In 2012-2013, our students topped the county in scholarship offers with over $21,577,000. Ms. Jodie Hogan, a South River Spanish teacher, was selected as Anne Arundel County Teacher of the Year and our athletes captured four state titles. The list of school and student awards was extensive. Being recognized as a great school creates a sense of pride in our students, parents and community. I look forward to the challenge of a new year. As a sworn optimist, I am confident we will continue our successes. During the final quarter of last year, we initiated the NEST hour. NEST is an acronym for nutrition, extracurricular, socialization and tutoring. The hour is divided into two blocks— the Blue Block and Silver Block. One half of our faculty is on duty each block. Students may choose a variety of activities offered or may attend tutorials. Time for make-up work and test- ing is also available. Students may have their lunch during either block in the cafeteria or spend time in the theater café in the auditorium lobby. Teachers and students found the NEST hour very valuable and are excited about the growing possibilities it will offer. I am very proud of the strength of character our students have exhibited. I have also been around long enough to know that it will require constant reinforcement and reminders from everyone of school-wide expectations to sustain this success. Our theme this year is: WE ARE—SOUTH RIVER. This simple statement installs pride in who we are and what we stand for. Sincerely, William T. Myers Principal

Senior MeetingsSenior MeetingsSenior Meetings

The Counseling Office at South River High School wants to be sure all students in the class of 2014 and their parents understand what is required by the Maryland State Department of Education and the Anne

Arundel County Board of Education in order for a student to earn a high school diploma.

To that end, Counselors will be meeting with Senior students to discuss the Graduation Notification Agreement. This document outlines both the number of credits a student has earned by the end of junior

year and the credit requirements that still must be met in order to graduate in June. It also lists a High School Completer Path, earned Service Learning hours, and High School Assessment information.

Students will be bringing their materials home for parent review.

Please be sure to sign the agreement and return the form to the Counseling Office promptly.

Preliminary SAT®

National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT)

The Preliminary SAT®/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test that

provides firsthand practice for the SAT Reasoning Test™ and is co-sponsored by the College Board and National

Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

The PSAT/NMSQT is designed to measure critical reading, math problem solving, and writing skills which are

important to student success in college. In addition, information derived from PSAT scores also provides students

with

feedback on where their strengths and weaknesses may be in skills needed for college level work which helps

students to focus preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice;

information on how their performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to

college;

data needed to participate in the competition for scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation

(additional information is provided below);

an opportunity to prepare for the SAT. The PSAT uses the kinds of questions and the exact directions found on

the SAT Reasoning Test™;

and a way to receive information directly from colleges (when the "yes" box is checked for the Student Search

Service).

Students will be receiving the 2013 PSAT/NMSQT® Official Student Guide in the weeks prior to the exam date. (adapted from http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html)

National Merit Scholarship Program

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began

in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit

Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) –a test which serves as an initial screening of approximately 1.4

million entrants each year – and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.

To participate in the National Merit® Scholarship Program, a student must take the PSAT/NMSQT® in the third year

of high school, regardless of grade classification or educational pattern, be enrolled full time as a high school

student, progressing normally toward graduation or completion of high school, and planning to enroll full time in

college no later than the fall following completion of high school, and be a citizen of the United States or be a U.S.

lawful permanent resident (or have applied for permanent residence, the application for which has not been denied)

and intend to become a U.S. citizen at the earliest opportunity allowed by law.

The student's responses to items on the PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet that are specific to NMSC program entry

determine whether the individual meets requirements to participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The SAT and ACT ExamsThe SAT and ACT ExamsThe SAT and ACT Exams

The SAT is the nation's most widely used college admissions test, a distinction that it has held for more than seven decades. It is taken by more than two million students every year and is accepted by virtually all

colleges and universities. SAT tests measure knowledge of subjects learned in the classroom, including reading, writing, and math, and how that knowledge can be applied inside and outside of school. It helps colleges get to know a student better by giving them insight into how the student thinks, solves problems, and

communicates. Applications for the SAT are available on-line at www.collegeboard.com.

The ACT is a curriculum based test that assesses a high school student’s general and educational development and their ability to complete college level work. The multiple choice tests cover 4 skill areas - English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. The writing test, which is optional, measures a student’s ability to plan and write a short essay. Local ACT test centers include Anne Arundel Community College and

Southern High School. Apply for the ACT on-line at www.actstudent.org.

Use the South River High School Code 210494 when applying for either exam

To send SAT and ACT scores to colleges, the scores must be requested directly from the host - SAT from

www.collegeboard.com; ACT from www.actstudent.org. If requesting scores after tests have been administered,

payment of a fee is required (you may request free score reports to be sent to the schools of your choice at time of test registration).

The ASVAB Career Exploration Program provides high-quality career exploration and planning

materials at no cost to high schools throughout the country. The program encourages students to explore a wide variety of careers, rather than limiting their exploration by telling them what they

can or should do.

The test covers eight areas, including science, word knowledge, mathematics, and mechanical comprehension. It assesses a student’s ability to learn new skills and a predictor of success in

training and education programs. Results are used to create a 90 item Interest Inventory based on John Holland’s widely accepted theory of career choice. When students complete the FYI, they

will have three interest codes to use with the OCCU-Finder for career exploration.

The OCCU-Find Career Exploration Tool contains information about 400+ occupations, sorted alphabetically, by interest code and by career cluster, providing students with a variety of ways to identify occupations that will be satisfying. The on-line version links directly to O-NET and OOH

job descriptions and military career equivalents. The OCCU-Find program also features career videos that highlight “A Day In The Life…” glimpses of a number of career opportunities.

CAMERAS

South River High School is equipped with a video camera system.  It covers selected interior and

exterior public portions of the building and grounds.  It is NOT monitored constantly, but it is monitored

during emergency situations.  During certain events, when the safety or security of students may be in

question, authorized personnel from local, state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be given

access to view images projected on the camera system.  If you have any questions about the system,

you should  call the Supervisor of School Security at 410‐222‐5083.

EMERGENCY DRILLS

During each school year, various drills are conducted at every school to ensure that staff and

students are prepared in the event of an emergency.  These drills include monthly fire/evacuation drills.

In addition, five drills with scenarios developed by the school system’s Office of School Security

and based upon various possible emergency scenarios are done each year.  These include, but are not

limited to:  evacuation for natural gas emergencies; shelter for tornado and earthquake; shelter for

outside hazardous materials release; lockout for danger outside of the school building, reverse

evacuation back into the school for students and staff outside; and lockdown for a person with a

weapon inside of the school

These drills are discussed with staff prior to the drill and evaluated once the drill is complete.  In

some cases, the drills may be discussed with students before they take place.

SAT Prep Courses Benefitting South River High School

The Answer SAT prep program offers students the opportunity to learn everything they need to know about the SAT in a convenient and affordable format. We cover all aspects of the test, share tips, and discuss strategies. We also share confidence-building techniques, including discussion of time management, guessing, and skipping problems.

Everyone knows how stressful yet important this test is. But not preparing is just not an option. You wouldn’t think of not preparing for a driver’s test. You wouldn’t think of not preparing for a final exam. You wouldn’t think of even not preparing for a vocabulary test. Why would you not prepare for what is arguably the one of the most important tests you’ll ever take? It doesn’t make sense and now that there is an option that is affordable, fits into your student’s busy schedule and supports your school, why wouldn’t you prepare?

Our compact and comprehensive courses:

• Teach students everything they need to know about the SAT • Covers all major strategies • Includes a full-length SAT and analysis of the test • Reviews all sections of the test including the essay • Increases students confidence in their ability to raise their score • Includes take-home packet for further review • Offers busy students an alternative to school-based prep courses or long, drawn-out, expensive courses • Provides families an affordable test prep option • Gives students who can’t fit other SAT courses into their schedule an option • Allows families to support their school while helping themselves • Provides families with a structured yet affordable way to learn how to take the SAT • Makes affordable what is often a very large expense

Choose from the following Saturday 2013-2014 class schedules that best suits your student’s needs. Each one-day course runs from 9:00 am – 5:30 pm. Register on-line at www.theanswerclass.com.

Benefitting South River High School

On April 17, 2013, the Board of Education approved two policies and Superintendent Kevin Maxwell implemented two Administrative Regulations regarding the use of social media for instructional purposes in Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Policy GAOO and Regulation GAOO-RA govern employee use of social media, and Policy JCCC and Regulation JCCC-RA address student use of social media. These policies and regulations can be found on the Board of Education page of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools website, www.aacps.org/aacps/boe/board/newpolicy/Policies.asp.

Under the policies and regulations, parental acknowledgment and consent are required before any AACPS student can view or access social media sites for instructional purposes on school system devices. Students who do not have parental approval

will be given alternate instructional activities during times when social media is being accessed by students on school system devices for instruction.

A list of approved sites will be reviewed at least annually and published on AACPS’ website. Permission to grant access to social media through this format does not extend to student use of personal electronic devices.

Schools also will be able to use approved sites to communicate with parents and students under certain conditions also spelled out in the policies and regulations.

Informational flyersA new policy adopted by the

Board of Education on June 19, 2013, limits the number of agencies and organizations from which material can be sent home with students. The

policy allows only flyers and other material from Anne Arundel County Public Schools; federal, state, and local governments; PTAs, PTOs, etc., operating within AACPS; clubs directly affiliated with AACPS; and the 21st Century Education Foundation.

Material from other Anne Arundel County groups, such as for-profit businesses, recreation sports teams, dance schools, etc., may now be displayed on a table, rack, or other suitable area designated by the school but not sent home with students. Parents should note the materials placed in these areas are neither sponsored nor endorsed by AACPS. However, parents should be aware that court decisions interpret broadly the content acceptable to be displayed in these areas. That material, in some instances, may include religious material.

August 2013

On July 23, 2013, the Board of Education of Anne Arundel County appointed Mamie J. Perkins, a 40-year educator who served as acting superintendent of Howard County Public Schools in 2011-2012, to serve as interim superintendent of Maryland’s fifth largest school system for the coming school year. Perkins was appointed by an 8-0 vote, with Board Member Stacy Korbelak absent.

The 62-year-old Perkins, who spent more than 26 years in Howard County and 13 years in Baltimore City schools before retiring in August, succeeded outgoing Superintendent Kevin Maxwell on Aug. 1. Dr. Maxwell, who had led Anne Arundel County Public Schools since 2006, became Chief Executive Officer of Prince George’s County Public Schools the same day.

“Mamie Perkins is a passionate advocate for children who has diverse experiences over a long career that will serve our school system very well

in the coming year,” Board President Teresa Milio Birge said. “Our Board is confident that she will work with the dedicated team we have in place to continue the upward trajectory our school system has been on over the last seven years.”

Perkins will be paid $197,087 for the 11 months of her contract, which will end on June 30, 2014.

Perkins began her educational career as a classroom teacher in Baltimore City in 1973. She worked there until 1986, also serving as a resource teacher for foreign-born students, a summer school principal, a supervisory teacher for student teachers, and a reading resource teacher for adult learners.

She moved to Howard County in 1986, where she worked as a teacher for gifted and talented programs, coordinator of elementary and health education, and supervisor of health education. She oversaw the system’s Human Resources department from

1999 to 2005, and was chief of staff from 2005 to 2011, when she became deputy superintendent. She was acting superintendent of the school system from June 2011 to July 2012, and retired in August 2012.

“I have watched with great admiration the work that this Board of Education and Dr. Maxwell have done in recent years, and I am ecstatic to be a part of helping to continue the great things that are in place here over the next year,” Perkins said. “I am especially excited about the opportunity to get back to working with teachers and staff, and to get into schools to see the good things that are happening for children every day.”

Perkins has also been an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Education since 2004. In April, she was appointed by Governor Martin O’Malley to a six-year term on Howard Community College’s Board of Trustees.

Board adopts new social media policy, revises flyers procedures

Agosto 2013
