information to relay to customers – perfect for those who can’t decide what they’re after.
The new building also has an ample lounge space with a PlayStation console, games and free Wi-Fi. The environment aims to impress customers as they search for their ideal car and make the experience as simple as possible. n

The newly built schoolyard development in wandsworth has released some of its properties to the market for general sale.
Brand-new one, two and three-bedroom apartments make up the residential build, and there has already been significant interest in the development’s previous phases of release.
outside space is important to the developers of this build, which means that the exterior leisure areas are accessible to all of the residents and built to a high quality that combines stylish architecture with a common-sense approach tailored for the people who will be using them. these gardens and open areas are shared spaces, which the developer believes will create a strong sense of community; something that existing roads and residential spots in wandsworth have always striven to achieve.
each apartment boasts stylish interior design, and in true modern fashion even the smallest one-bedroom flats have ample
living spaces that wouldn’t be too difficult to entertain in. the properties each have balconies, most of which have entrances from the reception rooms and master bedroom. the smaller flats are a little larger than an average studio apartment, offering open-plan living in the reception rooms. the majority of the kitchens are in the same space as the living room, but smartly tucked further away from the balconies and windows to create a sense of separation. again, even the smaller properties have room for a dining table between the living rooms and threshold of the kitchen, so despite the open-plan nature, the flats offer a sense of interior maturity and flowing space. the bedrooms are of a good size, although some of the smallest bedrooms in the three-bedroom flats are quite snug. still, this is to be expected in a new build like this and the vast communal areas in the larger flats more than make up for it.
the high quality of the materials used to build the flats is also impressive, especially in the under-floor heating and bathroom appliances. the kitchens are fitted with equipment that is very good quality and designed to be as stylish as it is practical. each of the apartments has white walls, which not only look stylish but also offer a blank canvas for those who wish to make a mark on their new property.
wandsworth is famous for having the lowest council tax in the country, so people who move into these flats have cause for financial celebration. Prices start at around £400,000 for a one-bedroom property, so it might be a good thing that the council tax is low. the location also plays to the building’s favour; being only a stone’s throw away from Fulham and Chelsea and with very good transport links into central london, it’s no surprise that these properties are being snapped up quickly. n

Residents’ JouRnal
December can be a mixed month; in the last couple of years we have been pretty brisk. However, this time around the new stamp duty regime certainly had the effect of galvanising buyers into action on Wednesday
3 December, with solicitors and estate agents burning the midnight oil to ensure that sales on the cusp of exchanging went through before the cut-off time.
January normally sees a spike in new instructions coming on to the market; I’ve no idea why some agents leave launching new stock until the second week of January when Boxing Day and 27 December are the two busiest days of the year on the property portals. Don’t worry, we won’t be disturbing your Christmas lunch by dragging buyers around, but it does give us a healthy stock of enquiries to work through when we re-open on 2 January.
We are anticipating a fairly brisk first quarter as buyers and sellers set out their stalls for the New Year. The election in May sits smack bang in the middle of our traditionally busy spring market, so we expect activity levels to settle back for a number of weeks before the big day. What happens afterwards is anyone’s
guess. Whilst trying not to be too political, it’s pretty clear that a Conservative majority or Con/Lib-Dem coalition will see the return to “business as usual” pretty quickly, and arguably we could have a relatively bumper second half of the year. If, however, we have a Labour majority, Lib-Dem/Lab or goodness only knows what with UKIP or the Scottish Nationalists, then it’s likely that buyers and sellers will sit on their hands until such time that any policy compromises are ironed out. Fundamentally, though, whatever happens it’s unlikely that the powerhouse/financial centre/safe haven that is London Village will change very much, so we are predicting a relatively flat 2015, albeit with a slight rise or fall in transaction levels post-election depending on who ends up at number 10. n

Robin Chatwin, Head of Savills south west London provides his top tips on extensions
Room to grow
The three most common types of extension are basement, loft and side return, all of which are typically carried out to extend the
length of time someone will stay in their current property or due to a change in circumstances, such as someone working from home. The quality of an extension or conversion will definitely contribute to the value they add. Ground-floor living space is always at a premium, so often you’ll get the best return on a side extension, which can work well as a study or a home office.
A loft conversion will normally be done to provide additional bedroom space for an expanding family, grandparents coming to stay or teenage children still at home. The ceiling height can be limited and sometimes planning permission is difficult to obtain for a full mansard extension, reducing the usefulness of the space created, which is possibly ideal for children but not for adults.

Broomwood Road, SW11 Guide price: £2.35mThis refurbished and extended five-bedroom property provides a wonderful family home with opulent living spaces. The lower-ground floor benefits from a large kitchen/family area with sliding doors that open on to an outside area with steps leading up to the garden. The ground floor comprises a double reception room, cloakroom and study area which again has sliding doors, leading you out into the ample sized garden and filling the rooms with natural light.
The first floor comprises of a spacious master bedroom with a luxuriously appointed en-suite bathroom. There is also a good-sized guest bedroom with an en-suite shower room. On the second floor there are three further bedrooms and a family bathroom. The staircase continues up to the property’s roof terrace, which provides fantastic views over the garden, enhancing the uniqueness of this property.
Savills Clapham, 020 8673 4111(savills.co.uk)
The key to a good basement is the feeling of light and space, which can be created at a cost by greater ceiling heights, deeper lightwells and direct access to the garden. Cinema rooms, TV rooms, additional bedroom space and utility rooms are the most popular uses.
In south-west London, some new trends we’ve seen are living roofs, which are sewn with wild plants and grass, as well as sliding doors across the whole of the back of the house that bring the garden and living space together. Broomwood Road provides excellent examples of modern, high-quality extensions. n

Not only is the finish and styling completely unique, they have also created a layout that makes the most of the internal space which measures just shy of 2600 sq ft. The house is a show case for renowned designer Buster and Punch to display their latest collection including light fittings, switches, door furniture and the custom built kitchen.
