The UK is a global leader in some of the most advanced
parts of modern aircraft. It supplies almost every major
aircraft platform with wings, engines, aero-structures
and advanced systems, generating over £31 billion
turnover and exporting over 90% of its production.
The South West makes a phenomenal contribution to UK
industry due to the large concentration of global aerospace
players, a dynamic and vibrant supply chain of 800
companies and world-renowned research institutions.
Valued at £7 billion and supporting up to 98,000 jobs
in the wider economy, the South West Aerospace Cluster
is recognised as the UK’s most capable and diverse
aerospace region. Home to all of the top 15 global
aerospace companies (per Deloitte), the Cluster
has an unmatched breadth and depth of aerospace
capability. From aero-structures to aero-engines,
rotorcraft to landing gear, electronic systems to
autonomy and robotics, the Cluster is a world-leader.
High value design is fast becoming the driving force
for innovation. It enables increased productivity,
agility and integration across the supply chain and
throughout the entire product life-cycle. Radical
and novel approaches to design are facilitated by
advances in materials and manufacturing technologies,
also major strengths of the South West.
Companies in the region ensure that the South West
and the UK remain at the forefront of global aerospace
through major international research and development
programmes. These programmes improve aircraft
manufacturing and performance, increase competitiveness,
reduce costs, noise and emissions.
The industry capitalised on a variety of research
centres, from additive manufacturing to composite
materials and advanced simulation.
Aligned with the aims and ambitions
of the UK’s Aerospace Growth
Partnership, iAero is supported by
OEMs including Airbus, GE Aviation,
GKN Aerospace, Leonardo Helicopters,
Rolls-Royce, SMEs and the public
sector. The programme is creating
an environment to support business
incubation, innovation development
and collaborative working. Key
companies are collaborating to deliver
a regional platform for innovation
and growth through aerospace
technology, skills, supply chain and
manufacturing development.
The National Aerospace Technology
Exploitation Programme is designed
to cultivate a supply chain that is
rich in new technology and highly
innovative. South West projects
include composite materials, design,
modelling and software, coatings,
additive layer manufacturing,
UAV avionics and fibre optics.
