VOICES

A Learning Community of Diverse LeadersSouth Seattle Community College

VOICES is a professional development group created under the auspices of the AANAPISI grant. The group formed in July 2010 and has continued to meet throughout the 2010–2011 academic year. We’d like to take this opportunity to share our mission and plans for 2011-2012, for although the AANAPISI grant will end, VOICES will live on under the guidance of Ricardo Leyva-Puebla and the Office of Diversity and Retention.

VOICES is a collaborative community at South Seattle Community College furthering the commitment to providing lifelong learning opportunities with respect to ensuring inclusion, equity and social justice. VOICES promotes a vision of cultural sensitivity, fostering a climate of awareness of and appreciation for diversity.

With this mission in mind, VOICES moves forward in two focus areas: Learning Community and Political Action. The Learning Community will work on activities such as Lunch and Learn, the dissemination of the where I am from… activities, a new campus mentoring program called Allies for New Hires, and other efforts that encourage personal social justice awareness through learning and sharing. At the same time, the Political Action activities will center on the possible implementation of the Diversity Framework, and other efforts to move our campus structure towards greater social justice.

Watch for new opportunities to get involved in social justice awareness at South!

Gear Up! May is Bike to Work Month. To participate on a Bike to Work team this year, all you need to do is commit to commuting by bike five times during the month of May. This can be a full bike commute, or a combo of bus, ferry, or carpool with some bicycling. If you can’t commit to that, you can still participate in May 20 National Bike to Work Day! South’s bike teams have made their commitments and are all set for the challenge. It’s the Vicious Cycles vs. Team Fibonacci (the latter is not an Italian dish, but a math “thing” that involves an unending sequence and some other stuff!).
