Inspiring Excellence through PRIDE Principal: Mr Peter Hickey Vere Street South Grafton NSW 2460 T: 02 6642 3388 F:02 6643 2065 [email protected] This week all NSW Public Schools are celebrating SASS Recognition week. SASS Recognition Week, which started last Monday, is an initiative of the Public Service Association – supported by the NSW DEC – to promote the work and role of SAS staff. The statement below was displayed on the NSW DEC Portal earlier this week. We were also very fortunate to have 3 of our recent Brand photos displayed as well. These staff are often the first point of contact for parents and play a vital role in customer service. With an incredible year so far – bushfires, floods, COVID-19 – our staff have had to be increasingly flexible to adapt to changing scenarios and pandemic restrictions. Every day in our public schools there are 35,000 School Administrative and Support Staff who help keep our schools running efficiently and provide comprehensive support to principals, teachers and parents. Our SAS staff play many roles supporting the efficient management of schools, including administration, health and safety, asset management, project management and finance. They include school administrative managers and officers, school learning support officers, Aboriginal education officers, business managers, assisted travel officers, technical support officers, general assistants and farm assistants. On behalf of the Department of Education, thank you for your service and commitment.’ I would like to thank our wonderful SAS staff for their excellent contributions they all make daily to the running of our school and the very positive difference they also make supporting our teaching staff, community and students to help us all reach our goals. On Tuesday we posted our Kindergarten Orientation Video on our Facebook page. This is the first of a series of posts to assist our community and preschoolers. As mentioned last week we will be posting a series of PPP activities with the first one starting on Tuesday 1st September at 9.30am. Our PPP participation home packs for our preschoolers will be available shortly from our Infants office. If you have already returned your child’s enrolment form please contact the Infants office to arrange collection or return your enrolment form asap so you may collect this pack for your child. This pack will include pencils, scissors, glue stick, white board marker and a personalised laminated name sheet and all required resources to participate in the online PPP activities. On Tuesday our boys and girls hockey teams played Grafton PS and Westlawn PS at the Grafton Hockey Fields. Our teams played with great sportsmanship and really enjoyed representing our school. Our thanks to Mr Kelly and Miss Emily Ryan for coaching our teams and Mrs Sullivan and Mrs Warren for their support. The girls team progressed to the finals after two wins and then won the final 8-nil. It was great to have a boys team compete again, unfortunately they were defeated in both games but showed a lot of team spirit. The next sporting organisation games are football (soccer) which will be held on Tuesday 8th September at Rushforth Park. Our Book Fair is up and running and our thanks to Mrs Heyman and Mrs Vickers for their organisation of this wonderful initiative in our library. The Book Fair will continue until Thursday 3rd September. Thank you for your support! Information is available at https://sites.google.com/a/education.nsw.gov.au/librarywithmrsheyman/book-fair-2020 .

Our Book Character Parade is being held next Tuesday 1st September. We will be holding two parades one on each campus. All parents are unfortunately unable to attend but we will be publishing this activity on our Facebook Page. A note was sent our earlier this week explaining the details for this initiative. So get your thinking caps on to work out which character you will come dressed up as this year. A reminder this is a normal day, so please ensure your child brings their normal recess and lunch and drink bottles. Remember students will need to stay in their costumes all day and no students are permitted to leave earlier as in previous years.

Good luck to our school Debating team who are debating against Maclean Public School next Wednesday 2nd September in the 2nd round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. Mr Davey from the NSW DEC Arts unit will again be adjudicating this debate.

Unfortunately we have been notified by the council that we can NOT hold our Primary Athletics carnival at Junction Hill as numbers are restricted to 100 when utilising council facilities. We will endeavour to rebook this carnival in Term 4 if guidelines have changed. If they have not we will hold a modified Athletics carnival in our school grounds.

Please remember to practise social distancing whenpicking up and dropping off your children, particularly on our Infants campus. We would appreciate parents drop and go during these times. No parents should be in the corridors. Parents should only be visiting the school through the office for essential reasons. Please ensure your child has a drink bottle as our bubblers are closed for individual drinking.Have a great week - Mr Peter Hickey - Principal

Tell Them From Me Parent SurveyThank you to the members of our community who have completed the parent Tell Them From Me survey. The parent survey will close tomorrow, Friday 28th August. Marvellous Maths with Mrs McGrathThe Birthday Cake problem. Recently a staff member had a birthday and when the students found out how old she was a student commented “But how could ALL those candles fit on just one cake?” What a great mathematical problem! Should there be groups of? an array? will there be left overs? Is the cake round, rectangular or square? Will this change the organisation of the candles?

Next time someone in your household has a birthday ask your child to think about this problem! By the way once teachers are over 30 we are all ‘REALLY OLD’!

Mrs McGrathInstructional Leader

2SB 2SB have been working mathematically with addition and subtraction activities. The class is enjoying writing and solving number sentences to expand their number knowledge.
